i think he's going to stay number one for some time to come. only going to get better.

I hope he wins the Masters after last year's terrible final round. Really impressed by how he talks and handles himself despite achieving so much at a young age - he can dominate golf if he continues to improve as he has done.

I wonder if he could beat Wozniacki at tennis?

He can lose the OWR #1 as soon as he got it if Lee Westwood or Luke Donald win this weekend. Whether or not he has it officially, he's got to be the top player in the world right now. If he hadn't collapsed at Augusta, the hype around him would be unreal right now.

McIlroy and Wozniacki take courtship to new level as world's top golfer helps out against Sharapova

The Wozzilroy roadshow touched down in New York on Monday night as the world's No 1 golfer tried a whole different ball game.

Rory McIlroy hit the summit of the global rankings at the weekend and celebrated by showing off his tennis skills in front of thousands at Madison Square Garden.

McIlroy was watching girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki take on Maria Sharapova in an exhibition match in when the Danish star invited her man on court.

The 22-year-old Northern Irishman was not exactly dressed for the occasion in jeans and a jumper but he displayed a mean one-handed backhand and took a point when Sharapova played his lob wide.
Modest McIlroy said: 'I’ve won a few off Caroline before.'
He later tweeted: 'Never thought I'd play tennis at Madison Square Garden! Had a great time watching Caroline and Maria out there! I even won a point.'

The US Open champion could not prevent Wozniacki, a former world No 1 herself, crashing 6-3, 6-4 to her Russian opponent. Wozniacki, now the fourth ranked player in the world, said on Twitter: 'Had great fun playing the exhibition with Sharapova in Madison Square Garden. Even got Rory on court and win a point Ha ha.' McIlroy reached the top spot with his victory at the Honda Classic on Sunday night. He signed autographs and posed for photos in New York and will head for the Blue Monster at Doral in Miami this week for the second World Golf Championship of the season. He said: 'It’s nice to take a little break from golf.'

Wozniacki's next tournament is in Indian Wells and the pair have been spending time together when their busy schedules offer them the opportunity.
But when asked if she sent McIlroy flowers after his win at the Honda, Wozniacki said: 'Well, I don’t want his head to become too big, so, um, no.'

Lost number 1 spot again to Donald, got to say I like Rory but prefer to see Luke in that position, sure it won't be long untill Rory gets it back though.

I'm not an avid follower of golf but he's potentially in a different class to Donald or Westwood, IMHO. If he keeps his head down and doesn't get caught up in the celebrity bullshit, he'll win quite a few big pots.

he seems to be though doesn't he. This crap with the tennis, the row on twitter last year, the bust up with his agent. It seems like Rory's head is starting to be turned by the fame game. I hope I'm wrong because I am a huge fan.

He's not quite ready to take over the world yet, but I think he'll be there or thereabouts for many years to come.

Rory McIlroy has given the clearest indication yet that he will opt to represent Great Britain at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Golf will make it's first appearance as an Olympic sport since 1904 in Rio and there has been much speculation on which team the current world number one will play - should he qualify.

McIlroy is eligible to represent both Ireland and Great Britain at the Olympics and while he has played for Ireland in World Cups, under the auspices of the 32-county Golf Union of Ireland, it appears he will opt for Great Britain in Rio.

"What makes it such an awful position to be in is I have grown up my whole life playing for Ireland under the Golfing Union of Ireland umbrella," McIlroy told the Daily Mail.

"But the fact is, I’ve always felt more British than Irish. Maybe it was the way I was brought up, I don’t know, but I have always felt more of a connection with the UK than with Ireland.

"And so I have to weigh that up against the fact that I’ve always played for Ireland and so it is tough.

"Whatever I do, I know my decision is going to upset some people but I just hope the vast majority will understand," he added.

The top 15 golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking will qualify automatically for the Rio Olympics, regardless of which country they come from.

Then, 45 more players will be selected based on their world ranking, but only if their country does not already have two players competing in the tournament.

I had always assumed he viewed himself as a Brit but played for us due to them playing as the island of Ireland rather than the Republic. Fair enough, really.

Couldnt give a shit about that personally.

His win last night was one of his most impressive to date. Very Tiger like actually.

He wasnt at the height of his powers all weekend but still managed to defeat a who's who of the best golfers out there currently. Bit of a changing of the guard feeling to it.

I couldn't care less who he declared for for the Olympics. As far as I am aware, he is a protestant anyway so I fully expected him to declare for the Brits.

As far as last night's win goes, it was fantastic. As Decotron said, he wasn't near his best but still seemed to win easily.

I honestly believe he will go on to win more majors than Woods, once he keeps his head right.

Nope the odd thing about it, is that he is in fact catholic

I agree, I just mean it is an unusual choice for a person who grew up catholic. Doesnt bother me at all though

He was brilliant yesterday- very composed and classy back to back wins.

Whatever Rory does - its his decision.

From a political basis and in my own opinion its saddening to see a Northern Catholic align himself with Great Britain - even more so with his families catholic background.

Really? I didn't know that.

His decision anyway and it's one I'd have absolutely no problem with.

grandfather's brother killed by UVF for living in a protestant estate, Mum worked in Catholic school, Uncle represented Armagh in gaelic.

Fair play Rory whatever you decide

can't stand these pricks who say the Associations 'steal' players

Its a personal decision and he has the right to self determination

It is odd, especially with him being catholic.

I am English and don't feel myself to be British as such, even though my Granddad was from Londonderry. I very much feel like an Englishman and kind of expect everyone from the home nations to feel aligned like me. I don't mind seeing the other home nations do well at sport and such like though.

I think that this is a commercial decision driven by his fiscal interests.

well there is, but for the Olympics you represent either Ireland or GB

Overnight has said that its all moot as he hasnt made up his mind yet as its 4 years away

Wouldn't say that's necessarily true. I know for one I feel British but not too bothered about England even though I was born and raised here.

Looks like he's sticking with the green side of things for the moment. Still couldnt give a feck either way.

Massive weekend for him, Top 30 golfers in the world all together on a great course and he has chance of €8million bonus if he wins in Atlanta

he hasnt made up his mind yet; he has basically said that people's reactions to the decision have caused him to rethink what he may do

I'd imagine that he is only saying he is rethinking it to stop getting any abuse or stick that he is getting. If I had to guess, he'll still make the same decision.

His choice anyway, and I'll be supporting him either way.

Cheeky Devil McIlroy brings a touch of red to the greens as he practises in Miami
By Phil Gradwell

Rory McIlroy brought a splash of red to the greens in Miami as he practised on his own while most of the world's best players were competing 200 miles north.

Manchester United fan McIlroy's golf bag was adorned with the club's badge and he certainly got into the swing of things during this round.

The United supporter has this week abided by the mantra of his fellow Red Devils and has done 'what he wants' by missing the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, causing a right hoo-ha in the process.

Palmer said: 'I had a few brief conversations with Rory last year and thought he was going to play but obviously I was wrong.'

'What his reasoning is I don’t know but I am not going to worry about it.'

Justin Rose and Bill Haas share the lead at the halfway point at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, with Tiger Woods - who has recently gone public over his relationship with skier Lindsey Vonn - a further four shots back.

McIlroy, however, is sticking to the schedule he believes will give him his best chance of winning the Masters next month.

And if he takes inspiration from serial title winners United, the chances are he's got the Green Jacket in the bag...
