No not that Ronaldo...

Acording to some press reports United are preparing a second bid for Quaresma (19) and Cristiano Ronaldo (18). United had talked of an offer last season but Sporting Lisbon wanted to keep the players although since the official deal between the clubs it is now possible that a summer move could be sorted out.

I have heard a lot of reports about Quaresma and know he has been called up to train with the full Portugal team but does anybody know much about Ronaldo? aparently there is a 16 million (presumably euro) buy out clause in his contract but United would hope to sign him for less than that due to the formal link between the 2 clubs.

Has anybody seen him play?... Is he any good?

UEFA site report on his performance in the european U17 championship of 2002:

Exquisite skill
Another player to make his presence felt in Denmark was Portuguese playmaker Cristiano Ronaldo, with his blend of exquisite skill and feisty temperament. The Sporting Clube de Portugal forward, given a free role by U17 coach Barceló Silveira Ramos, was sent off in his country's opener against France, sat out the game against Switzerland through suspension and was arguably the man of the match in the 2-1 win against Ukraine.

He made a sensational start to his first-team club career, scoring twice in a 3-0 victory over Moreirense FC - his first a superb solo effort that saw his beat three defenders. He endeared himself further to the Sporting fans with a late winner in the 2-1 victory over rivals Boavista FC. The young attacker, still only 17, also starred in his club's ill-fated UEFA Cup campaign, gaining valuable experience in the process. The Funchal-born forward is now one of the hottest properties in Europe and is already rumpured to have made a big impression on Manchester United FC and Internazionale FC.

saw him play for lisbon once, he plays upfront as a striker, not sure but think hes left footed. he would be a good signing, during the match he tore the denfence apart quite often and scored
Ronaldo = execellent sigining for the furture ;) ;) ;)

these two stand out as real possibles for the close season.
maybe our link with sporting could see a "realistic" fee being paid for these two. that bearing in mind what other clubs try to shaft us with could see saf turn to sporting for a deal.
maybe:

Queresma
Ronaldo
Escude
Cisse

would give us what we need for next season and beyond :)

We'll see how real the partnership we have with sporting is, when it comes down to signing players from them, that will be the test- judging by the persistance of the Quaresma and Ronaldo rumours there seems to be firm interest.
Also maybe we will bring young players from Brazil through sporting, since they share the language and are respected, it might be a more attractive transition for young brazillians.

The problem of bringing young talent from south america to England is usually work permits... for example Robino and D'Allasandro would fail to get a work permit (unless they could "magic" up a gran from europe)... by the time players have played enough international games they obviousley cost far more... and to keep the work permit they must play a certain % of games (difficult if they are a young up and coming player)... Would it be easier to bring take players to portugal as if a work permit is turned down an appeal would be lodged not with UEFA but with the Portugese FA and the work permit would be issued under different rules to a UK work permit??? If this is the case how long before other clubs start complaining.

I don't know the laws in the various countries, but young brazilians go to Holland and Germany for instance and play in their youth system for a few years before breaking into the first team.

If the young south americans go to sporting first then after a few years wouldn't they be able to get a portugese passport allowing them to sign for united?

The immigration laws vary among EU countries, do the Portugese get their share of south americans, the dutch and germans don't seem to have a problem bringing south american talent?
Plenty of argies have EU ancestry(german and italian), but they are tightening up on the passports because so many argies are bailing out of there such is the strife at present.
