Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

It's right the budget is restricted. We can't be signing a brand new squad every two or three years. He's going to have to work with what he has, utilise some of the young players, be expected to raise money to fund additional purchases and stick with one or two key signings each year. I think honestly that's preferable to what was going on before.

From what Sporting fans have said, he started off playing fullbacks in those positions (albeit being played very offensively). Then after a year or two he changed one of them to being a winger, and later changed the other to a winger as well.

So it could go either way. He may feel he needs fullbacks there at first to keep us somewhat solid while the team gets used to what needs to be done, and then eventually change one (or both) to a winger so as to overload the attack. Or it may have been a case that he was experimenting with the different tactics, and he's now set on having wingers there straight away. None of us will know until we see his first few games (indeed it wouldn't surprise me if he's not set on either yet and he'll be experimenting to see which works best with us).

Things changed and evolved from season to season but it also had to do with Sporting budget limitations. It's pretty hard and expensive finding a fullback that knows to attack/defend and has the stamina to do so.
Sporting academy has a long history of wingers so its easier to develop and teach a winger (Geny Catamo, Quenda...) on how to defend, since they already had the thing you cant exactly teach which is flair, dribbling, etc.

Shame we've put together such a shite squad then. He'll fail if he's not allowed to bring several players in.

Good decision and actually what I thought we should be doing. If he can't get us to atleast challenging for the top 4 this season with the current squad then he's another failed coach anyways.

So Erik spunks £600 million on Eredivisie rejects, leaves with a £15 million payoff and Ruben has to come in and clear the mess without as much as a pot to piss in. Great stuff.

Pretty much. Makes not sacking him in May look like even more of a joke.

Antony has been the only one who's been an unequivocal disaster. Rest all have been decent to good. It's up to Amorim to get consistent good performances out of them.

If he's as highly rated as he is, then he should be able to do exactly that and with those improved performances he will be able to sell them for good money to get players he wishes.

Depends what a restricted budget amounts to. 1 or 2 big signings and a couple of squad fillers shouldn't be an issue. I'd say there's 3 glaring holes in the squad at present in a 343 and hopefully we have players that can grow and make at least 2 of those positions their own.

CM we hope Mainoo is the real deal and can adapt to Amorim
ST hopefully Hojlund benefits from Amorims coaching as much as Gyokeres.
LWB is looking a challenge, but there is potential in Amass

We don't really need to gut the squad. His job is to get the best out of the current group, and then in the summer we can add 2 or 3 quality players. I'm sure he'll be backed if he wants to add a couple of players here and there.

I hope he has given every player the hair dryer the minute they walked in.

Let them know who the big boss is now Big Ruby Ammo

Have we had a year without a "United are skint and aren't going to spend any money" story?

Back to this.. How many times has this been discussed?

1. Amorim did not want to leave in the summer.
2. We did not have our board in the summer.

So if we sacked him in the summer, it still would have cost us 15m, it was widely reported.

Finally, if we did sack him, it would have been Tuchel or Di Zerbi and in my opinion, I am glad he wasn't sacked then as those 2 managers were not what I wanted for many reasons.

I hope he doesn't back down on his system and formation. We never saw ten Hag's Ajax system here, like he didn't try.

Even if we have poor results stay with the system until it clicks, of it doesn't change players or whatever but that's the reason you were brought here. By all the reports his football is exciting and successful, better gamble for it to eventually click for us than revert to the same old counterattacking basic football we've played since Mourinho.

He has come out in his interview and said from game 1 you will see a style / system.

So I am hoping that we see his way of playing rather than him overly adapting just to get results, which is what was the downfall for Ten Hag.

He obviously needs easy wins at the start, that will help players / fans believe in his style of play. Ten Hag started really badly, showed up multiple flaws in his game. Everytime we went a goal down to our rivals in the first 20 mins, the game would end 3 plus goals.

Its only games we scored first really we won under Ten Hag.

Amorim needs to make sure our mentality is strong.

“Just go out and have fun and express yourselve lads”

If that’s really where we are at then Amorim is as helpless and doomed as every other manager since SAF.

That isn't the basics? It's about keeping a proper shape, tracking runners, being careful with the ball.

Under ETH there were huge gaps everywhere and it made the team easy to play against.

If people think Amorim is going to have this squad of players looking great in a 3-5-2 in the space of a week, you're in for a nasty shock...

I dont see why we cannot look more than competent ? I have seen Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, Villa, Brighton all looking good within weeks of their new manager joining.

This excuse as fans that football requires x years to build a system.. its completely false.

Most managers who do well, get the team playing in the style / system almost within few weeks.

I recall Klopp, it was the same, instant impact. Poch at Spurs was the same, instant impact.

Whereas on the other hand, what manager has not had an instant impact and succeeded?

Not too worried tbh. Squad does indeed have a lot of potential.
Garnacho, Amad, Mainoo, Ugarte, Yoro, Rasmus, De Ligt, Dalot, Mazraoui.

You could only argue a top striker could be brought in to share the load with Rasmus, but considering how Amorim coached Goykores to be so prolific - you'd expect the same with Rasmus given their attributes are pretty similar.

Mount was signed for big money as a first choice attacking mid, and has in 1,5 season 2 goalcontributions all comps.
He adds some energy to our pressing up top but that is basically it. He most definitely belongs in the disaster category.

How many games/minutes has he played?

Absolutely. We have a number of very talented young player’s in both the first team squad and the under 23s/18s.

Its correct we need to get more from what we have and supplement that with the odd signing (and direct signing) rather than start from scratch.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is likely a transfer muppet.

Wait, people here thought he wouldn’t be tasked with making our players better and shocked to hear the annual skint notice?

I refuse to believe that people would think this

Untapped potential.

About as untapped as joining the California goldrush a hundred years or so later.
Some of you are such glass half empty people.

There is absolutely untapped potential in the squad, especially from players just signed and those who have underperformed. Amorim is undoubtedly a better manager than ten Hag having done it in a more competitive league, and has the charisma to actually get players running through walls for him. It really could just be a case of these players being instructed poorly and we could see some playing so much better in a system where everyone knows their roles. Some might not but to just tar them all with the same brush is reductive.

It's the same as those saying ETH spunked 600m down the drain. Does this figure include Ugarte? Yoro? De Ligt? Martinez? It's just such a pointless catch-all way of looking at things.

Has been plagued with injuries. Not due to his quality as a player. If he stays fits(big if), he can easily contribute more. He has shown it previously in this very league.

Did we overpay? Yes, paying 55m for a guy with 1 year left on his deal is clear overpaying but I don't think anyone thought he'd be injured as much as he has.

Nobody ever thought Mount was signed as our first choice attacking midfielder as that would be Bruno.
