A Galaxy far far away....
and taking into account our last 5 performances have not been fruitful, and you were SAF what system would you play?

Question to......ALL!

- - - - - - - Fab - - - - - - -
Gazza - Ronny - Larry - Micky
Bex - Seba - - Keano - Giggsy
- - - - Ole - - - Ruud - - - -

They'd still play a strong, stifling defensive game no matter who we put out so I'd rather SAF go with our best attacking options, than try to play a negating boring defensive formation. Win the right way I say.

Good question. Liverpool seem to be a little more adventurous over the past few weeks, and it depends if they decide to continue with this policy should they face United. I doubt it very much, so, 4-5-1 and try to frustrate them into pushing forward more, then hopefully giving us more scoring oportunities against them than we have been getting. Although the way they play against us aint pretty, all credit to them, it's very effective and has paid off recently.

------------Barthez-------------
---Gaz---Ronny---Larry--Micky---
Bex--Seba--Keano--Scholes--Giggs
-------------Ruud---------------

I can't believe that I'm going to say this, but here we go, I'd go for 4-5-1. The previous games have been a case of us going all out at them and them just packing the box, making us do all the work and get frustrated, and then hitting us on the break. So I'd turn the tables, play a patient game with a packed midfield, defend very deep and in numbers and basically draw them out. We've got to use the wings more, particularly Beckham to pin riise back, and get crosses in, or better, cut backs. In CM I'd actually put Butt, Keane and Scholes to get maximum domination and physical strength. Preferred CB's would be Johnsen and Blanc for their height. Ruud up front obviously, and hopefully his physical strength, movement, and good turn on the ball will help him get past their CB's.

Of course all this is redundant because they'll go out in the QF's to Deportivo.

I like it Neil, we stay in our half of the pitch and they'll obviously stay in theirs, nothing happens for 90 minutes apart from a few evil eyebrow stares being exchanged across the halfway line and we get a respectable 0:0 away draw then stuff em at OT! ;)

I won't be tempted to play Veron, as I think his game is more suited to Continental Europe. I don't think a hot den like Anfield would suit him or the Team.

I'd play Scholes, Keane, Becks and Giggs accross Midfield with Ole and RVN up front at Old Trafford.

At Anfield I would like to see Butt in Midfield somewhere to stop Murphy.

The thing is, one of our greatest assets is the counter attack, just as theirs is. So it would be nice to give them a taste of their own medicine for a change.

I'd go with that...

My problem with the 4-5-1 is that often against defensive teams, the midfiled become too crowded, and Seba and Scholesy tend to get swamped in the centre. When this happends, Ruud gets isolated, and our best goal threat is gone. Our best hope is 4-4-2, with ole alongside Ruud.

Fab
G Neville Johnson Blanc Silvestre
Becks Keano Scholes Giggs
Ruud Ole

The ideal draw would be againt Panathanikos or Porto, I don;t fancy playing Arse or Pool, but if it comes to it, either match is gonna be incredible.

Well, here is my suggestion:

------------------- Barthez ----------------------

--- GNev --- Johnsen ----- Blanc --- Silvestre ---

-------------------- Butt ------------------------

-- Beckham --- Keane ---- Veron --------- Giggs --

-------------------- RVN -------------------------

Probably a daft idea, but hey, when one of our central midfield players goes running off, Butt simply falls in behind, and thus cuts out any space in the case of a counter. He would have to be patient and disiplined though to concentrate that specific job!

I just think it keeps the midfield less cluttered, provides us with good defensive beckup in midfield and would stop any counter attacks!

Come out attacking as a double V pivoting on the Butt ball joint!

For those of you who are leaning toward playing a 4-5-1, why have none of you got Nicky as one of the 5? I can't see United getting anywhere v poo with Keano, Gingah & Seba in the middle 3.

Nicky is much more inclined to be the defensive strong man than either Seba or Ging. We'd simply be playing the one touch possesion game in the middle 1/3 while Hamman et al just wait to pounce.

I think we've tried 4-5-1 both times v poo this season, they've soaked up the pressure and won both times. 4-4-2 is the way to go against them with Giggsy and Bex stayiong wide. Two strikers is essential so Hamman has to drop off the mf coverage to help out his back 4, thus giving our mf's more space.

Disagree at will ...

Like the look of that team. Butt in the Hamman role. He could track MUUUUUURRPHY and stop the cnut from making an unchecked run into the box in the last 5 mins. Bastards

Nah, you just didn't read the thread, me, Sydius and Bazalini had already put Butt in our team lists. :p

I can't honestly see the 4-5-1 system working against Liverpool. It will basically leave Ruud too isolated up front, against a wall of defenders and, as great as he is, going up against Henchoz, Hyypia and co. will lead to failure IMO. I don't like the concept of the 4-4-2 either, but one intriguing possibility is the 4-4-1-1. I know people will think I am crazy for saying this, but I see Forlan as an incredibly effective link-man (as I think Neil pointed out in an earlier post). He is fast, has great technique, and controls the ball very well. His hold up and passing play is also very good, which will be crucial in establishing control of the ball and delaying until our midfield get there to support. I know his is inexperienced, but I can see this style, and with a support striker in front of him, Ruud will be left with more space up front--causing Liverpool to have to defend deeper. If United can work the system right, and use Forlan to hold up the ball, Ruud can be on with diagonal runs behind Liverpool's CB partnership which is their great weakness IMO and a great strength in the passing ability of Beckham and Veron, and to a lesser extent, Giggs. In a 4-5-1, such an option does not exist. Keane will have to be very disciplined in the back, and so too do the FB's, who can't get caught to far forward since Liverpool have been doing an Arsenal recently and getting the ball to their forwards on the wings and having them dribble at goal. Thus, my line-up:

-------------------Barthez------------------------

Gary------------Blanc------Ronny---------Silvestre

Beckham---------Veron-------Keane------------Giggs

--------------------Forlan------------------------

---------------------Ruud-------------------------

Well, everyone seems to have every logical combination worked out, so how about something new and exciting. The way I see it is, our defense has proved to be very weak against their counter attacking style, so why not scrap it all together and concentrate on what we are best at: ATTACK!!!!!!! :D

-----------BARTHEZ-----------

BUTT-------KEANE-----SILVESTRE

BECKS--VERON--SCHOLES--GIGGS

OLE-----NISTELROOY----FORLAN

It's crazy....but it just might work :)

I'd like to see pool soak up this kind of pressure! We could even have Barthez come up field cuz we all know he wants to get in on the action ;)

Wo wo ... Neil did you dreamt of that??
Frankly speaking our last 2 defeat to them was quite unfortunate IMO ... we are better today after the 2nd round phase ... and if we gonna meet again - the question of WHO will win is still very much arguable at this stage IMO ...

Fabien
Gary, Ronny, Larry, Mickey
Becks, Keano, Veron, Giggsy
Ole, Ruud

They'd try to defend for a 0-0 and I'm sure they can't nick a goal like they did the last two OT games this time. If it does all end 0-0, I'm sure we'd win on penalties, Owen & co are SHIT at penalties.

:) It came to me in a vision ;)
We'll know at 11:30 GMT if it will come true, because if they get Deportivo then they're going out IMO. But I hope they get Real Madrid because that would be fascinating.

I think your line up looks quite good, but I would change Keane with Butt. Keane has played this role before for United and Ireland, he is comfortable in it.
