Sergi Roberto

Catalan, cantera and culé through & through - only way he moves on is if he's deemed surplus to needs.

He's a very liked player at the club with a fantastic work ethic. Hard to say what his upside is as he's been often described as a bit too mechanical and more a system player than a standout talent. Had Thiago stayed, doubtful Roberto would've still stayed on although he offered to play with the B team. He surprises me from time to time and I hope he'll get minutes in the Copa Del Rey this season to see what his potential might be.

Sounds like he's alright, but if Thiago/Cesc struggles for minutes, what chances does the lad have? Though as you said, he's Catalan through and through (even offered to play for the B Team).

Featured quite a bit in this preseason with them.
If Moyes was hesitant about how Thiago would handle the PL then I can't see him going for Sergi Roberto.

Do you think both him and Jonathan Dos Santos have a future with your club, or will one (or both) leave the club?

Sounds fair enough. His Wiki even has him having made 2 appearances for 'Catalonia'. Didn't even know they had a team!

That said, I'm not sure how much his love for the club will influence things. Surely he may always be a Barca fan, but not at the expense of not carving out a good career for himself surely? He is unlikely to make it into their first team from what you have said.

I would also suggest that he isn't 'special' enough for us to bother with, from your assessment. I'd rather continue developing the likes of Andreas Perreira from our own academy.

Yep and until recently Cruyff was the coach. All of the core Catalan players at the club have played for Catalunya - even La Roja players

Some cantera players are more prone than others to be tempted away but Roberto is a lifer unless kicked to the curb

I don't think he's special but I didn't think Busquets or Pedro were particularly special until Pep got a hold of them

JDS does not which makes his continued presence in the squad mystifying, to me. Tito & Pep et al couldn't get the Mexican to accept any sort of loan and even was called out in the media for thinking this was a social club rather than a footballing one

Roberto more likely to have a future with Barcelona, no doubt

Didn't Chelsea nick one off Barca's academy couple of years ago? Romeu or something i think, turns out he isn't that quite special

Yeah, Chelsea has a great track record for developing young midfielders  . Oriol started out fine and between the managerial & playing changes, he got marginalized until he tore his ACL. Fortunately, he's only 22 and back in Spain where he'll get his chances to show his quality

I guess that depends on whether or not Moyes really doubted Thiago. I don't believe he did, but perhaps used it as an excuse for getting trumped by Bayern for his signature. Afterall, he went for Herrera, who isn't vastly different from Thiago.

Apart from physically, which was what Moyes was said to doubt.

FCBarca makes it sounds like it would be a gta mission trying to sign this kid.

Regardless of being hindered by moving to Chelsea, I don't expect much. He's never looked particularly special.

Good thing we have our Redcafe crew set up if needed!

To be honest, I hope this kid stays at Barca IF he has a chance of making it there. If he doesn't, the question is why should United be in for him? I know our midfield isn't very good, but we need quality now - not young potential.

Is there a big difference physically between Thiago and Herrera? Thiago is a couple of inches shorter, but he looks a stocky lad. Herrera looks a bit taller, bit a bit leaner too, in my opinion. Sergi looks along the same lines as Thiago, short and stocky.

5 ft 7 vs 6 ft

That's what I mean though, there's more to physicality than height, and Thiago is a touch shorter, but he looks to have more about him. Then again, I think if a player is good enough, his build doesn't matter. Afterall, the current best player on earth is probably one of the smallest and lightweight players around.

And also, Paul Scholes was 5ft6.
