Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

This level of hype is not healthy.

It’ll all end in tears.
Begrudging admiration for all the hype men tbh.

From "Fergie's appointed", to "OranjeCafe" (*hurls*) to "he's come home" to "OleBall", it's admirable to still have the will to hype at this point.

Sporting fans have called him incredibly stubborn so yeah not expecting anything else.
Well, kind of.
He's very dedicated to the type of player that works hard, even if they're not always delivering on the pitch.
And here, he was very set on playing a specific way given the players we had.

Remember, we din't have the resources and stability to go for all kinds of players, so we had to not only look for talent in our price range, but also players that fit his requirements, not just positioning, but versatility and (crucially) personality.
He built a group of players that enjoyed each other's company, a united group, as it were.
Therefore if he didn't get a player that fit his requirements, he'd keep playing the others, even if sometimes it didn't make much sense to us fans.

But here's the thing, he also knows his limits. Just like Sporting grew with him, so did he grow with us. He became better and the experience he gained as also reflected in his flexibility.
Remember, fans love to manage from the stands, so we'd always be bitching about things that weren't working, players that needed to come out and go in.
And the truth is, with time he's become better in that as well. More often than not, he sees the flaws we see, he makes the changes and subs we would, and the performances reflect that.

So, expect him to be stubborn when he knows he's right, but the other things, maybe not so much.

Yes, yes and more yes. And twice on Sundays.

I’m not getting carried away but…

He has so much charisma, not to slag off Ten Hag at all, but it's like night and day.

He also is saying all the right things in terms of Identity and ideologies and how he wants to start immediately on how he wants to press etc.

And in the end I think ETH lost the patience of a lot of the players due to this.

I believe the players will respond much more to Amorim. His charisma could be an important piece of the puzzle in transforming the mentality of this team.

First impressions are very good. Can’t wait to get this international break out of the way and see what he can with this team.

I don’t feel like we’ve seen hype like this since 2013. No other manager has had such a build up and fanfare. Not even Jose.

Personally, stung by Ole and Erik it all feels a bit hollow for me at the moment. Maybe this will change when there is football to watch.

I’m hopeful, and generally positive but pretty circumspect about the whole situation.

Ruud’s tenure was a numb blur for me, but I only watched the Leicester cup game and the Chelsea 1-1 because it is pretty difficult to follow an English team these days if you live in England and don’t want to bend over for the privilege.

I just went to the games TBF

Blown away by his interview and charisma, truly feels that the tour touched him and meant something. My excitement is unhealthy right now.

Recipe for disaster relying on those two. There has to be somebody at the club who are protecting these players, because they let down coach after coach.
A new coach. New beginnings.

Ruben. Bienvenido. Welcome to Manchester United. This might be an easy one, but why have you joined?
“First of all, I think I felt a connection with the club. And when I say with the club, everybody knows Manchester United. But I feel the connection with the people in the club and that is very important for me because I want to work with people that I like and I feel a connection. The second point is the history of this club. All the people are hungry for success and I feel that this is the place that I want to be also because of that, because you can be part of something special, not just one more. And that is something that I really like. And of course, because of the fans, because in Portugal you listen a lot, a lot of stuff from the media. But when you see the games here, when you see the games, the interaction with the managers, with the players, even in difficult moments, I think it is a special club.”

When you say the people, do you mean Omar, Dan and Jason?
“Of course. Sir Jim and Sir Dave, but especially Omar, Dan and Jason. I felt a connection and I felt we are in the same moment. We want to do something special in the special club. So, I think that was a key point.”

Someone said that Cristiano Ronaldo called you the poet. Is that true?
“Yeah. But it's like a funny thing because when I speak, I speak, I think I speak from the heart. I think the people feel that it was something just to have fun.”

And you did play here twice. What are your memories?
“Not very good. I didn't win, so I like to win. This is so important for me, to have fun but to win. I remember the crowd. We were winning 2-0 with Braga, but then they turned up and it was over for us. We lose that game. So it's a special place.”

Do you want to use that power of the crowd now that you're in charge?
“Of course, if you are a coach and you don't use the most important thing… of course the players play the game, but the environment is so important because they play better if the environment is good. So, of course, we need the supporters to win football matches.”

The stadium is amazing right now. You can feel there's something here. Does that excite you that you can be at the centre of this?
“When Manchester United talked to me, Omar, they told me about their plans. It's a real honour because I was the first choice to start that path. So it's a great responsibility. But you feel honoured and excited to be part of that. And we know that if the team plays well and wins games, everything looks so much better and the people really start to believe in the new stadium and new ideas. So, we know that we are the engine of the football. Manchester United is the engine of the Premier League in my opinion.”

What are your first impressions of the the place and the staff, and the training ground? Here is for matchdays and it might seem like you feel at home and relaxed already, but Carrington is where you'll mainly be and it's being redeveloped...
“The most important thing is the feeling of belonging of the club. And we have history in that department.”

So you want a very strong link between the Academy and the first team coming together?
“I think it's important because a lot of people now talk about the 3-4-3 and the 4-3-3 and all that stuff. But when I think as a player or as a team-mate of Manchester United, it is not a system or formation, it's like the character of the players, the way they see the club. So we have to focus on that before the everything of how we play, how we press. The most important thing for me at this moment is to create the principles, the identity and the character that we had in the past.”

So what what drives your footballing philosophy?
“In one word: team. The team is the most important thing for me. And if you work as a team, then the talent individually is going to shine. But if I have to explain the importance of everything, it is the character, the way we fight, the way we play, and we must have an identity. If our players take the shirt, they will know that it is the Manchester United team. Everybody thinks the same, running back, playing, enjoying. This is what drives me. I can say the popular thing, which is to win. Everybody wants to win and I want to win with my players, with the fans, but with an identity and one idea, that is the thing that I am focused on all the time.”

So is that reflected in your personality as well? When you speak to people, we saw you yesterday saying hello to everyone. That matters a lot to you?
“Yes. Because I think this is the fun part. I'm a small part of the club. I know that the manager or head coach is so important in the club because you have in your hands the engine of the club. I understand that, but I want to be part of something. I don't want to be just in charge. So I want everybody together. It will be more fun and so much easier to reach the goals.”

So what kind of working culture do you try to create at clubs and has that always been the same or is it something you've adapted as you've developed as a coach?
“Well, you don't know my past as a football player, but I was a football player and I played in any position. So I played at right-back, left-back, centre-back, midfielders, winger, number 10, number eight. I didn't play goalkeeper and striker.”

There's still time…
“Yeah, I will try. So two positions. So I was a team player and for me that is important. And also because I was a team player, sometimes I had to stay on the bench. So I know everything my players feel. So when I think about a team, I think about every player, about the fans, the feeling, everything is on my mind.”

So coming in the middle of the season, what are your key priorities?
“We know that we need time, but we have to win time. To win time is to win games. But the most important thing for me is identity. So since day one we will start with our identity. Of course we are going to prepare the games, but we will focus a lot in our game model. How to play, how to press, these small things, small details. You cannot go 100% on every detail because it will be confusing for the players. So if I have to say one thing, my main goal, my first goal, is identity.”

So when your first game is here in two weeks, I'll be standing over there. What kind of team can I expect from Ruben Amorim's United?
“It’s hard to say. It's hard to say. I want to say beautiful things to you, but I'm really honest. I think you will see an idea. You could like it or not, I don't know, but you will see an idea. You will see a positioning. You will see something that we want to reach that kind of level. You will feel that. But we have to know that it's like two trainings before the first match. This is the best league in the world. But if I have to say something to you, you will see an idea. This I can guarantee.”

If we see an idea, there'll be patience and belief. And there's an awareness that this is a long-term project. You have young players like Kobbie, Amad, Garna, Rasmus, Leny, almost coming back from injury. There's excitement at that potential...
“Yeah, yeah. But I don't want to say that we need time because we are a young team. They are prepared. They are prepared to cope with the demands of playing for Manchester United. They should be because they are here. We know it will take time and we will try to win time with the games. But we have to start since day one without fear, without thinking that they are not used to playing like this. This is not on my mind. They will start on the first day with our idea, no matter what. That's the goal.”

Okay, let's talk about the stadium. You had your tour yesterday with Jason, Mr. Man United! He knows everything. What did you make of the day?
“It's different. Like you said, you go inside Carrington, you feel it. But when you come here, it's so different. You see the trophies, you see the tragedy that we have as a club. The history. So you can understand the history, after the crash, then we were European champions. This kind of strength, I think it is important to put in our team. When the players come here, they should make the same tour with the same guy all the time. I think this is very important to do. It is one thing that you have to feel that this is Manchester United and it's normal if you are a lot of years without winning, you start losing that. So you have to be very clear on the message that you want to put on the players. So I think we need to put all the players doing the same thing, to regain that feeling.”

So that you think that history should inspire the team?
“That's for sure. That's for sure. That's why we are Manchester United. That's why we are… a long time ago, we don't win the Premier League. But if you ask, Manchester United is the biggest club in England. So this is part of the history, it is not now. So we have to address that, to show that and to try to win again.”

And we're going to finish off. I want you to give a message to all Manchester United fans watching. This is your opportunity to speak to them. What would you say?
“That is a great responsibility. And the first thing is that I'm really honored to be here. It was my only choice because I think I really feel how big this club is. And then I will do everything for the team. I will defend my players if I have to, all the time, against everybody. That is a key point for me, and I will try to do everything to put this club in the place that it belongs. And I believe a lot that we are going to succeed.”
So we are moving from "process" and "project to "idea" and "identity"

You will see a positioning. You will see something that we want to reach that kind of level. You will feel that. But we have to know that it's like two trainings before the first match. This is the best league in the world. But if I have to say something to you, you will see an idea. This I can guarantee.

Inject it into me.

Yup. I am firmly in the "once bitten, twice shy" group. I am eager to see if he could get the existing players to stop playing like headless chickens.

I'm optimistic, but I'm not going to get excited over an interview.

I remember people getting excited by LVG's first press conference because he was so different from the very dour Moyes. Then Mourinho came with his charisma. We know how that turned out.

So it’s ok to visit a new team and talk to the people there without a permit but if you put a camera there and record what he says it’s illegal?
Yes the moment a word of his has been recorded, a special alarm rings in the middle of Buckingham Palace.

I love that he said he wants to play the right way from minute one.

Ten Hag tried his in his first 2 games and got battered, then we changed it and had a good season. At the time I thought it was great he was adaptable, but in the long run it cost us as our second season became the actual 'first season'... and his system failed miserably.

I hope Amorim is true to his words. Play that system. Don't change it. That way we can see the situation for what it is. Some of the players will not be up to scratch... or perhaps even Amorim himself isn't. It's usually pretty obvious straight away which one it is - usually a mixture of both, but by significantly altering the system to the players deficiencies we don't get to truly evaluate.

Absolutely.

It’s clear Shaw and Rashford will be key.

Honestly Shaw might be key in theory, but it would pretty naive to put too much hope and faith into him with his fitness record.

I'd have more hope in a Rashford rebirth than Shaw being a key figure for us, purely due to his buttery biscuit base.

Is it possible to watch the interview without MUTV subscription? I can't find it.

won't last long I guess

this is the piece that caught my attention the most....it was all about being driven by the Team and by the Character of the team and players. Very impressive and you can see just from him speaking the passion he has and how it comes across. As a player, you can feel that and it should inspire you so you don't let him down.....a true players coach

Correct. The club owe both Shaw and Rashford too so it would not make sense to turn its back on them.
Rashford will get back to world class levels under Amorim. And shaw will stay injury free all season with Amorims new staff.

Ye i think he’s the only manager after fergie that isn’t trying to use excuses by saying it’s going to take time etc. he also isn’t using the youth excuse with the young squad we have..: he said there here because they know the standards.

Give Shaw the captains arm band! In the words of LVG: 'My captain shall always play'
