Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

What’s your point?
That somehow we've seen enough of Zirkzee to decide that he's not worthy of playing for Utd, based on performances in a squad widely acknowledged to be shit, under a terrible manager in ETH and now, a new manager to the league. At the same time, even mentioning the possibility that Amorim may not be astute enough in a league as challenging as the PL, is basically blasphemous.

The Dalot experiment is particularly infuriating. Hes so obviously bad in that role.
We don’t generally agree on a lot @VP89 but I appreciate your measured approach here. Dang, sometimes I hate the hold this club has on me.

Hope for Amorim. But we need to move past the “savior” idea. I genuinely believe that Rangnick couldn’t fix us and ETH was out of his depth and tactically inept. I don’t have many arguments left, sadly.

Sigh. We sucked today v Newcastle.

The thing with Ruben's "system" is that it isn't some magic way to win — it's just a football formation like any others. I don't know why we're so obsessed with one system at the expense of all others if it doesn't suit the squad.

And if we're planning on selling most of our current players anyway, who the hell cares if they learn a new system this season? They won't be here to play it in future anyway.
The point is to see who can actually contribute going forward into next season and who isn’t good enough.

I’m not sure what the answer is currently. In a vacuum, sure we sell 10 players from this squad and make massive upgrades in the squad for next year. But just losing every game isn’t the best way right now either. However, I also don’t want to just go for Ole counter ball again either.

I said it when we hired him and it’s proving true, but the biggest issue right now is we essentially have 0 quality in attack apart from Amad (which teams have now figured out and are doubling up on him). When you can’t score/create/present danger consistently, it becomes incredibly tough to get results even if as a coach you are doing everything right. It’s even harder when the squad is learning a new system

You've said nothing wrong so don't worry. Most of us know this squad is diabolical.

People keep saying he needs to change things up. No system is getting the best out of this squad because it's rubbish. Plain and simple.

We don't have the players for any formation.
Of course we do. Even just a decent coach like EtH managed 3rd place just 2 seasons ago, after he ditched his early attempts of changing the way we should play too much, and just tried to get the most out of the players at hand.
Ruud is most probably a worse coach then both EtH and Ruben and these very same players looked much better the few games he was in charge.

Ruben is trying something new that just doesn`t seem to suit our players at all. He has indicated that he is very stubborn and will never change his fundamentals. But here we are. We look just as awful as last seasons car crashes of performances against Brentford and Palace, and are now dangerously close to a relegation fight and i don`t think anyone is accepting going down.
Keeping Sporting up the table while he was doing the revolution there was one thing. The Portuguese league is not nearly as strong. He needs to play something that suits the players at hand better fairly soon. Something has to give.

Why play Dalot, who is predominatly a right sided player, on the left? Why play an ageing Eriksen and utterly over the hill Casemiro together in midfield, when neither of them have had any minutes in weeks? Why not start Mainoo and Yoro? Why constantly change the defence, with a different lineup each game and then mutliple changes per game? Why include Rashford in the squad but then leave him on bench when we desperately need a goal yet Hojlund, who is utter garbage, gets to play the whole game?

Why Ruben? WHY?
The alternatives are even worse.

RedCafe - we must rip-up EtHs work and start again, it'll be painful but it needs to be done and we'll support Amorim through it

RedCafe when we lose a few games - his system doesn't work and he needs to go
This isn't pain though this is agony. We don't look capable of winning another game.

Looking grim. I had high hopes for him but not convinced by the showing so far. Inflexible tactics, wrong player selections and game management.

Rightfully dropped Rashford and Garnacho for disciplinary reasons but unfortunately that’s our two goalscorers in a chronically low scoring side.

Eriksen and Casemiro against Bruno, Joelinton and Tonali is insane.

United managers keep making the same mistake which is that no one packs the fecking midfield. They do pack the defence and sometimes the attack but never the midfield.

Till United finds a manager who does that, they will keep being shit.

I agree that he shouldn't have been brought in mid-season, but I'm assuming Berrada got wind City may have been sniffing around as a potential Pep replacement and decided to move quickly.

Ten Hag should've obviously been sacked at seasons end and given the new manager an entire summer to build his squad with new players and not buy dross like Zirkzee.

Didn't Amorim ask to come in Summer 2025 and we said 'now or never'?

Who would you have started today?

Im a big fan of his. Only a few weeks ago we had headlines and memes around the fact that we've finally got one here, after beating city.
But i dont understand why hes repeating the same mistakes, Dalot as LWB wrecks his system, but hes played every single game. Erikson / Cas have always looked way below it when played as a 2, so why try again.

I thought we were getting a manager who is modern, talented and tactically astute and will take us places, it seems like we have signed a manager who talks well but in the end is very stubborn and clueless.

Is there no formation in the world except 3-4-3 for us which is basically 5-4-1. We hardly create anything and with soo many defenders we still concede goals after goals on crosses.

Why can't we try to have Amad on one side (RWB) and Antony on other side (LWB), both of them are hardworking players, heck atleast have one wingback who is able to take players on. our left CAM either its Bruno, Rashford or Garnacho does not have the ability to take players. Plus the positioning is all wrong of both CAM players on both sides, they are playing closer to LWB, leaving Hojlund completely alone with nobody even closer to him.

Manager needs to have a word with himself. We look to be on continued downward spiral with no stop and with every defeat players are losing confidence.

He needs to adapt his system to work in the PL or he’s done.

Your last sentence is where I'm at.

5 defenders so no offence, but still suck defensively. I always give managers time, but hard to see him survive relegation

Amorim has won two leagues to Slot's one. The difference between the two is the former inherited a broken club in transition, whilst the latter was handed a club in relatively good shape.

Well said. Very different circumstances.

To use an analogy, Slot got to drive the Red Bull F1 car, Amorim jumped in the Williams with a puncture.

I thought he was more flexible and creative with this his 343. Sticking Dalot and Mazraoui as wing backs and subbing centre backs for centre backs every game while losing is not what I envisaged. He seems to have given up already.

Agreed. While the players are showing how poor they are, Amorim also needs to show he can get them to do better. Can't just play a back 5 and keep losing without scoring.

The Dalot experiment is particularly infuriating. Hes so obviously bad in that role.
Dalot should have been gone years ago. He was almost out the door with the Milan loan 5 years ago. Why he is here still is beyond me. Shouldnt even be a discussion point for us to have

He's lost 5 of his last 6 league games and we've got Liverpool at Anfield coming up.

We have not scored a goal in something like 270 minutes of football, while conceding 7.

There aren't many positives to draw from that.

It was far worse under ten Hag. Now we are largely playing OK but getting done on set pieces and or through moments of individual stupidity.

Under EtH we had teams like Luton, Brentford and Palace having 20+ shots on goal against us and running through at will.

Team selection massively wrong tonight and he needs to learn fast but anything else is unwarranted hysteria
Attacking-wise Ten Hag’s team looked far more dangerous. We created plenty of chances, but we just couldn’t convert the chances. Opponents running through our midfield was very disconcerting though.

It wont happen anymore with a proper structure in place. Not sure what happened this summer but maybe they went all in on supporting ten Hag after him signing an extension to make it work. They have learned their lesson. But they know 3-4-2-1 is the way forward so they have find wingbacks and midfielders to suit the role. So the manager will be involved in discussions but they wont say yes to everyone he wants to sign.
How could they possibly 'know' wing backs is the way forward?

If anything we should approach recruitment very cautiously and make sure that the players we bring in can work for our next manager, as Amorim has looked much worse than it would be fair to expect. It would be classic united to sign 5 specialist wingbacks in August after Amorim comes 17th and then sack him after he lose 5/8 games next season.

Playing devils advocate here... if we keep losing 2 or 3 nil every single week there has to come a point where the manager is called into question.

Put it this way, if come the end of the season we're 15th or lower then I think it might be worth reviewing other options.
But every man, woman and dog said "we know this is going to be painful, we know implementing a new system mid-season will be painful" and here we are, experiencing that pain...and you're all suddenly surprised...and it turns out you're not up for it at all.

I certainly will not even think about questioning Amorim's position until this time next year. Until then, he has a completely free pass from me.

We've given the guy rotten old chicken shit and expected him to make a delicious chicken tikka masala out of it.

But he needs to play his system to see who is able to and who isn't.

He could play it safe, go to 4 at the back and leave the players in the comfort zone they've been in for the last 2 years. And we might eke out some better results and come 7th or 8th. But it's not going to do him any good in the long run as he'll learn nothing about the players he has.

As bad as we are, we won’t finish in the relegation zone because we will get points on the board. Most likely we’ll finish mid-table, with only a slim chance we end up 15th-17th.

I still believe in Amorim and expect to see an improvement in our shape and style before the end of the season. Our luck will change too and we’ll pick up some wins - they might not be convincing ones but they’ll be 3pts regardless.

Deadwood need to be moved on. INEOS have a lot to think about and talk through with Amorim and co. No way did they expect to be in this position - statistically worse than under ETH too, and more records being broken. SJR may well be going apeshit behind the scenes, but he needs to trust in the football people to sort this out.

It’s just stating the obvious that Amorim may not be good enough, everyone knows that. But we do know these players we’ve watched for years aren’t good enough.

Didn’t watch the game today, decided after Bournemouth that gonna skip United games for the foreseeable. But judging by the stats and comments and having seen the previous two games, things have deffo gone awry. There were positives in his first few games but those look to have completely disappeared.

I did think the wing backs would be a big problem. Amad should have been kept there tbh. I also think he needs to just not play Zirkzee. It’s a pointless exercise.

I much prefer him to ETH, but even I can see this is probably gonna end with him losing his job in a few weeks as mad as that seems. But this team is completely broken and I don’t see how it’s going to turn around.

Fecking amazing that people can't see what a shitty position it was to be handed the job in the most intense part of the season with an absolute dogshit team. Maybe he could have adapted to a low block and scrapped a few more points from this period but where would that leave us? We're not getting relegated, the season is a write-off. We will have an easier run in the new year and we'll see the green shoots. Better than having spent a few months trying to scrap out some points with shit on a stick football so we can finish 9th instead of 14th.
