Well you've kind of answered your own question. It allowed the team in question to bring on a specialist kicker at an oppurtune moment by faking an injury.

Quite a clever idea but poorly executed on this occasion. The sheer volume of fake blood spilling from his mouth was the first hint but winking to the player coming on in full view of the numerous tv cameras was border line retarded.
