Robert Glasper Experience - Black Radio
One of the early contender for the album of the year status, this is a hiphop/soul/pop and jazz crossover album - while that is usually is code for kitsch and worthless, this is a fantastic achievement.
The Experience consists of Robert Glasper, one of the most exciting young pianists and my favourite, Chris Dave (the best drummer around today), Derrick Hodge(bass) and Casey Benjamin (sax).
Apart from a Smells Like Teen Spririt cover, every track features vocalists, my favourite is the cover of a 60s Bowie track, Letter to Hermoine that has Bilal singing. Other notable guests: Erykah Badu, Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def), Lupe Fiasco, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ledisi...
