Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Blackburn Rovers defender Chris Samba, skysports.com understands.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has made defensive reinforcements one of his top priorities this summer and he is eyeing a move for Samba.

Wenger is thought to be a fan of the Congo stopper and sees him as the right man to add a bit of power to the Gunners' rearguard.

Arsenal are believed to have made an enquiry for Samba during the January transfer window and now Wenger is keen to rekindle their interest.

Arsenal lost out to Manchester United for Samba's Blackburn team-mate Phil Jones and Wenger has now focused his attention on Samba, who is under contract until 2015.

Blackburn would be loathe to lose both Jones and Samba, but they could find it hard to reject Arsenal's overtures should they make a bid for the 27-year-old with Samba thought to be interested in a move to the Emirates.

I don't think our residen Arses are fans. Perhaps Wenger is trying to put together some sort of little and large comedy combo with Walcott or Wilshere or something?

To be fair, I wouldn't want us signing Samba.

It's not the right answer in my book - we had all this last season with Hangeland. It's one thing being a big fecker in a largely static defence - quite another in an attacking team where you get islolated and exposed to pace. Hence our interest in players like Smalling and Jones.

I think them signing Samba would be like us signing Adam. Just seems ridiculous.

I don't think he's as bad as people are making out. But actually thinking about it a bit more, is he better than Djourou and Vermaelen? The answer would be an emphatic no. So it would probably be a pointless exercise.

Samba's not a Wenger type player, that's for sure.

He's a superb defender but a little clueless with the ball at his feet. Like some have already mentioned, he wouldn't fit in to Wenger's philosophy and Arsenal will probably look to a defender with a few more ball playing attributes. The comparison with Hangeland is a brilliant one - massive, commanding, good in the air (at both ends) and strong in the tackle. Perfect for a lesser Premier League club that spends a lot of time on the back foot, but probably not for an attacking, trophy chasing team like Arsenal.

He's a big lad and a strong defender, but I've got doubts about his recovery pace particularly with regard to the high line we play with. He's a good defender in a back-up-against-the-wall situation where his presence will help as well as in set-piece situations. Can see him being exposed in open play though.

Arsenal fans must be gutted at missing out on Jones. He just seems to me the perfect signing for Arsenal. An English centre half with years ahead of him, real leadership qualities, a natural defender and comfortable with the ball at his feet.

On the subject of Blackburn, they really will struggle if Samba and Jones both leave. They'll need some seriously good replacements to avoid relegation.

Smalling would've been a much better fit than Jones. They need some height at the back. Vermalaen and Jones are similar heights.

Thank feck we have them both.

Neither was Sol Campbell but he was great for them during the "invincibles" season among others.

True but we don't need him as we have Vidic who does them same no non-sense defending job only infinately better.

Samba is exactly the type of player Arsenal's back four needs, and would provide them with the type of influence they have been lacking since Sol Campbell left.

Don't see the comparison with Campbell at all. He was lightning quick. Even during his second stint at Arsenal. When you defend as high up the pitch as Arsenal this is crucial.

Samba, well, isn't.

They're both big, strong black men but the similarity ends there.

The comparison with Hangeland is much more accurate.

Sol Campbell used to be pretty good with the ball at his feet, I remember him going on mad runs with the ball for both Spurs and England when he was young,... usually ended with him falling over to be fair, but just because he's big and slow now doesn't mean he was always that way.

Samba and Hangelaand are however, both big and slow.

I don't think that Samba is the answer for Arsenal, they should be looking more at Gary Cahill; who I personally think would be a very good signing for them.

Samba is not good enough, he would be ok in the league, but in Europe - I don't think that he would be up to it.

It's all well and good Arsenal fans being critical of Samba but:

  • Is he proven in the Premier League? Yes.
  • Would he give them a bit of bottle? Yes.
  • Would he help defend set pieces? Yes.
And most importantly....

  • Is he better then Squilacci and Koscielni? feck yes.
There's no point bringing in another young centre half. If they're gunna bring someone in then Samba would be ideal surely?

I kind of agree with you but Campbell, Adams, Keown and Bould weren't quite pacey players.

Clearly they're buying him to replace Bendtner.. :)

I think he is

If they sign Samba they are getting a beast of a guy who would bully strikers and command everything at set pieces. Arsenal lack a big guy who is not afraid to get stuck in. He would be a positive influence on the younger players there aswell.

Sure was quick for his size, but can you imagine Wenger buying a CB for his speed rather than physical presence at this point in time?

Samba won't join Arsenal, Blackburn will be reluctant to sell him after the departure of Jones and he's on a long-term contract. Blackburn will supposedly only accept huge offers for him, which is not likely for Arsenal.

He is a very commanding presence; I will give give him that, he looks good at Blackburn but I'm not too sure that he will shine at Arsenal. I think he may well be found out in Europe, I'm far from convinced that Samba is Champions League quality.

He would appear to be a short term solution to a very long term problem and would probably cost the guts of €8million. I personally think that Wenger would be much wiser to break the bank and go for Cahill, he would be a much longer term solution than Samba and in my opinion if a far better player.

Samba is top 3 on the head in the PL. If he got to play in a team like Arsenal where they can create chances for him it's going to make a big difference. I rate this man quite high, and just think about players like Ben Haim in Chelsea and you see it's not such a big deal to start with. There's not an endless stream of good defenders out there.

Yeah, if you compare him to players who've utterly flopped at big clubs he's going to come out of it alright.
