Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

If nothing else this lineup shows how much work needs doing with the squad. Amorim’s hands are obviously massively tied with fitness and injuries, but I struggle to see how a midfield of Cas & Eriksen and a front line of Rashford, Bruno & Garnacho press well or keep the ball. Two of which seem to be his core principles. The quicker the likes of Mount, Urgarte, Mainoo, Yoro etc are able to play the sooner I think we’ll see his vision for the team.

We really do a need an proper overhaul in midfield and attack next summer though, no matter what the leaks say about a reduced budget etc etc

maybe Casemiro 3rd CB with Evans and De Ligt? Dalot Eriksen Bruno Mazraoui in Midfield and Garnacho Amad Rashford up front

Could easily be 4-3-3 today.

Interested to see how they line up.

The bench is very strong though with plenty of options, including the players you mention. We will be in a better place to assess the squad when everyone is back as you say (no Martinez or Yoro either)

Well, he said he would 'manipulate' McKenna, he seems to be doing exactly that.

feck knows how we will line up.

It's most likely 3-4-3 still with Dalot playing as RCB, he've played like that in Portugal national team more than once.

RA usually prefer a more defending line back and a more attacking one. The way I'm expecting the team to play is that Diallo will be the attacking one and Mazroui the defending one.

Some accounts on X thinking Dalot and Amad are the wing backs. With Maz has the third centre back.
Who knows.

Pretty sure he did allude to us seeing very similar lineup in his press conference.

You can't polish a turd. Some of these players have no business being here nevermind starting games.

He looks to be a smart man, I am sure with time he will figure out who is good enough and who is not.

Tough job on his hand to come midway through the season and change the whole system with such an unfit/poor squad.

Just in case he was under any illusions about how big a job he has here.

Imagine starting a new job at United with all the expectations and having to field a midfield two of Casemiro and Eriksen.

Not a surprise but the team looks lost with half of the players not suited to their positions.

I think he should for now at least start with Cas and Ugarte in midfield, and then get more expansive players in those positions as confidence builds and the players get more familiar with the set up.

Amad further up is the other obvious thing to do, rather than wingback.

Same old problem. This is a counterattacking team that isn't great in possession. We don't create a lot in possession and are unable to control the flow of the midfield. A change of style won't fix this. We need better midfielders and a physical forward who can hold play if we are going to succeed in Amorim's style

Starting with Eriksen and Evans, and as a result of that, Casemiro too, makes us predictably slow and lethargic. Pretty sure Amorim sees that. Garnacho struggling with that no10 role so far also. Missing Mazraoui out wide very much on top of that.

I like the shape im seeing so far, we look like a team more that can improve over time.

Everyone seems to have a role and therefore a shape.

We are arguably playing with one prime CB though so im not surprised about Mazrouis deflection or Evans misplaced passes under pressure.

Reminded me of the first 5 mins under Rangnick before reverting to type

On a serious note, this is an experiment. You can see players struggling with fitness and also some playing in an unusual position. We will suffer a bit, but it will get better. He will need time

The best counterattacking teams are also good in possession. We are just unbelievably bad on the ball and there's no excuse.

This is still fundamentally an ETH team so not expecting miracles overnight.
Why not?!

Kidding aside, it'll take time but one thing he has to have an immediate impact on is the performance levels, players can't coast along during games, he has the power to send a message and use his selection and subs for that.

‘It’s still a Ten Hag team’ how long are we going to hear that?

Ipswich is there for the taking, manager manage these players.

Play long and they are toast.

That’s true, but I am under no illusions the players will pick up his system and tactics overnight, which will probably result in performances that are more erratic than dominant.

We stopped pressing by the 35th minute or so.

Then when they equalise it’s all energy again. Just your run of the mill match for Manchester United.

When he makes his changes, and what they are, will be an interesting data point for how he sees the squad. I think the signs are decent so far, but the players need more time to adjust their shape and patterns to progress the ball more quickly.

Bloke is still shaking his head. Can't believe how bad some of these are.
