I posted recently the question of which United keeper has kept the most clean sheets for United, conceded most goals etc. I haven't found the answers yet, but I was just watching MUTV and they said that Roy is yet to lose a game with us. Is this true?? A good point was also made, that Roy is very vocal during games, organising his defence. If youth does well, shouldn't we give them a chance?

I don't think Roy's lost a match indeed, but how many of the big one's has he played? Has he played Liverpool? Arsenal? Chelsea? Leeds? Newcastle? Champions League except a meaningless match at Lille?

His most difficult one's were probably at Villa in the league and cup.

If it's some sort of a comparizon with Fabien, it's not very fair.

Maybe its not fair but maybe it does show the potential in Roy! Another season and he might just be ready to take over?

How about four, as Barthez has a deal until 2006 :)

It's all about breaks... If Barthez gets injured at a bad time and Carroll actually gets big games and done well, he could find himself as first choice earlier than he might have thought.

The first games will be crucial for Fab this year...I don't think Ferguson will allow him to have another bad period like he had last year. Unfortunately he's already injured...Not the better way to start the season. :(

If Barthez wants to keep ahead these next 4 years, maybe he should start doing what Roy does, making sure we don't lose the games he plays in. If he does that, nobody will make unfair comparisons.

I agree I think Roy will defintily be The Keeper of our future. I'd Give Fab a couple more seasons though. I think Fab we be a big part of our return to the top this season. But like it's been said, if he doesn't preform, Roy can fill the posts with out giving me a heart-attack.

OK here's the games he played
Aston Villa 1-1 Man Utd
Sunderland 1-3 Man Utd
Lille 1-1 Man Utd
Arsenal 4-0 Man Utd (worthington cup)
Man Utd 5-0 Derby (sub after 83mins)
Middlesbro 0-1 Man Utd
Aston Villa 2-3 Man Utd (FA Cup)
Charlton 0-2 Man Utd
Leicester 0-1 Man Utd
Ipswich 0-1 Man Utd

Conceded 9 out of 10 games or 90% (with Arsenal game being almost half of those) and keeping 5 clean sheets or 50% (though the derby game was mostly Barthez).

Barthez' stats are:
FA Community Shield Liverpool 2-1 Man Utd
Man Utd 3-2 Fulham
Blackburn 2-2 Man Utd
Man Utd 4-1 Everton
Newcastle 4-3 Man Utd
Man Utd 1-0 Lille
Man Utd 4-0 Ipswich
Deportivo 2-1 Man Utd
Tottenham 3-5 Man Utd
Olympiakos 0-2 Man Utd
Man Utd 2-3 Deportivo
Man Utd 1-2 Bolton
Man Utd 3-0 Olympiakos
Man Utd 1-1 Leeds
Liverpool 3-1 Man Utd
Man Utd 2-0 Leicester
B. Munich 1-1 Man Utd
Arsenal 3-1 Man Utd
Man Utd 0-3 Chelsea
Man Utd 3-0 Boavista
Man Utd 0-1 West Ham
Man Utd 5-0 Derby
Man Utd 6-1 Southampton
Everton 0-2 Man Utd
Fulham 2-3 Man Utd
Man Utd 3-1 Newcastle
Southampton 1-3 Man Utd
Man Utd 2-1 Blackburn
Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool
Middlesbro 2-0 Man Utd (FA Cup)
Bolton 0-4 Man Utd
Man Utd 4-1 Sunderland
Nantes 1-1 Man Utd
Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa
Man Utd 5-1 Nantes
Derby 2-2 Man Utd
Man Utd 4-0 Tottenham
Man Utd 0-0 B. Munich
West Ham 3-5 Man Utd
Boavista 0-3 Man Utd
Man Utd 0-1 Middlesbro
Leeds 3-4 Man Utd
Deportivo 0-2 Man Utd
Man Utd 3-2 Deportivo
Chelsea 0-3 Man Utd
Man Utd 2-2 B. Leverkusen
B. Leverkusen 1-1 Man Utd
Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal
Man Utd 0-0 Charlton

Conceded 58 out of 50 games or 116% (with Arsenal game being almost half of those) and keeping 16 clean sheets or 32% (though the derby game was mostly Barthez).

Amir, you are right that Carroll was not really tested in big matches, however his record was better than Barthez's as I suspected, and he should get a chance to prove himself this season.

He has still to win in a really big game, and at least Fab has done that.

Anyway, I have the impression that if even Barthez lost his place, it would be in favour of another keeper, and that Carroll would stay the number two. Even last year, when Fab was having a nightmare on the pitch, Ferguson didn't called him.

Still I hope Fab will show his real worth this year, like he did during his first year for United.

Roy will definately get his chances, but hopefully Barthez, who will surely start the season as number 1, will not give him any chances of stealing his place in the first team, by showing blinding form! :D

OK but Barthez statistics were much better in 2000-2001, and those of last year are by far the worst of his whole career...Anyway, don't worry, even if I know that Ferguson rates him and believes in his qualities, I don't think he will allow him to have another bad year.

well one things for sure..if Barthez gets injured or dropped then at least we know we have a steady, reliable number 2.

Is Parma stronger than Ajax ? I'm afraid Carroll hadn't faced any problem in that match.

I would still choose Barthez for all big matches if I were Alex.

I seem to have said this a lot in the past 24 hours, but for me, Roy's got a great chance this season.

We seem more comfortable and confident at the back with him around, and the statistics don't lie. Although, he has only played a hand-ful in comparison to Fab.

If Barthez cocks up, I wouldn't be suprised to see Roy become number one.

We seem more comfortable and confident at the back with him around,

I was a goalie all through school and my young adult life. One thing that was fundamental to being a trusted goalie was your gob, all defenders want to know that you are running things behind them, they want to know right away whether it's 'goalies ball' or 'away'.

If Fab is not vocal back there, and whether he is or isn't, I don't know, but, if he isn't then the defenders are immediately in a less confident mind set. Of course, these are professional footballers and they shouldn't rely on the goalie taking charge but it's a given that, as a defender, you want to know what's going on around you and the goalie is usually in the best position to make that call.

Carroll looked fine in Parma match. But he still need some more test against series opponents in series matches. Of course I really hope he can step up a gear this season and challenge Barthez for his place. To be honest, in the case of goalie, I'd prefer someone who is stable and error-free rather than someone who can make some amazing saves one day, but then make some very silly error on another day.

As observed in the world football for 6 years, I can only conclude that Barthez is a first class goalkeeper. However, within the so call first class, there're still lots of divisions, there're top first class, medium first class and bottom first class.

Now let's investigate Barthez goalkeeping ability bits by bits. His handling skill is one of the best in the world, and can compare with Schmeichel of course. However, his ability to save or hold the balls from the crossing or set pieces are awulful, more or less the same as Bosnich I think, maybe is the fact of his height......

Moreover, because of his height, he sometimes conceded goals that will not concede by fellows like Van der Gouw and Schmeichel. The first goal concede against West Ham in Upton Park to Lomas last season was one of the example.

Thirdly, Barthez's position is bad as well. Still remember the goal conceded against Arsenal two seasons ago in Highbury?

However, his reflex is perfect, maybe with his height, he gets easier to jump and save low balls, I think as same as Serini of Ipswich.

Furthermore, his set piece is quite good, and can kick the ball to the opposite penalty box, and can create chances for teammates.

To round up, he should be a first class goalkeeper now, but however, he still can't compare with Schmeichel and even Van der Gouw. And with his inconsistency and tricky things around the ball, United should better buy a new goalkeeper. But first please try Roy Carroll, he has great talent although he still lacks of experience in top flight. And hopefully Steele, just signed from Petersbrough this season, can become a good prospect for the future.

DISAGREE !!! Barthez's the best! Last seasons, he flunked mostly because of the defensive errors.

I don't think Barthez is the same player we signed from Monaco in all truth. Yes, he is still one of the top keepers in the Premiership. But, too many mistakes have battered his reputation and his confidence. Don't get me wrong, I think Barthez is great, he's a real character and must be great to have around. I just think, this season it is very important that he shows his worth, because Carroll is on his toes and ready to step in. Barthez needs to re-establish himself as one of the world's best, and the only way to do that is to improve his game.

It's tiring to read always the same critics. Barthez has just returned from holidays, he will improve. To say Van Der Gouw was better than Fab is laughable. Gregory Coupet, Lyon's keeper, was saying recently that people in England and generally from the North of Europe were obsessed by the height of keepers. To jump high is more important than to be tall. The Mexican keeper is ten cm smaller than Fab...Whenever I see a tall keeper who can't reach a high ball I say to myself : If it was Fab, people would again say "he's to small". This is a critic I've never heard in France, and I've never heard too that he had problems of communication with his defenders...

As for his errors, the question should be "Why did he make so many last year, and not before ?" So there must be a reason. I'm not going to explain things again, I've already written about that.

This keeper has won major titles, and contrary to what some people think he has always made decisive saves to help his team to win. He has proved recently, against Uruguay, that he has not lost his qualities. He's a proud man, he surely wants to prove to his manager and the United fans that he's still a great keeper.
