RIP Paul Newman

Passed away late yesterday after a long running battle against cancer. Top man, great actor.

From June 11th 2008.

Movie star Paul Newman has quietly turned over the entire value of his ownership in Newman’s Own — the company that makes salad dressing and cookies — to charity.

Completed over a two-year period in 2005 and 2006, the amount of his donations to Newman’s Own Foundation Inc. comes to an astounding $120 million.

This is unprecedented for any movie star or anyone from what we call Hollywood. Of course Newman and actress wife Joanne Woodward have never been Hollywood types. They’ve lived their lives quietly in Westport, Conn., for the last 50 years. (They were married in January 1958. And people said it wouldn’t last!)

Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles. But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee. Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather. Dedicated philanthropist... Always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune. In his own words: 'It's been a privilege to be here.' He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves us with extraordinary inspiration to draw upon.

— Statement from Newman's and Joanne Woodward's three daughters Elinor, Melissa and Claire.

"What we got heeeer, is Failya to communicate"

My favourite film

cool hand luke is possibly my favourite film ever, excellent actor and all the charity work he did shows he was a great person too

Hammer, have you seen Rachel, Rachel?

Any good?

No, not seen that one, sorry.

The missus and I are trying to think of the film he made in the early 80s (I think), where he is an alcoholic, washed-up lawyer, who gets a chance to prove himself in court again. Neither of us can think of the title.

The Verdict. Brought together Newman and Sydney Lumet. Great movie. Should have won an oscar for that one but lost to Ghandhi.

That's the one! For some reason I had 'And Justice For All' in my head, which was Pacino.

Was looking at my dvd collection and noticed a lack of Newman films...have a few, but no Sting, no Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, no Cool Hand Luke, no Hustler....this needs to be rectified forthwith.

Same director.

One of my all time favourites. Such a charming man and great philanthropist too. One of the real good guys to come out of Hollywood, and we know those are hard to come by.

RIP Paul.

Thank you for the movies.

'I'd like to be remembered as a guy who tried — tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn't complacent, who doesn't cop out.' - Paul Newman

What a fecking, that is Hollywoodesque, but it's real which makes it all the more profound

Yep. He managed to achieve all of that. Something today's gen of Hollywood would do well to learn from. LEGEND.
I'm going to watch Butch Cassidy today for sure.
