A rumour gaining some momentum is that channel 9 will not show world cup games if Australia do not qualify. They are heavily committed, both financially and timewise, to showing AFL football. Channel 10 are in the same boat, SBS can't afford it, channel 7 aren't interested in buying the rights as they want to see 9 struggle.
:(

The BBC and ITV have just paid a shed load of cash to show the world cup over here. In previous years they have got to televise the rights for very little amounts of cash and this years is the first to really cost loads. Once again the money train is taking over.(a German company sold the rights over here, not sure if it's the same with your lot)
Having said that, whilst all the negotiations were going on, there was talk that all countries are allowed there own countries games and the semi's + final relatively cheap, it was the televising of ALL the matches that was under threat. So you may be ok :)

The rights to the World Cup are wholly owned by the Kirch Group, a german media company. They are selling the rights to bidders around the world, not necessarily state owned stations, at massive prices cos their...........well cnuts basically. Although IMO the blame lies with the money grabbing cnuts at FIFA who sold the rights to one company in the first place.

Feck, if this is true..... <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

SBS have done such a good job over the years, Channel 9 gets it, and fecks it up. If stations aren't going to show the most popular sporting event in the world, why the feck do they buy the rights. To feck everybody off, or just to be complete cnuts.

SBS deserve the rights on principle, even if they can't afford it. Another example of too much money in the modern game.

That's true. Packer only bought it so SBS can't so their usual "Let's stop all programming nad have 2 weeks of world cup" (which is excellent) but it hurts 9's ratings.

Packer is an asshole. He's bought it so no-one else can have it but he doesn't want to show it.

Oz is only a two hour time difference from Japan and South Korea meaning we would have had most games nearly live anyway

Watch out, Pay TV will get the rights. Channel 9 will show the final, semi-final etc, but i think by the way things are going that the matches will end up either on Optus or Foxtel, my bet Foxtel. :(

That is a problem but what about pubs or summer holidays?
For me the time differance would be a bigger problem with the games kicking off in the early hours of the morning <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

Us Aussies always have to put up with that.

Eg. Early Monday Morning. I stayed up all night.

1am : Sunderland vs Poo
3am : United vs Arse
6am : Australia vs Uruguay
9am : Got to bed.

Now thats dedication.
