Football is about glory, it is about doing things
I think I started a thread asking about him last year, and got some replies along the lines of 'meh'. He was decent, but not better than Ritchie Jones even, never mind others. However, it seems now that he is standing out at Reserves, from all the comments I have seen of 'Hewson looked excellent', 'Hewson is a very good player' and so on. Is he a late bloomer? Is a lack of quality competition making him look better than he is? Or is something else going on, like maybe people are just noticing him now? Either way, what are people's opinions on him?

Decent player. No point hyping our young players and then people expecting finished products when they make it into the first team.

has far more potential than Ritchie Jones. i've thought him to be very promising for a while now, certainly not 'meh'. wouldn't surprise me to see him go out on loan in january.

He's surprised me. I was a bit "meh" about him, but recent games he's really looked good. Great workrate, box-to-box, seems to sense danger, can use the ball well, has a good shot on him.

Far better chance of him making it than Richie Jones, or David Jones, ever had.

One of those players - not the most technically talented, but has an eye for goal, and has heart.

Like Gaz, and Nicky Butt.

Has a chance.

Darron G is in front of him though.

Is he better than Jones(David) was??!! I don't think so!!

He is faster than Jones was and looks tougher too. Some times that counts for a lot in midfield. His passing and vision aren't bad either. With some luck and lost of hard work he could make it.

Two totally different players in a number of ways so it is very difficult to compare them.

Hewson is not that quick by the way either!

a Chelsea-supporting mate of mine watched all our Champions Youth Cup games and said Hewson reminded him quite a bit of a young Steven Gerrard. he's definitely more that kind of player than a Scholes (although he does seem to have that knack of timing late runs into the box). more dynamic a player than David Jones, but not as good technically.

Released by Altrincham in March, currently unattached. Slightly overhyped, I reckon.

Shame, but it's a harsh game. Always amazing when someone less talented like Paul McShane still have a career.

Also goes to show (once again) just how difficult it is to predict which youngsters will make it in top level football, let alone at United.

This is always my worry re Tunnicliffe. Look at some of the comments at the top and replace Hewson with Tunncliffe and they still make perfect sense.

Having said that though I'm more confident in Tunnicliffes ability to make it here and at least at a decent standard of football, but as SecondFig says it shows the pitfalls associated with predicting a young players potential.

Fair point although Hewson was never as dominant as Tunnicliffe at the same level. Its such a difficult shout to make with all the kids coming though. Look at Gill, id have put serious money on him to have left the club long ago.

I tend to be overly positive regarding our own youngsters but I do think theres 4 or 5 there now who could become 1st team regulars.

Hewson was decent/good. You have to add in the factor of who we had at the time blocking his progress. You would have to be 'special' to put a first teamer on the bench. Times change. I wouldn't worry about it so much

There are numerous factors to consider it's true but I think anyone can predict someones potential to a degree. You can't however, predict the future squad including purchase/injury/opportunities/illness/life/how they'll mature etc.

Also this seasons star could be yesterdays news. We always look to bring in better young players. Pogba might not make it for example, because we might buy this amazing player or maybe we'll bring in this exceptional kid who's just a better player or has a bettr mentality....

The youth set up is strong and there are gaps in the squad. I think it's the first time we can say that for many years. It helps, in addition to that, that you can lose five or so games in the league and still win it. That gives kids further opportunity.

Same here - like you I think Tunnicliffe has been consistently more impressive than Hewson, but it's just impossible to predict which players will kick on and improve from one season to the next. Pogba and Morrison are both superb technically, but don't always dominate games as they should. Tunnicliffe imposes himself upon matches far more consistently, buy lacks their technical ability - I'd hope all three can break onto the fringes of the first team squad in the next season, but I remember being excited by players like Jones and Eagles, or further back Mulryne and Notman...

That said, I do think last year's youth team is the most promising I've seen in well over a decade.

Good point and one I thought that would be the likely outcome 18 months ago. However I think Tunnicliffe has made great improvements to his game over the last 18 months he also has pace to go with his strength and stamina something Hewson never had. Tunnicliffe still needs to work on the technical side of his game but seems to have the determination to succeed.

On trial for an icelandic club called Fram. Very sad to see a once promising youngster going to Iceland to search for football. I thought he was going to be a lot better.

Just scored from a free kick from the half way line in a pre-season match.

It's the 2nd goal in the video
/ Efni

There are two former Rangers youth and a Chelsea one as well in Fram.

Their manager is a former PL player and is "known" as to have saved Sir Alex Ferguson's job.
