Clearly, his off the pitch issues have clouded his last 12 months at Boca. If you owned a club, would you enjoy having players with kidnapping problems ? most wouldn't .

For £7 million.

An absolute steal.

Quite a good deal considering he was rated at £19 million last Wednesday.

Well, when it's about Riquelme I'll just wait to see him with the new club's kit on.

Last year everything was sorted with Barca but it caused unrest among the players and was called off. A couple of months ago he was going to Mexico, then Brazil. A couple of weeks ago everything was sorted with Aleti and then Gil got pissed off with him. Last week Boca had agreed with Barcelona but the new coach didn't want him and was pissed off with Gaspart for not being consulted and being forced to have a player just because it was the Prez's obsession...

It was set to be announced today but until I see Riquelme arriving, suitcases and all in Barcelona I will remain sceptical.

He will definitely go somewhere this Summer though and for that price: 6-8m. It will be a steal, not sure yet if it will be Barca's...

He has been rated at 6-8m for a couple of months, all the recent "closed deals" were for that price range 6-8.

Who rated him at 19m? Probably one of the inflationary minds on the forum.

He's been having all sorts of problems with the management at Boca. Hope to see him get things back on track at Barca.

No, just the usual crap journalists.

Player valuations aren't rated by the media. That number was likely fabricated by some press weenie somewhere and then pasted into every Riqueleme article for added drama in the reporting. Ultimately, the player is rated at the price of the actual transaction.

True.

However, the economic situation in Argentina must have had a huge effect on the valuation and Boca's motivation to sell.

I think Riquelme is easily worth 2, maybe up to 3 times what Barcelona paid for him.

How much did Saviola go for?

Yeah, I know several of the clubs had not paid player wages for a few months, which caused quite a stir. Riquelme seems to have some other problems. He's turned into somewhat of a drama queen over the past year, which probably made him somewhat less attractive to Barca than a year ago when we were hearing a 16m transfer.

The "beauty" of the situation in Argentina is the following:

-Last year Riquelme was going for 25mUSD, which was 25m pesos.

-This year they sold him for 12mUSD, which is ~48m pesos. As most of the club's expenditure have stayed the same (they are in pesos), Boca is actually getting almost twice as much money/purchasing power as they were initially meant to, while costing Barca half of what they would have spent. In fact, Boca ended up getting more than River got for Saviola but that transfer cost Barca more money.

I have been saying this for a while, if there was a time to buy cheap in Argentina, it is now. I'm not saying we should buy anyone but I have been going on for a while about the Riquelme bargain status.

That was the last straw (he even considered quitting if not transferred) but he has been unsettled ever since the dream move to Barca didn't go through last year.

I think it started to show when Bianchi's contract was up.

That obviously didn't help. Bianchi left as he no longer had anything to prove/win at Boca. The same obviously applied to Riquelme but while the manager could just go he was stuck. Then the kidnap comes and, instead of Bianchi (a friend) he had to deal with a new coach (professional relationship). Not surprising he was unsettled!

ricquelme is highly unlikely to pull on a barca shirt until 2003/04. they're over their quota of non-eu players and unless they can persuade one of geovanni, rochemback or rivaldo to either leave or go out on loan, then it's ricquelme who is going to be loaned out. . .

I doubt Rivaldo will stay, from what I've seen during recent interviews/TV shows here. He just doesn't look excited at all about his future in Barca, you don't see him talking positively about them, total indifference. Whenever asked about his future he just says he is due to go back to Barca on X date and then he will see what happens.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is pretty certain that he is leaving.
