Sounds to me as if Gary Neville may not be getting a regular start for a while.

Although it is not the fate he would want, if the £29.3million capture from Leeds does miss out, it will save Ferguson a potential selection headache given O’Shea’s superb recent form.

The Irishman has excelled at centre-back and on the left side of defence already this season and stepped into Gary Neville’s right-back role with ease last night, providing useful attacking support overlapping Beckham, while retaining an assured manner in his defensive duties.

“Every so often in football, you see a young player who turns a corner and becomes an important part of the future of a club,” said Ferguson.

“The more games we give him, the more experience he will get and the more he will improve.

“He has great composure on the ball, is lightning quick and has a good physical presence.

“In the future centre-half will be his position but when he can turn in displays likes that at full-back it is a good option for me

Yes.. another really good Irishman. And coming from Ireland I know that there are many more.

I really wish he'd keep at one position though. This is where I think Brown went wrong - he was a CB all his time in the youth team and then Ferguson played him at RB when he broke into the first team.

Gary Neville is a red through and through but JOS has class written all over him. Is this a sign that even if O'Shea is played as CB that Neville's days are numbered.

I think his inability on the ball is something that makes him very un-Man Utd.

Good point. Rio and John can become the best CB pairing in Europe over the next decade.

I agree although it's all good experience I suppose. Fergie doesn't want to drop JOS so he fits him in at RB to accommodate Blanc. This is where it goes wrong and the partnership, which is the future there is no doubt, between JOS and Rio should be allowed to develop. Yes Blanc has the experience and not a little skill, but his shortcomings which are well documented, means that the defence has to try and adjust to them and can be left exposed as a result. JOS should settle in at CB as I'm not sure RB is his position at all.

no but class shows when a player can be brought in out of position and still add something extra.

John will play CD for the next three weeks tho, with Rio injured and all...
