So Rooney has recently said that 4 players from the United team of 2008 would get into this current City team.
Scholes, Vidic, Rio & Himself.
Omitting one obvious name. Is he speaking facts or having a little dig at Ronaldo over the jealous and ugly comments?

I think by 08 Scholes was too old, Rooney by 08 had not developed into a player who European coaches wanted. Rio & Vidic would probably get in, Ronaldo over Halaand similar goals but CR7 at that time offered much more, I also think Tevez would have had a chance.

Definite dig at Ronaldo.

Obviously having a dig I think. Let’s be honest 08 Ronaldo walks into most teams, if not every team.

Ronaldo didn't play centre forward then he was left wing, you'd surely have him in the team, also evra probably, he was incredible at left back.

Pep loved Scholes and Rooney 08 was a Ridiculous player.
Can’t see why Evra wouldn’t get in.

Of course Ronnaldo would make the team.

As would Evra. And probably Van Der Sar.

Ronaldo left for RM in 2009, he would have gone in 2008 if not for SAF, to say European coaches didn't want him in 2008 is ridiculous

Scholes in 2008 was one of the best playmakers in the world. Of course he would get in ahead of Gundogan.

Context? Hard to say what the intention was with out. Was it a throwaway response to a quick fire question, or a detailed response? Did he give reasoning for leaving Ronaldo out, or could it be possible he forgot Ronaldo or misconstrued the time period? Was he picking a team with freedom of selection, or was he given a choice of Haaland (or himself) or Ronaldo? Was it simply who he thought were the best players, or was he considering how the players would fare under Guardiola.

Rooney is definitely on the road to becoming Gary Neville Mach 2

In his column with the Telegraph, Rooney explained his list and admitted the 2007/08 United team would be slightly inferior to City.

"Could the 2008 United team have competed with City? Head-to-head, we’d have had a good chance but over a 38-game season they would have had the edge," Rooney wrote. "I think we’d have been similar to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

"We'd be able to beat them in one-off games but usually just a bit behind them in the final league table. There were players in our team who would have got into this City side. Paul Scholes would have been perfect, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic too.

"I believe I would have fitted into it as well — and I would have loved to play with Kevin De Bruyne and [Erling] Haaland."

Ronaldo won the Balon D’Or that season

No chance! His big renaissance as a deep-lying playmaker really took off the season before. And in 08 he was the one who got us into the final with that stunning long shot. He was orchestrating with ease up till his first retirement in 11, IMO.

It's just some handbags with Ronaldo.

VDS would have a good shout and Evra and Ronaldo would definitely be in there too. Carrick, Park and Tevez would be in squad.

These X players get into Y team discussions are always a bit silly. Sure we might say 8 of the 11 should get in but what really matters is which of the players would City be willing to drop to fit into their system.

If we consider the last point it's really just Rio, Scholes and Ronaldo. Evra would have got in if Pep was playing conventional LBs. Rooney might get in just because he was such a good all-rounder but I'm not sure where he would fit.

If you asked us the question of who we'd add to our 07-08 team it would be be only Haaland and KDB.

The OP looks daft if you actually read the quote. He's clearly talking about style of play and he's not giving an exhaustive list who would or wouldn't get in, just listing a few obvious examples.

VDS
Stones - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Rodri - Scholes
Ronaldo - KdB - Rooney
Haaland

That’d be the team.

It obviously is a dig on Ronaldo. Who obviously makes that team and is the best player in that team.

However, Rooney probably does not make that team. A very close call between him and De Bruyne (Haaland is obviously a better CF).

If we’re being honest, 08 Ronaldo makes it into virtually every team in history, that’s why he’s one of the greatest ever.

Both players definitely have a very high opinion of themselves and think they were better than they actually were (but tbf to Rooney he was at least 10 times better and more talented than Neville).

Ronaldo was definitely a better player than Rooney already in 2007/08.
But Ronaldo and Haaland together probably would be overkill so maybe Rooney backs himself to play together with Haaland over Ronaldo.

Same way despite Haaland being individually better than Rooney or Tevez, I wouldn’t take him ahead of either in the 2007/08 team. Our front 3 plus midfield had a great chemistry so why change it?
KdB the only player I would take and even then the question is ahead of who?

Same with City, they could take those 2007/08 players, but ahead of who?

Rooney would play on the left

I know it would be. To think anyone would say that would also be ridiculous

We’re forgetting how diverse Ronaldo was from 23-29. All types of goals, played across the front 3, had the skills and winger element, I think Pep would take him over over Halaand. But I agree you can’t have both in the team.

VDS
Stones - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Rodri - Scholes
Ronaldo - KdB - Rooney
Haaland

That’d be the team.

That's what I imagined. The only debatable parts would be Walker for Stones and Peps preference for goalies who can't save.

I'd probably agree with that, but could Stones do a pinpoint left footed cross onto Ronaldo's head in the CL final like Wes Brown did?

Ronaldo really doesn't suit Guardiola's style. Scholes defo could play, he would be a good fit, Rio and vidic are simply better than what City have, but maybe vidic isn't good enough on the ball. I have mixed feelings about if rooney would fit his style.

Rooney joined United at what? 18? and everyone would have wanted him even back then.

Given we are talking about Pep and Ronaldo I don't think he's far off either. I can't see Pep having the patience SAF did.

Pique and Rio would be first choice. Rooney and Ronaldo would play too. That’s about it. They have a different style.

Just something to have a little laugh about and discuss the two teams.

Pep is very strict about player positioning. I remember Henry once saying Pep got angry after he scored because he run into the wrong area. I think Rooney would have made Pep start growing hair just so he can go grey
