Pure lottery on who we will sign.

Currently linked to the below 9 players:

Ederson
Andre
Gomes
Ugarte
Zubimendi
Berge
Amrabat
Rabiot
Fofana

Guess who we will sign.

If you guess the 2 correct midfielders, you win a prize (tbc).

My guesses:
Ugarte
Rabiot

I doubt it’s that scattergun, we probably have a list in priority order based on what we can get for the budget.

The bigger surprise will be if we get 2, can’t see that.

Either way, Rabiot and Amrabat. I want that prize, but I would also enjoy the meltdown.

We'll only sign one I think. We're skint and I don't think we'll manage to sell our current ones so I'm going to guess we sign Berge on the cheap and that's all.

Since there's no limit on the number of entries, I'll pick all of the above.
Too bad we won't be signing 2 midfielders, I'm not holding my breath for that prize

Does it matter? They'll be shite like every other CM we've signed since Anderson and Hargreaves

Amrabat on a cut deal and Rabbit on a free.

Both to become deadwood in approximately 18 months.

I think we're signing Ugarte and Amrabat, we just have dreams of getting both a bit cheaper than if we'd been too keen to get things done quick.

Think we only get Berge and if we lose our first premier league game then Rabiot on crazy salary package.

Amrabat.

We’ll faff around try to sell McTominay for a few more weeks, Fulham will walk away and we will be left with nonsense bids from Turkish teams. So he will stay.

Gomes?
Andre Gomes?

Well, we only sign someone mediocre or past their best for midfield. So I'm going for that Burnley midfielder.

Not getting Rabiot would be a mistake, would bench 3 of our midfielders easily. None of the others excite me / seem capable DMs, so as much as I want a change in personnel I'm not really drawn to them.

I’m going to guess no one as we have no menu available and everyone is overpriced.

We likely get Ugarte on a loan with buy option at the end of the window or Fofana if we can find a buyer for Casemiro.

I’m saying no one. With McTominay and Sancho staying, and what I assume the majority of what is left of our budget going on De Ligt and Maz, I don’t think the funds are there for a midfielder.

McTominay for £40m, 2 weeks after selling him for £20m and then realising we can’t get a replacement

Modric on a 5yr deal with a further 2yr option...250k a week.....innit.

We might as well use one of these :-

The three that I most want one of would be Ugarte, Ederson or Gomes - in that order.

But the way it's going with sales, I think it's going to end up being a cheaper option like Rabiot or Amrabat - or even a different one altogether that we end up with on loan.

If we go all in on our target and fail to get them, as in previous seasons, the club is incompetent. If we move on from our first choice(s), it’s scattergun and they’re still incompetent. They really can’t win.

I think we’ll end up with Ugarte on loan to buy near the end of the window

I'd say actually getting the player you most want, and have spent much of the window targeting, would be the win. In this case that's Ugarte, so if we end up getting him - loan or permanent - then that would be great.

If we end up missing out on him, and any other of the top ones, and end up falling back on Amrabat - or a similar late option on loan - then that definitely shouldn't be claimed a win.

Yeah obviously they win if they get their primary target. But anything other than that is seen in a dramatically negative light by a large chunk of the fanbase regardless of how they go about their business thereafter.

I think moving on from Ugarte is the right move at this moment in time. We need a harder stance in negotiations than we’ve previously had. Other clubs have grown accustomed to us rolling over to their demands.

Ideally, we should get a deal in place with another target and give PSG the option of a realistic negation before signing that player. I’m sure they’re still negotiating a number of transfers, which is how it should be

Yeah, I agree with all of that. But I'm not one for then going to the other extreme and stubbornly refusing to admit it really wouldn't be great if our only CM addition was making Amrabat permanent, or a similar signing to him on loan or something.

As you say, fine to start playing hardball on the United Tax. But then we've really got to do what other clubs do and find a good alternative at a more reasonable price elsewhere. It all depends who we get instead, and there doesn't seem to be many strong links that any good option is close or a realistic target. Largely due to the lack of any strong links that any player we hope to sell looks like leaving.

So as the start of the season, and end of the window, draw closer, I'm beginning to worry about the calibre of player we'll likely bring in. Which is especially a worry for the crucial DM role that I was really hopeful Ugarte would fill.
