Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

He’s shitting himself 3 months into the job. He needs to get a fecking grip of himself like he carries no responsibility for the poor results.
He's been taking the blame for weeks, he has been taking responsibility. It's time he puts these players in the firing line- they should be embarrassed at where they at.

I genuinely don't think its the system. I think we're struggling to progress the play on the ball through the middle and its affecting everything else.

Most top teams would struggle having to scrap every game, and due to us consistently having to force the ball long or to the flanks, its leading to pressure within our own half.

In the big games, we've seen how we can progress the ball through the defence. So what is the current problem?

Our defenders and central midfielders are not able to get the ball to advanced areas of the pitch. At present our defenders are still learning to be more progressive with the ball. Our central area which they would normally progress the ball through after rotating the ball across the backline is occupied by a great ball winner and not much else. Mainoo doesn't offer himself well for the ball, and in the instances he does receive the ball, he's incredibly slow in his decision making and ability to work with his teammates to get the ball higher up the pitch. In addition, our wide centre backs aren't yet comfortable dribbling into midfield or passing the ball into either of the two no.10's. This leaves one of three options. Passing the ball to Ugarte, playing it long to Zirkzee or a switch of play to the flanks, where we have defensive wing backs.

Our current wing backs don't have the energy and attacking impetus to consistently pin opponents back at this moment. Our centre backs don't have the confidence to use their advantage of being part of a back 3 to progress the ball forward. Mainoo is not a good ball playing midfielder and also lacks the energy and positional awareness to be effective in midfield.

I think the defence will eventually pick things up, I saw good signs from Yoro on the ball and I actually think Mazraoui will eventually be a wide centre back. I also think we have the option of dropping Bruno into the number 8 position or using Collyer as an alternative, as Ugarte is essentially in a midfield 2 on his own. I think we have to accept the hardship at wing back for the time being or promote Harry Amass into the left wing back position, whilst using Dalot on the right. Maybe we can experiment with Mainoo in one of the 10 positions, but at this moment, I think his position is our current weakest link and responsible for our poor play on the ball. At least if we have a functional midfield to support a tepid ball playing defence, it will give us more control of the game and lead us to have less attacking presence in our own half.

Why has Amorim got so much money in the bank with people saying I will back him even if we get relegated? He has won the Portuguese league twice, and has been a manager for like what? about 5 years. It's not like he won the Champions league with Sporting.

Isn't it obvious? After watching these players under EtH for so long being so rubbish? It's more that there is no belief these players are united quality.

How can you possibly judge a manager if he doesn't have his players for crying out loud. Get him his players, we see how he does, then he deserves to be RIGHTLY criticized

I like how honest he is and he's been saying this after wins too not just after defeats. He warned us from day one that this season would be a rollercoaster. Fans need to stick with it and be patient. There's no easy fix for the situation we are in.

This is every manager's life that doesn't coach one of the top teams

I think the fact here is - any manager who wants to play front foot progressive football, even Ten Hag himself, would be 8 players short because all of our senior defenders are so one paced, the full backs so lacking in any form of offensive quality and the forward line is just mediocre.

This is not just about meeting Amorim's specific needs but our inability to compete physically and technically. You need to be able to keep the ball under pressure, can we? You need to be able to circulate the ball quickly and accurately so as to unsettle teams, can we? When games are tight you need to take your chances, can we?

Before Amorim this team and the one before it failed at these basics. If they could do the basics we wouldn't need 8 players. So short of hiring Ole or Mourinho who could play the sit deep and break tactics, every manager we hire will need guarantees that this squad will be overhauled. We might as well overhaul it with Amorim given the fact that by May he will have an intimate knowledge of the squad and what needs to come immediately.

I think he is trying to jolt them, to extract a response from them if they have any semblance of professional pride left in them that statement ought to sting. They don't deserve any coddling or protection when they collectively and individually shit the bed and cost the team points due to schoolboy errors.
Agreed, they need stand up like men and be counted. What he said is not much different from what every single news outlet has been saying for months. Maybe it will hit home, coming directly from the manager. Some of the stuff I hear on talksports is far worse

I hope everyone rallies behind the manager. Every player right now is replaceable.

Well you having a laugh if you think these players are good, they are exactly the quality of the pl position we're in.

Football is actually quite simple , you bring in QUALITY players and have a good team to make a manager succeed. This team is rotten because of years of utter rubbish recruitment and it's finally showing, it just so happens Amorim is that manager that has to manage them

You can still judge a manager even if he’s not signed players, they do make decisions still. The truth is unless he wins enough matches he won’t be around long enough for us to sign players for him.

We won’t get rid of these players for free right?
The players we most desperately need to get rid of are on prohibitive wages, so yes, we're unlikely to get significant transfer fees for them. At best, we'll get their wages off the books which will free up some spending for a few cheap-ish signings.

Gone are the days of billion-pound squad overhauls. It's more a case of "work with what you've got".

Early on, when he came in, I faresaw this and stated that if he doesn't supplement the squad with youth he is done here because we don't have the money to buy all that he needs at once and he won't survive multiple windows having to rely on these players.

Say we sign 5 players in the summer, if survives to the summer that is, they still won't be enough to cover all the holes in the squad. He looks like he needs a couple of faster CBs, a couple of wingbacks, a CM, a striker and another 10. That's at least 7 players, some of whom will cost north of £60m and even at an average of £40m each that's still £280m.

However if he could bed in a couple of academy players with better attributes that the dross we are putting out maybe you need about four new players immediately. Let's say you have Gore, Collyer, Amass and a few No.10s from the youth and they play at an acceptable level, you mitigate the need to sign a whole new team, something we know he won't get.

If he doesn't do this, he is dead in the water.
Yeah, I had those positions in mind but had a goalkeeper instead of a 10.

The problem with the academy is that the highly talented players are mostly in the u-18 and seem a few years away from being ready to get a chance.

Forest nearly got relegated last year, and somehow they have a better squad than we do all of a sudden?

But it doesn't have to take for ever either. Look at Forrest, from the Championship to 3rd in the league right now in two years, with a budget a fraction of ours.
We need to see massive improvements starting from next season. No excuses

The money's gone. We're not going to build an entire squad in Amorim's image, whether we want to or not.

Only if he's inherited a good squad with quality players, like Moyes after Fergie

You seen this squad? Look at the attack for crying out loud, people wonder why we ain't scoring goals

Look at the midfield, and people wonder why we don't control games or create as much.

I don't understand how for so long poeple on here don't have this reality check. We have fallen so far behind many pl teams have a better attack/squad than us. it's the reality we're in

and here's me thinking INEOS recruited smart football people to make shrewd smart cheap signings, guess not eh? time to get rid of INEOS?

He can do or say what he wants as far as I’m concerned with this lot. Every single type of message never seems to get through to the players and we are at the beginning of a cultural reset, it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better.

This guy hasn’t even had a single player transfer in despite the fact his system fits the squad like a round peg in a square hole. It’s actually amazing how fast at this level something can click with the right pieces in place, he hasn’t even got a proper wing back in the squad and his tactics are pretty key to that.

Don’t get us relegated (which isn’t likely anyway), somehow see if you can get a cup run and/or European run and build properly in the summer, that’s all he needs to do this season. But we need to see a clear out in the summer, it needs to be efficient, perhaps even brutal with some shocks but if it doesn’t happen I give up all hope with INEOS/Glazers.

Garnacho is the obvious option. He's got pace and has an eye for goal, which is something we're clearly lacking with this starting 11.
And this is the real issue, it’s not that no United manager has ever tried this before, LVG was convinced that 3-4-3, 3421 would revolutionise the club, he drilled the players bought Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Schnederlain, Schweinsteiger, R Falcao and had Players like Carrick, Rooney, DDG, M Depay

He was so confident in his squad that he sold Wellbeck and Evans.

LVG 3421 in his first season
D D Gea /S Romero

C Smalling / P Jones
M Rojo / J Evans
D Blind /T Blackett

Valencia/ A Young
A Herrera/M Snchederlain
B Sweinsteiger/M Feillani
L Shaw / D Blind

W Rooney /J Mata
R Falcao/ RVP
A Dimaria / Adnan Jan

We complained about this squad and yet 2 maybe 3 of our current squad would get into LVG or Jose squad !

Ruben was telling the truth this is the worst squad in United’s post war history relevant to how much they are paid weekly!
Fans accept this as some sort of progress
what’s even worse are his stats are wrong which is a huge concern, he has three wins from 11 and before today it was three wins from 10.

Everton won (4-0) (H)
Man City won (1-2) (A)
Southampton won (3-1) ( H)

Two draws
Ipswich (1-1) (A)
Liverpool (2-2) (A)

And six defeats
Arsenal 2-0 (A)
Notts Forrest 2-3 (H)
Wolves 2-0 (A)
Bournemouth 0-3 (H)
Newcastle 0-2 (H)
Brighton 1-3 (H)

Amorim’s PL record
P 11 W3 D2 L6 GS15 GC20 PTS = 11
Average points per game 1
Average Goals scored in PL 1.36
Average Goals conceded PL 1.82

Previous Positions
P11 W4 D3 L4 GS12 GC12 PTS 15
Average points per Pl Game 1.36
Average goals scored per game 1.09
Average Goaks conceded 1.09

As we can all see the defence has hit significantly worse playing a 3/5 man defence that simply doesn’t work.

Ruben is talking himself into the sack, like he said you have to win games to win time, United are behemoth of a club, there’s no Shame in admitting the job is too big for an inexperienced PL coach or resign because it’s clear you need at least 7/8 players to implement your system and it’s highly doubtful SJR/Ineos are going to back you to the sum of £300m to do that because if they were going to do that, they would have made at least £70-80m available this winter after selling 2/3 players and buying you an Elite left wing back and Number 9 and they would have had those deals ready for January 1 2025!

Just seen his post match press conference, I have to say that sounded like a guy who's cracking up a little bit. He won't change, we're the worst United side ever.

Sounds a little bit like a man on the edge if you ask me. Such a shame because I really like him, Ten Hag was a bore and I hated listening to his slow negative talk. Amorim seemed to have a charisma.

If he wants to survive he needs to change the formation, the players won't change or improve so he should shut up shop and bore us to death with tight negative tactics all season. We don't score enough so we need to stop the ball going in our net. Then he can spend in the summer and hopefully start implementing his ideas over the summer months. He needs to survive until then.

Something else, that i think is worth asking, is what will success be defined as under Amorim? A League title? Regular top 4 finishes?

How long will he get to achieve that? We keep talking about this almost as being a long term project. But what is long term? 3-5 years? How many managers even get that long?

Is there a succession plan with a list of managers that share his philosophy if he doesn't work out..

This manager wanted to join in the summer, it was all geared towards that until the board told him it was now or never, so he joined now as this was his dream job. Hasn't had a preseason , hasn't had a single transfer window, and joined a disjointed team during the busiest period of the year trying to teach the squad a new system. Let's give him time and judge him after a few signings and a preseason. The previous manager had 3 preseasons, spent 600m and left us in 13th place. Let's have some patience, and see how this plays out and stop being reactionary. The league is done, we still have a chance in the Europa and the FA Cup.

Do you think the system he’s implemented is perfect and has no issues, and do you think he’s got the maximum out of them so far?

The problem is he’s taken an attack that was already awful and somehow made it worse. His system has sacrificed an attacking player for an extra defender and yet we look even more vulnerable defensively and even less likely to score. It’s been a complete disaster.

The whole thing is just a shambles. And some of his quotes recently sound like a man who’s quickly realising he’s in over his head.

We were 9 points better off this time last season. Those were the glory days.
This is quite baffling really isn’t it, when you think how painfully awful we were and how horrible that team was to watch for 99% of the fanbase. I’d like to say the standard has picked up in the league this season from all the teams, but I think that’s clearly false.

Think there are a lot of teams, surprising teams who have improved beyond belief this season. There are now very few teams who are pushovers. Dare I say except us.

He needs signings. I can't imagine the higher ups would be willing to sack their first appointment before giving him a single new player to work with. If they do it'll make them look a bit silly.

He doesn't sound like a man in over his head.
He sounds like a man who really can't believe a club as historically big as United have assembled such a massive shower of shit for a team

Yes cos we are in charge of the club we'll just boot INEOS out. The shrewdness is the fact they will spend next to nothing in the summer too under the guise of "PSR means we need to sell to buy" and make a shit tonne without spending.
