Rep. of Ireland's, most successful team of all time were relegated at the weekend (EircomLeague, summer soccer in Ireland)..........Brought back memories of 1974, when a certain most successful in England team were relegated :( !

Amazingly, Dundalk who are the 2nd most successful off all-time in the Eircom Lge., are presently plying their trade in the lower div. as well !

Changing times!

Who & where ?

(Probably only of interest to Irish people at home & abroad) !

Shamrock Rovers are from Dublin and have more Irish honours than one could care to name. Dundalk are from, well, Dundalk, and head the best of the rest as regards honours won down the years !

The league of Ireland is sponsored by Eircom. It is the main soccer league within the Republic of Ireland(. Standard for premier lge. is probably English Div.3, the better teams may just make English Div 2.........The lower div. probably conference std., with some of the lesser lites, struggling to make that level.

In saying that, the std. seems to be improving in the last few years, with some clubs now being able to afford to go professional, albeit at a lower level.

Average attendances, are probably about 3,000 per game. Cork City, the highest this year, probably getting 6,000-8,000 gates.

Shelbourne,( another Dublin club) who have been the most successful in the last 10yrs. or so, nearly qualified for the Champions lge. last yr.
Cork City have just been crowned as new Lge. champions, & recently nearly made into the UEFA cup group matches.

In Northern Ireland(6 counties), they have their own league, similar std.

Hope this info is of some help. A link if interested...www.fai.ie

There was a time when the holy trinity of Dunphy, Giles and Ray Treacy took over at Sharock Rovers and Dunphy declared they'd win the European Cup. The useless feckers couldnt even win the Irish league.

One of my best mates is a Director at Shamrock Rovers, wasn't too happy about last Friday week but he's hopeful that they can get the club back on track financially

my first United match was when they played Shamrock Rovers in 84...Olsen and Strachan had just signed...and Sir Bobby was there...we won 2-0 i think it was a beautiful compact ground if I recall
