Apparently Boca are sorting out a deal that will take Riquelme to the Mexican club Cruz Azul.

That deal should be in the 6M region, definitely not more than 8M. If we are in the business of "waiting for the player to deliver", doesn't it make more sense to cash in on Veron, spend 6-8M on this guy and mould him to our needs +getting a much needed World Class CB?

Nope, when the whole Riquelme transfer saga took place Barca had major morale issues, a lot of players found it odd (got pissed off!) that yet another creative midfielder would be brought in (e.g. Rivaldo himself). The deal cooled off and Saviola proved a better choice as far as Barca are concerned.

Now Riquelme is desperately wanting to get out of Argentina for personal reasons and time is the factor for him. He wants out, be it Barca or Cruz Azul he doesn't want to stay one day more than is necessary. He has asked for ridiculous amounts of money as salary from Boca in order to force them to sell or risk him being out of contract. Having missed the WC attention has been diverted from him.

Time to make a move!

Its outrageous that we haven't made a move for him. He's probably worth three times what Boca are asking.

Minor (?) point. Based on the situation in Argetina, in Boca, with Riquelme in particular and the clubs offering (Cruz Azul and Cruzeiro) I am estimating the "asking price". There might be an element of % on next trasfer which would not apply to Man Utd.

It's about being a good negotiator, period. Riquelme might very well be out of contract soon and Boca can't afford to wait. Today, in Argentina, the purchasing power of 8M is equivalent to having sold Riquelme for ~26M only 6 months ago!!!!

For 8M we stand a very good chance, with 10 we walk away with him. Still far from Veron's 28! Riquelme is younger and is more likely to be adaptable, sit on the bench if needed, etc.

He is also the most humble, down to earth Argie I have seen in a while. Very boring for the press though ;)

No European clubs known to have made a move. During the World Cup everything freezes, everyone is watching WC performances, scouts, agents, everything revolves around it.

If Boca or Riquelme's agent approach a European club, what will happen?

-I'll watch him against England then.
-Errr, he is not playing.
-Well, I guess Veron is class.
-Errr, no, he is not in the squad.
-.....(silence)...(smell a rat).....(lost interest).....Why?
-Well, has had personal problems, blablabla.

He's just not hot right now. The problem is Boca need to sell him now. Opportunity it is called.

Where will you fit him ?

i've seen him play almost all of the matches this season (FoxSportsWorld). this guy is unbelievable for his age (22). Barce would be better off with Riquelme than their current Oscar weiner.

Where will you fit Veron? Why not do the same waiting/adapting but for a fraction of the cost, with a player that can give you many more years and less hassle with the press and other players?

Riquelme is much more likely to fit into United than Veron ever will be.

Riquelme can also get the ball, tear the opposition apart and score. Veron can't, he does that with his passes and at that point tactics and how the other players perform start being an issue. In those games we just don't look like scoring I would rather get Riquelme in than Veron, he has a much higher "turn the match around in 5 minutes" factor. He really is a handful.

Kemo, of all people, I didn't expect you to be wary about making a move for a highly rated player!

Midfield congestion was my only worry :D
We would need to sale some body. Any suggestions? :D

I already said it, offload Veron and spend the money on Riquelme and a quality CB.

Latest news on Riquelme:

-He is out of contract. Still, Boca have rights over him until June 2003 when he can become a free agent.

-After another kidnap threat/scare in his family, he has stated he will not play in Argentina any more. If Boca don't sell him he might consider hanging his boots to stop this thing with his family being a target.

-Boca will accept offers around 8 million

-The only problem is his greedy agent who would be looking for a salary ~35K a week.

I would go for it!

6m is a total fecking bargain. Though it's probably because his contract is almost up. It’s a wonder we don’t want to make an offer. I’d sell Veròn for 25m and sign Riquelme for 6m. Good business or what ? ;) He deserves to be in Argentina’s first-team, and should play for a big club. He would walk in to any team.

I think we need to stop buying South Americans. I'd prefer an English or Scandinavian player, who is more used to the style, or even French.

We only bought one didn't we? As for Riquelme, he is pure class, will be easier to adapt and, at that price, we can definitely afford to wait as he has many years to give to us.

You are making a generalization on two South American players we have signed in the past year and judging them for a combined total of 50 games. You forget they have to adapt to a different culture, country, people and language as well as style of play. But once they settle in a master this, the results will come back to you in style. Take Juan-Pablo Angel at Villa as an example. He was getting stick after four months in England, now he’s a fan’s favorite. Don’t give up on South Americans just yet. I agree Scandinavians have a better reputation in England for being consistent but how many players from Denmark possess the skill Veròn and Riquelmę do. Keep the faith and make no mistake, Riquelmę for 6m would be an absolute steal.

and thank goodness for that as well

:p

I don't care what anyone says, Veron out for 30m and Riquelme in for 6m would be an incredible piece of business.

they're probably selling a share in riquelme to cruz azul, and then loaning him there.

Or how about you try tuning your TV in Uganda, so you get better reception and can see that Veron wasn't the best player vs. England.

please point out my “anti-Verònism”. I am just stating something which any sane person would agree to, and that is selling Veròn for a small profit (or a minor loss, either way) and getting Riquelmè for about 20% of that price would be simply incredible business. I will defend Veròn to a point, but at the moment things aren’t happening for him and if he himself is talking about going to Juve or whatever, I won’t stop him. While he’s in a United shirt, I will support him and love him as much as any other player, but there are two sides to every coin. Veròn is not immune to criticism, as some blind folk think, and if a player is not playing well and making his own noises about going back to Italy, some action should be taken. People are pleading for Barthez to go and you seem to agree. So quit your whining and get back to pining for Rivaldo and god knows who. ‘kin Muppet.

That's what I suspected originally but no, due to the circumstances 8m is the price tag slapped on him. Now, if a lot of Euro clubs start bidding they will get that higher, that's why we should bid while everyone is waiting for the end of the WC to look into options!

For Cd

You brainless twat! I said he and Owen where the best in first half along with Butt. Not in the whole match. Go find a new brain and a better tv set muppet :p

For Gazza:
You silly punk. Veron is not immune to criticism but why sell him because of his performances over a year.? Scholes was as pathetic as him in my opinion last season. Should we sell him too?
The answer is no!
Veron needs another year before he can be confined to the scrap heap!

If we by Riquleme it should just be to add depth to our midfield cuz he plays on either wing, in the center and in the hole as well. (He is a great finisher by the way). Selling Veron is stupid. At this point in time with his current form we would make a big finnacial loss instad of a gain.

By the way, what would Veron's sale price be if United decided to offload him?

Me recknos no more than 20 mill.

why were you advocating to go for Rivaldo kemo ? Explain that one. I am not saying we should sell Seba, in fact I have been one of a few who have backed him for the months you weren't on this site. I am just stating fact, and that is getting Riquelme while making 20-odd million would be too hard to turn down.

It's simple Gazza. Rivaldo is one of the few players in the World who can operate in Fergie's "hole"! He is just turning 30 and is still at his peak(In my opinion!). And Barca seem willing to sell him since he has no desire to renew his contract. Also, the Barca 4-1 thrashing of Liverpool convinced me. In that match everything went through him against the toughest defence in the land. And he made them look fifth rate. We have lacked such a weapon at OT since the departure of Cantona. Someone who can unlock such defences, can play deep enough to link the midfield with attack while being a creato
r and frequent scorer of goals. There is no cheaper and better bet than Rivaldo is now. Especially since he has a year left to stay with Barca. Besides, Fergie has always wanted him. He should move now for him imo! :)
