Following the somewhat muted unveiling of Grand Theft Auto IV's official packaging, game developer Rockstar Games has released the third official trailer for their long-awaited blockbuster. For most games that's hardly newsworthy, but then again, most games aren't as massive, controversial and, well, newsworthy as GTA IV.

Clocking in at a hefty two minutes, it's nearly twice as long as the last trailer, which you might remember as the one that nearly crippled the Internet, bringing down the game's official site and almost every alternate download source. That behemoth lent insight into the overall look and feel of Liberty City; this one, however, focuses much more on protagonist Niko Bellic by showing off the game's dialogue and story through gorgeous cut scenes and absurdly lifelike animations.

At least that's what you take home after one viewing. If the response to the last trailer is any indication, the gaming community will treat this lengthier video as it would a frog in science class, poring over every detail in an effort to glean new insight into the dozens of as yet unannounced features. Two minutes of new GTA IV footage is like two hours to the millions of dedicated fans.

They've certainly been patient. After nearly ruining everyone's Christmas by delaying GTA IV until next year (the exact ship date is still unknown), Rockstar suffered a bout of deja vu when their controversial action game Manhunt 2 was banned in several countries due to excessive violence. GTA IV will also likely meet some resistance, though the franchise's high pedigree and tremendous pop culture impact pretty much guarantees success at retail.

Will this new trailer help their cause? Check it out and you decide.

GTA's are so much better than the Need For Speed series. graphics and playabiliy. I await its birth with anticipation and awe...

check out some of the cool new features

* The May 2007 issue of Game Informer reveals that after the initial load sequence, no such occurrences persist when entering/exiting buildings or crossing islands. The extent of the loadtime-free expectation in the game has also been commented on, when a Rockstar spokesperson claimed: "You can basically play the game from beginning to end without a single load screen."

* The player will not be able to fly aeroplanes, unlike some previous instalments of the Grand Theft Auto series. Helicopters, however, will be flyable onto any building rooftop. There is also a confirmed airport.

* Details are also revealed that demonstrate how variations in the terrain cause the way the character walks to change. The way the player moves is controlled by a physics engine instead of purely pre-written animations, therefore enabling character movements to be more realistic. Rockstar Games announced that Euphoria by NaturalMotion would be used in future Rockstar titles in a press release that accompanied the second trailer, confirming that Euphoria would indeed be used in the game.

* The player will also be able to perform a variety of new actions such as climbing telephone poles and fire escapes, pushing people who bump into him and calling women for dates. When selecting the mobile phone, a zoomed-in version of the mobile screen pops up in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and a list of several commands are made available to the player, such as "meet me here," etc.

* Bellic’s outfit can be changed throughout the game; however, it will not be possible to customize his physique or hairstyle as in San Andreas.

* Stealing a parked car can no longer be done simply by opening the door and driving off. Now it involves Niko approaching the car unnoticed, breaking the glass with his elbow, before hot-wiring it - only then can he use it. Also, there will be several animation variations to sneaking up to a car and breaking it. The way Niko enters the car would look different each time depending where and how he is in relation to the car. Because of the NaturalMotion system used in the game, the way the character will approach the car will be completely random. The trunks of cars will also be utilised by the player, though specific details are unknown. Furthermore, players will be able to choose from four different camera views whilst in a car according to their needs. The player will also be able to control vehicles such as boats and helicopters.

* The Police AI and star wanted levels now operate differently. When the police are in search of Niko, the player will now have to avoid a certain radius marked on the map in which the police will be looking for him. The size of this radius will increase with the player's wanted level (the more stars, the bigger the radius) and also re-centres itself on Niko's location if he is spotted by the police. Instead of utilising the 'Pay'N'Spray' as in previous games, Niko can now more realistically disguise himself by clandestinely changing vehicles in empty areas such as parking garages, a feature seen in the video game Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. Additionally, pedestrians can now report crimes such as car-jacking.

* The gunfight system has been reworked to feel natural by utilising a cover system similar to that of Gears of War and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, reason being that the combat system in previous games were awkward and cumbersome.

* It has been revealed that every street in the game will have a name for the reason that some missions will require the player to go to a specific address.

* In addition to the mobile phone, Rockstar has revealed that the player will also make use of the Internet as a means of communication. Although the exact details of the role of the Internet in the game are being kept under wraps, it has been revealed in a GamesTM Magazine article that Niko can access the web from various cybercafes (one of which is called "TW@") in order to upload his resume for prospective employers

I really like the sound of these 2 improvements, especially the gunfights, in the past they were damn annoying!!

"approaching the car unnoticed"

I wonder how that's gonna look like when you are chased by the police and quickly need another car just to escape.. there's not really gonna be enough time to approach the getaway car unnoticed and mess around with breaking in and hot-wiring it?!

Edit : no it is also for the 360 so it isn't a ps3 exclusive

explains why the graphics ain't as stunning:p

The 360 has exclusive content as well. It's expected the PS3 will also have some kind of exclusive. it was also rumored that the initial delay of the game was because they couldn't write the codes and what not for the PS3 and couldn't release one game without the other. Not fussed mind just can't wait for this game. Thinking of booking the week off work for it.

It was also romoured that they couldn't fit it on a single DVD, and you can't have a game like this spanning multiple disks, you'd be swapping them all of the time.

Are the PC versions of GTA much different from the Playstation ones, in terms of levels etc.?

Maybe its just me but did the graphics look great for the backgrounds ans scenery but not as fantastic on the player models as other games? Or am i just being picky.

Not just you....i thought they didn't look great but having said that it was on youtube

The new GTA looks like another nice criminal story with funny characters, again. I always liked it in GTA.

The city looks good... the technological jump between San Andreas and the new one is significant from screens and clips.

If they'll improve already excellent gameplay then this will propably be game of 2008. I hope the soundtrack will be good as always inluding those funny radio station when people call and throw meat on each other.

Would love to hear moaning Carragher phoning this station in game...:p

I don't think that it's as technically advanced in the graphics department as some other games are, but then it doesn't need to be.

It looked very well on trailers... and yeah, I don't think it needs so much details like Crysis but it still looks impressive, imo.

The radio stations in the GTA series are class, i downloaded the mp3 version of them just to listen to at one point, funny stuff :)

I can't wait for this game, should be great!

The map is smaller than San Andreas, I believe, so there wouldn't be enough room for planes. It's got more on it, though, so it's not less gameplay. San Andreas was a huge amount of dead space, after all.

You only need to look at Uncharted: Drakes fortress to see what GTA4 could have looked like graphically had it been PS3 exclusive. Mid you i can't wait to get it!

I have heard rumours that the next GTA (GTA5?) has been locked down as a PS3 exclusive.
