Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Erik was dealing with the worst ever, historical injury crisis that was unprecedented in the history of all sports, ever (he had to go full season without Luke Shaw!), and was also not supported by the board who refused to deliver him FDJ who would have turned us into contender.

Utter nonsense. Why were these injuries in the first? Do you think really FDJ can improve us?

Brentford had 85 touches in our box. 85 touches. Borderline all time Stat
Yeah, this stat is well and truly mindfecking. Feels like a fever dream. That game and Palace right after i think, two of the worst and most curious games i have ever witnessed. Brentford of all teams sets up camp inside our penalty box for about 60 minutes. And how do they have so many without scoring? We are absolutely battered and still have a chance to pick all 3 points for a few minutes at the end. Then we play Palace, have a couple of decent attacks at the start, then we fall back as usual, and Palace, Crystal fecking Palace are playing the ball around like they have a training game against a half arsed L2 team. Shocking preparations for these games.

That was obviously sarcasm. But these excuses were laid out there to support him at the time.

How long did it take for him to firmly implement his style on sporting?
Firmly I would say 8 months taking into account he arrived there and the COVID mess started so he probably had more time to work the team on the tatical aspects but even in 4 months you could see things there already looking better on a colective way even if he didn't had the right profile of players for the way he wanted to play.

Would say probably only during the next pre season and if the things go right on the transfer market I doubt Manchester United won't became a more reliable team for the Premier League.

But even without the pre season and on a more competitive football environment I would say in April the team probably will look better than it is today even with the obvious individual gaps it might have.

Saying the obvious, results do matter until the season ends, he has to survive before next Summer, but if the team doesn't look more consistent at least in April I will be surprised.
Would love to get your thoughts on the video below comparing Amorim's United against his Sporting side
I am not going to talk like a tactical guy because I am not a coach or analyst.

But I would say this. From the games I watched forgetting the names of the players and different contexts I can see a player like Maguire playing on the center of the back 3 becoming a sort of Coates, the wingbacks if he goes with Diallo or Antony they are the sort of his Quenda or Catamo, but then we have to think before those players he had a Porro type of wingback.

On the left I still don't see on Dalot or Macia his Nuno Mendes on the first season or after that Nuno Santos who was a winger adapted into that role, and he was starting to put a guy from Uruguay (Araujo) on that role, but he also on more difficult games where the team needed to defend more could play a more defensive wingback who also played as a CB on the left (Matheus Reis) and I actually think his upgraded version for that will be Mazraoui, who can be the type of guy who will switch between a CB on the right in games where the team needs to be more offensive or playing against stronger teams he can be his right wingback, and then a player like Amad will play upfront on the final third.

A player like Ugarte by the way under him will always play as a 6, and I doubt under him he won't be much better than some think, but I have to say one of Amorim evolution as a coach for me on the last 12 months is that for that role he didn't became fixed on players like Palhinha or Ugarte for that role, he actually went into a more technical midfield with Hjulmand who on that role alongside Morita were much better with the ball and playing on a more vertical way, Ugarte remaining will Casemiro stay for next season?

Or will he go for a type of Hjulmand or even Morita type of midfielder to bring different things on the technical side than a Ugarte or Casemiro type. For the 8 role in the midfield he had on his first season João Mário, who was more a type of guy who was more balanced on his play who didn't take many risks, second complete season went into a Matheus Nunes type of player who was more physical and more vertical but also less suited for control on the midfield, then switched into a guy like Morita who was different from the other 2.

So remaining Mainoo and presuming maybe Eriksen will leave someone will come, oh and Fernandes for now, I don't know next season this season will switch between the 8 role when Mainoo doesn't start, but if Mainoo or Eriksen come into the game after a substitution he already is his sort of Pedro Gonçalves type of player, who can play 2 different roles on the same game, curious to see what exactly the plans for the future are for Diallo, more upfront as a sort of 10 or will he play more as an offensive wingback?

Anyway he will certainly have more than 1 role on the team. Then on the 9 role, think he will workout well with Hojlund, after all he does like the mentality of scandinavian players, I doubt he won't be there next season, regarding Zirkzee he might become more the type of a Paulinho type of player he had before Gyokeres, more a link up player not the obvious goalscorer of the team, but if Fernandes or Mount or Diallo and who knows about Garnacho score goals on a more consistent way if Zirkzee creates for them and doesn't score much it won't be a problem.

Wouldn't write of already even if Hjolund and Zirkzee remain and if Rashford leaves will he go for a Gyokeres type of player to bring different things for the squad? Don't know.

I don't know if Onana will stay, probably more one CB will be needed, with quality and let's see how Yoro develops, for the wingback role certainly something different than Dalot or Malacia and don't know what he thinks regarding Antony, but he does have certain bad things for some players, so I wouldn't be surprised that if Dalot becames your sort of Esgaio, the most hated player on the starting 11 that for some reason he will praise because he works hard even if everybody can see they have limitations on their game, at best they should be backup players and not starters.

Wouldn't write of 2 new midfielders if Casemiro or Eriksen leave, with different profiles than Ugarte or Mainoo and I guess if Fernandes is his Gonçalves he might be the sort of Joker on the team, will depend also on Mount.

Anyway, conversation is long. This from a spanish analyst.

And this guy knows him very well.

Now enough, too much information and second guessing here, but certain aspects can easily be identified on the way he wants to play and different profiles of players. In the end the only 1 coach in the world, maybe 2, can survive bad results, Guardiola or Klopp, but they deserve or deserved that status, he isn't on that level.

You could have at least gone into detail for us.

Very interesting post, thanks. It’s fun watching a new system develop before our eyes, its been far too many years since we’ve really had a coach who seems to know exactly what he’s doing.

What I’m most impressed with is his personality, his obvious enthusiasm and his charisma.

What do you mean by that?
Very short, high level report. Redcaf prides itself on real deep dive, tactical and nuanced discussion. Please see below examples from this thread.

"What's the difference between head coach and a manager? Isit just a different name for the same thing?"
"Is a hot dog a sandwich?"

Well, is it?

if you look at the goal from the moment Amad starts running you'll see he slowsdown and moves sideways to avoid running offside. His football brain is incredible

Not specific to Amorim - this just came across my TL and I didn't know where to post it (don't think we have a "cool Manchester United videos" thread) - so I''m dropping it here:

This kind of win buys him a lot of goodwill with fans everywhere

Love stuff like this

I've always stumbled upon dedicated MUFC fan cafe's and restos/bars when visiting other countries in Africa and Asia over the years.

Really puts in perspective just how massive the club really is globally. That win will definitely give Amorim quite the boost in terms of fan patience

Amads timed run was perfect.
As Sky discussed last night , you can see he goes too early , checks his run and then goes again. Just outstanding from Amad knowing what’s happening around him.

Well we should all stop getting excited. The great Jonathan Wilson is in the Guardian today to pour cold water over our happiness. He describes Licha's pass to Amad as a "long punt."

Apparently, some "some distant spirit has decided that Guardiola must suffer," and that is why United won. That spirit probably entered Amorim when he mouthed Amad to Licha and that spirit probably also played the long punt. The United manager or players had nothing to do with anything.

A main worry of mine is if he's so married to this system, surely it's a matter of time before it gets figured out. In 3-5 years this formation and style will be old news, will he have the nous to evolve it over time?

The main worry should be if this system will work with the team and league first. And whatever comes later.

Just like the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 that Barca use every single year. We’re using one of the hardest systems to figure out. To counter us you basically have to use the same formation. As you seen against city, when you play 4 at the back it leaves us tons of space out wide where our wingbacks have all the time in the world.

No reason it shouldn’t. Conte won the league by changing to a back 3 for Chelsea. Other teams in Europe are successful with it. Inter Milan being one.

System is not the same as formation. Ruben spoke about it before
