Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Fun fact: Ole and ETH were both sacked because they weren't good enough. Who was better who was worse? Who bloody cares... Time to get the feck over it and move on.
Well said.

EtH is gone, Amorim is here and I want to see what he does.

I hope he will get the backing of not only INEOS but Berrada, Wilcox, and Ashworth should a few players decided to undermine his plans (because they're more hands on). He can't win that kind of battle alone. Even a club legend like Ole had to step down and the end pattern was always the same, some players basically stopped playing for the manager when the going gets really tough. United will never run out of players to play, even if that means relying on less talented options. As long as they work hard and not causing problems within the club, it's much better than relying on very talented ones that are hurting the club from within.

It's all important. He's got to convince the players, Ten Hag's way of speaking didn't suddenly improve with the players compared to what we heard, obviously. It's a good insight.

Agreed. The least that these players should be doing is working hard for the manager. That’s what’s expected from any Manchester United player. Hard work comes before talent. I think we’re in good hands with Amorim as he’s mentioned a few times that his philosophy relies on teamwork. So he’ll cut out the selfishness.

My complaint for years. The foundation of our problems is our inability to keep the ball.

Making the point that he had 3.5% of the vote in the Caf poll.....

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/manager-poll.482677/

McKenna, Tuchel, Alonso, Zidane and Di Zerbi were ahead of him.

I doubt there would be the same level of excitement had we gone for McKenna, Tuchel or Di Zerbi.
Ok, but that’s not so strange given that few of us follow Portuguese football, I think. Now people have seen and heard him the excitement is very understandable.

Thought Ruben came across great. Definitely the most charismatic manager we've had since Jose, but without the pessimism. Charisma makes a massive difference in everything - sales, relationships, politics and football is no different. I think ETH was terrible here tactically, but even if he had shown tactical ability, it was clear from his first interview he was very awkward at communicating, which was always going to make it difficult to communicate ideas effectively and for the players to have confidence in him.

Going more into the actual content of the interviews, I was very happy to hear Amorim identify us keeping the ball as an important area to improve. This was something that I was a bit unsure about with Ruben, as his style did always seem quite direct, and I felt, just like Amorim said, that us giving away the ball so quickly after winning it was a massive problem for us. He's completely correct that keeping the ball better means we will be able to press more efficiently and higher up the pitch. Glad to hear that he's data-focused and emphasised that the players need to improve their fitness based on actual evidence.

Very excited for Sunday and the rest of the season. Not expecting top 4 because I don't think it's realistic (if he manages it amazing), but just seeing progress and a consistent change in how we play will be enough for me this season. Winning the Europa League would be ideal to get us into CL too.

I feel the same, I respect what he says but I only care about the performances and results on the pitch, everything else is beside the point.
Yes, but it is a good sign that he addresses the right issues and seems to know how to deal with them. He comes across as a both intelligent and sympathetic person which is better than the opposite. If he’d come in and said that he doesn’t see any reason to change anything that would’ve been worse, right? I think it’s weird to claim that what he says doesn’t matter - when we haven’t played a game under him yet his statements are pretty much all we’ve got. And so far they point in the right direction.

You are not wrong, and I do respect and even appreciate everything he said so far, but I'm just being patient here, my heart tells me he'll get us playing well and winning, but my mind is telling me to wait and see.

He says all the right things, speaks well and is interesting to listen to in that interview with Neville. Comes across as intelligent and well grounded

Can't help feel like we've been there before though when we've appointed a new manager. Its easy to talk and its kind of easy to WANT to do the right things. A lot of us here could say or think the same things he says in that interview.

When ETH took over I remember thinking similar that he spoke a lot of sense, and for a time it was reflected in the changes we saw in the performances. Where he and other managers have started to fall down is convincing the players to carry on doing the right things after a period of time. Maybe that was partly to do with the structure at the club being wrong and not allowing them to manage the standards properly, but we don't really know. In ETH's case I think it was also to do with his ideas being flawed and him refusing to adapt them, but we don't know how Almorim will respond if the same thing happens yet. In the PL even if somethig is working, opponents scout and eventually someone finds a weakness with it and you have to then respond.

Only thing that will prove anything one way or another is time, but I do like that he's not afraid to talk or show a bit of charisma. The season was just going to be a long hard slog under ETH because we'd gone way past the point of no return. So at the very least some fresh ideas and a fresh start make it more interesting again.

It was a joke because someone said Amorim spoke spanish fluently.
Aren't the Spanish and Portugese languages quite similar to speak? Wouldn't be hard to be fluent in a language that's closely related to your native language

This has been a long time problem for us. Even with new groups of players. So refreshing to hear him talking about it. The only reason some teams manage to press like crazy in a whole game is because they hold on to the ball. The running back and forth between goal posts are not doable when you drop possession time after time like we do.

That's a bit of a misconception. I understand spanish but it's not easy to learn. I mean if I worked hard to learn probably. I'm more fluent in English and German than Spanish.

Oh I just watched his interview with Gary. He was brilliant!

I loved all his answers. I had to stop myself from getting carried away. Great communicator, and you just like him as a person.

Loved he called Keane crazy
And speaking about horses with Sir Alex - which he knows nothing about

Genuinely, Google told me they're similar haha. Is Spanish not taught in Portuguese schools with them being neighbouring countries?

It's okay. Most people think that. Spanish very rarely is taught in schools. English, then French and German are prevalent. In my school time Spanish wasn't even a curricular option. Even in University there wasn't many spanish studies options. You had plenty of choices regarding English, French and German though. Perhaps near the Spanish border there are more options. The most used word when I speak to Spanish people is "que?" which is basically "what?"

Might be my problem because I have minimum interest regarding Spain and Spanish. I do like Galicia and the Basque country though.

People complain that he loses the ball too easily but that’s how ETH wanted him to play.
To some extent, but Bruno has given the ball away easily throughout his entire career. He did it under Ole as well, and by all reports the reason we didn't sign him 6 months earlier than we did was because the scouts were dubious about how often he gave away possession.

Key takeays for me.
  • Comments on Case and Rashford are clear. He didn't like the fact they went away but can't blame them. The club did not set standards and give clear instructions. Basically insinuated the culture is poor.
  • Said it's clear from the first time he saw the players that we have to be better on the ball. Player's aren't inherently unfit but can't cope with the demands of high intensity press, with hou often we lose the ball. I also feel he has his work cut out with some of our attackers who leave the rest of the team out to dry.

I guess some Mount haters will change their minds soon.

If he starts performing well, then said people would be justified in changing their minds. That’s what you’re supposed to do when provided new information/data points.

As of now, Mount has been a calamitous signing, but that doesn’t mean it has to remain like that.

I like what he has said about Roy Keane. He wants leaders on the pitch.
About losing the ball as soon as we have won it back, which has been a characteristic about our play for far too long.
About being better athletes.

I also think he has an attitude and seems pretty smart.

But. And it is a massive But.
The only thing that really counts is results. I would be happy for performance to take a bit of time. But winning is the number 1 starting tomorrow.

Some people are saying that Mount is a shit player. Being unable to play because of injury is not the same as being a bad player.

Watching him in interviews has inspired me.

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us,
and United will be number one.

Sorry about that. I'm going to go and have a lie down now.

Will be interesting to see where Mount plays in the system, CM or 10 behind the striker. I’d imagine the latter.
He's clearly a really good fit for the two positions behind the striker, if we line up like Sporting has been doing.
