I've bet a friend that I can write a better essay on popular European Cinema but I've just realised that beyond French films I know feck all on the topic, so what films worth watching are there from that part of the continent that are relatively mainstream in their respective countries?

fecking Olsenbanden.. Still can't accept that Jönssonligan wasn't an original concept.

My whole childhood is a lie.

Mostly know Swedish films, but some random Scandinavian films that came to my mind first..

Sweden
Gotta mention Bergman.. Persona , Wild Strawberries or Hour of the Wolf for instance.. avoid the religious ones would be my advise.

Songs From the Second Floor and You the Living from Roy Andersson are masterpieces IMO.

They call us Misfits - amazing 60's documentary triology.
Show Me Love
The Emigrants
My Life as a Dog
Screwed in Tallinn
Man on the Roof

Heard good things about Ruben Östlunds films like Involuntary, but haven't seen any yet.

Denmark
Festen - Always good for a laugh. :nervous:
Flickering Lights
Pusher triology
The Boss of it All
The Kingdom - TV mini series, but the best one ever made!

Norway
Pathfinder - loved this as a kid, not sure it stood the test of time.
Elling

Semi-Scandies:

Finland
Reindeer Spotting - Absolutely loved this one. Beautiful and sad documentary.

Iceland
Revenge of the Barbarians - Classic

Probably forgot many, but those are some I like. Would be cool to see some recommendations from Noggies, Danes, Finns, Icelanders..

A joint Noggie-Swedish production called Fire Nyanser Brunt, or Four Shades of Brown, if you will. Dark comedy.

I second Iron_Stove's mention of Festen

I third Festen. Screwed in Tallinn is a masterpiece in dark comedy.

Lilja 4-ever
Pelle the Conqueror

and seeing as it's Christmas, Fanny and Alexander. Cries & Whispers and Autumn Sonata are two very good latish Bergman films as well.

Reykjavik Rotterdam is currently being remade in Hollywood. Think it's out early 2012 (Contraband).
Reykjavik-Rotterdam (2008) - IMDb

Englar Alheimsins is very good.
Angels of the Universe (2000) - IMDb

Danish movies Gamle Mænd I Nye Biler and I Kina Spiser De Hunde
I Kina spiser de hunde (1999) - IMDb
Old Men in New Cars: In China They Eat Dogs II (2002) - IMDb

Tærkel I Knipe is a strange film. Also from Denmark.
Terkel in Trouble (2004) - IMDb

Free Jimmy is a Norwegian film but there was an English version made. Have only seen that one but I think it's mostly just translated with few changes made. Stoner movie I'd say.
Free Jimmy (2006) - IMDb

This one is awesome. A lot of the fun might be lost in translation unless the subtitles are really well done though.

Mio min Mio is a decent kiddie/fantasy film starring a young Christian Bale

I felt the same when I realized the Norwegian movies were based on a Danish concept with the same name :(

Also, some of my favourite Scandinavian movies are those by Lukas Moodysson, with Together (Tilsammans) from 2000 possibly being the highlight.

I'm confused, are there no countries outside France in Europe except Scandinavia?

If anyone here has the opportunity to see the Icelandic film 'Volcano' I highly recommend it.

I think it can only been seen at film festivals at the moment.
