Compensation agreed for McGinty move

Charlton will receive compensation from Manchester United after the Premier League champions signed 15-year-old defender Sean McGinty on Friday. The promising centre-half, who has been with the club for three years, was offered scholarship terms with the Addicks this summer. But with the Red Devils having tracked him for some time, he has opted to switch to Old Trafford. Although the Republic of Ireland U17 international is not contracted to the Addicks, the two clubs have agreed an undisclosed compensation package, which includes additional fees depending on the player's progress at United.

Charlton football club chairman Richard Murray said: "To have a club like Manchester United tracking our youth players clearly shows the quality that our academy is currently producing. It also provides further evidence of the value of retaining our academy status, a decision the board made earlier this summer despite the club's relegation to League One. Of course, nothing would have made us happier than Sean coming through the ranks and representing our first team, and our coaches had high hopes for him. We did our utmost to persuade him to stay, and offered scholarship terms similar to those which we gave Jonjo Shelvey at the same stage in his career. Of course, Jonjo's progress over the last year or so, not to mention his impact on the first team, just shows what is possible at Charlton, and clearly illustrates our commitment to youth development. But equally, joining such a big Premier League club is obviously an attractive prospect, and Sean and his family made it clear that they wanted to move north to United.”

Murray added: "Manchester United have behaved entirely honourably throughout the process, and I'd like to thank them for that.” Maidstone-based McGinty joined the Addicks at the age of 12 and, despite his age, represented both Charlton's U18 side and reserves last season. After several appearances for the U18s, McGinty made his first start for the second XI in a 1-0 defeat to Millwall at Stonebridge Road in April. He then went on to feature in a 5-0 win over Southampton in a behind-closed-doors fixture at Sparrows Lane and also started a 2-0 triumph at Reading.

Looks a big lad for his age. We do like our Irish defenders. Hopefully he's more the new Jonny Evans than the new Paul McShane.

The homepage described him as "rugged" - so I assume he has a certain physical presence about him

I haven't seen him playing, but from what I have read on here, people haven't been too impressed.

Shrimps sign Manchester United youngster on loan

MORECAMBE have today signed Manchester United defender Sean McGinty on loan.

McGinty, 18, is a talented defender who arrived at Old Trafford in summer 2009 from Charlton Athletic. He has joined the Shrimps until March 31st but there is an option to extend the deal if required. He is described as a versatile defender who can play at centre half or left back.

He is highly rated and has already represented the Republic of Ireland at youth levels.

Born in Maidstone, Kent, McGinty spent three years at Charlton before agreeing to move north to Manchester.

Sean excelled as a regular starter during his first season with United's Under-18s, making 21 appearances for Paul McGuinness' side.

He played his part in the squad that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2011, pushing for starts in the full-back slot and impressing with his power and aggression and is now a regular in the reserves.

McGinty will take the number three shirt and is eligible for the Shrimps' clash with Dagenham on Tuesday night.

I thought he was ready for higher level than that.
A month of competitive footy at any level would be a good idea I guess..

He'll learn plenty in League 2. If it works out he could end up in League 1 or even at a club in the Championship, which would be great experience at his age and stage of development.

Playing in the lower leagues will toughen him up. Lots of high balls to head away, and matches against big strong strikers. Good move for a young defenders development I'd say.

I take it that he's chosen to play for Ireland through his parents/grandparents ancestory? I only ask this as he was born just down the road from me.

Surely a true insider like friendlytramp who has a great relationship with 'Alec' would know better than you Neviller.

You'd think that, wouldn't you? Maybe Alec is feeding him some duff information to make his exclusives all the more exciting.

I'm still not sure he thought his question through though.

Oxford United have signed Manchester United youngster Sean McGinty on a loan deal until January.

The versatile defender, who can play both at left-back and left centre-half, came through the youth ranks of Charlton Athletic before moving to Manchester in 2009. The 18 year-old, who turns nineteen next month, joins the Yellows in search of more first-team action following injuries to Harry Worley (ankle), Michael Duberry (neck), Andy Whing (groin) and Liam Davis (groin).

McGinty had enjoyed a short loan spell at fellow Division Four outlet Morecambe at the end of last season, before returning to Old Trafford for medical attention after dislocating his shoulder.

Having represented Republic of Ireland at Under-17 and Under-19 level, McGinty won’t mind being thrown in at the deep end as boss Chris Wilder is expected to give him an Oxford debut when the Us host Premier League new boy’s West Ham United tonight.

Although McGinty’s loan won’t officially start until August 4, he is expected to feature tonight alongside a number of trialists.

Hammers manager Sam Allardyce is expected to bring down a strong squad from London with the likes of Kevin Nolan, Carlton Cole, Matthew Taylor all likely to play some part. The squad may even feature former fan favourite loanee Robbie Hall.

Wilder was proud of his new arrival: “Sean is a player I have watched on more than one occasion and he is a good player who has always impressed me. He is very highly rated and will come into the group and give us another strong option. It's another example of the excellent relationship we have with Manchester United and we look forward to working with him.”

I didn't know that. Is that definite? I thought that he was still involved with the Under 19's side?

M Keane was playing with the England u19's at the Euro's. Not sure about McGinty's recent international exploits.

I do like McGinty though, reminds me of John O'Shea a little bit when playing full back.

Im certain its offical. The FAI gift wrapped them for the FA !

Cheers lads. I knew that Keane had reversed his decision alright - but not McGinty. Typical really, he was looking promising for the Under 19's. Shame.

Gone, apparently.

Troubled teen McGinty earns unwanted prize of being last United player booted out by Ferguson

Wayward teenager Sean McGinty has the notoriety of being the last Manchester United player shown the door at Old Trafford by manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Irish defender McGinty, who cost United about £1million when signed as a hugely promising 16-year-old from Charlton’s academy, had his contract ‘terminated by mutual consent’ after a showdown with the Scot. This followed McGinty, 19, being sent back from a loan period with Tranmere last month after a serious breach of club discipline, with the player not turning up for training.

Contract was 'terminated by mutual consent'

McGinty, whose loan spell at Oxford earlier this season also ended abruptly, was already in deep water at United having been convicted of drink-driving and banned for 18 months. He was caught by police last year, twice over the limit and driving the wrong way down a one-way street at 4.30am after leaving a nightclub.

The summary dismissal of McGinty — who had a year left on his United contract — shows that Fergie, who has pointed far bigger names towards the United exit over the last 27 years, was not prepared to tolerate any lowering of standards even in his last weeks in office.

Silly boy, has a chance at a good career and seems determined to throw it away
