EA clarifies Rock Band pricing
News by

EA has confirmed the price for Rock Band, following the European date announcement this morning.
Europe, unlike the US, will not get all of the instruments bundled together with the game.
Instead, you will have to fork out for an Instrument Edition at GBP 129.99 / EUR 169 - comprised of the drum kit, guitar and microphone - then buy the game separately for GBP 49.99 / EUR 69.99.
Anyone after the whole lot will be looking at a total of GBP 180 / EUR 240, then. That's rather more than in the US, where you can buy the game and all the instruments for USD 169 - equivalent to around GBP 85 / EUR 107.
Wireless guitars will be sold separately for GBP 59.99 / EUR 79.99, while the drum kit will be GBP 69.99 / EUR 89.99.
Hopefully retailers will be offering their own bundles.
Rock Band will be out in Europe exclusively for Xbox 360 on 23rd May. PS3, PS2 and Wii versions will follow later this summer.

Instrument Edition (Guitar, Drums and Mic) (No Game) - £130
Game - £50
Drums - £70
Guitar - £60

feck EA, feck RockBand, and feck MTV/Harmonix

GTP isnt that much of a rip off £20 and you get 70 odd cars and some tracks.

£180 for a fecking game? What a fecking joke....

It's $180 in America so they are paying half the price

It's got more features and content than some full games.

That may be the case, but you could end up paying £70 for the full game. It's a dangerous precedent that could spark similar cases. It's a rip off, unless you get some kind of deal with the full version - which I doubt.

Yes.

WTF is Microsoft playing at here? Obviously they have payed EA for this (unless for some reason EA can't make enough of the instruments to go around and thus tossed a coin to see which system they should release it on first), yet then allow EA to charge 180 quid for it. Bizarre!

It's fecking shocking. All that money, people should get real instruments.

More fool the people who buy it I suppose, I won't be.

How's the project coming on?

i dont think its down to microsoft, software companies can charge what they want, i think its just EA being greedy, i was expecting £130 for all the instruments and the game.

It greed from EA, these are the people that only make decent sports games when there is a bit of competition which they try their hardest to destroy buy buying exclusive licenses

So if I change your opinion around to:

FIFA 08 was a rip off because you can't trade it back in for FIFA 09, while paying no more than £15 for the privilege. ;)

GT5 will not be out for another year, and I see little difference if you think of GT5 as an upgrade to GT5:Prologue that happens to have the same content but adds some more. The same could be said about most sports games that are thrown out with a new version number year after year after year.

It's been a long time since GT4, and the Prologue simply gives people the option to get a taste of the GT5 experience a year early if they want it. I'm sure many will simply wait for the full GT5.

Its more than the twatting console. They can feck right off, money grabbing cnuts.

A rip off is a rip off. I suppose at least Fifa goes some way to try to hide it (albeit with good box wording and paying for decent reviews ;)). Then again I don't pay full price for them every year either.

Which ever way you want to look at it, GT5 prologue is a cynical marketing ploy designed to rinse people of more money. It's a clever one, no doubt, but it's still a major rip off and don't be surprised to see more like this coming. Like it or not, Sony are just as bad as MS when it comes to pound signs.

BTW weastie, have you done anything with XNA yet? I'm meeting with my artist this weekend to discuss our first project and the technical requirements. Releases still seem like they are long winded on it, looks more like if you want to get things published it could be the way to go. I know a number of publisher contacts, but in this financial climate I doubt it's viable for now.

I agree with what you are saying, but the state that GT5:Prologue is in at the moment they simply could not have given it away for free (it would be enough for a lot of casual players - they would take the Prologue and not buy the main game, Prologue would be enough), so all they could do with it is A) Not released it at all, B) Put some type of limited use (time or playthroughs) in it. Option A would have pissed off a lot of those that actually bought it - the details of what it actually is I'm sure the majority of those already knew about.

No, I've not tried XNA yet, my computer died and I've only finally got it back in the same condition as it was before. VS 2005 is now reinstalled, so I'll download the XNA tools this weekend and have a look at it.

But why release it at all? They knew they could get money from it, that's why. If they wanted to release a demo, didn't Sony use to have demo discs for £5 or £10 not too long back? A few cars and tracks coupled with a few small demos of other games would be good.

I still think it's a con, and one that could well catch on.

Definitely let me know how you get on. I think I'm going to go the route of trying that and a few free 3D engines.

At the end of the day, people don't have to buy it, but it has been hugely successful which means people don't mind paying £20 for a 'demo' which could last you longer than a lot of the games that are currently out.
