I was wondering if you guys noticed all the mistakes RIO made in that game, if it were a better team it could have been a diffferent score line, it was just a shaky performance from him. Not good enuff for a £30 mil player.

Who remembers Stam's first half of the season??????

we need to give him time, after all he used to play for the sheep. He needs to grow into a real United player.

Rio's always been like that from west ham to Leeds. its a part of his game we'll need to accept short-term. Long term i hope fergie can iron it out.if he doesnt think he can, then we should go back to brown-silvestre which was very solid.

Hopefully he gets much better and stronger as the games come on!!. ;) ;)

I sincerely hope he hasn't always been "shaky" as you suggest otherwise United had no business buying him at all let alone shelling out 30m or whatever it was. As I do not watch Leeds or West Ham unless they're playing against us I cannot really comment on your assertion except to say that Rio looked solid as a rock at the World Cup, which in itself rather disproves your theory. He seems to have all the necessary attributes to be a great CB but he will take time to settle in just like all his predecessors eg Pallister & Stam. However,I agree his performances so far for us have been inconsistent, which would be compounded if were to be paired with Larry for example, although I think Fergie has finally got over that idea. Wes has been a steadying influence, although against West Brom I felt that a better attack could have exposed them both a lot more.

There is little doubt that Mickey & Wes are our best bet based on actual performances, with JOS in support. That would mean leaving Rio on the bench and I can't see Fergie doing that just yet.

yeah hes obviously got to play him. if only for the fact that he cost 30mill.
But yes, Ferdinand has always been guilty of lapses of concentration all through his career. Some papers have suggested he plays better against the bigger teams. Now i dont know about that, but certainly the odd lapse here and there. But, if Mickey Silvestre can sort himself out theres no reason Rio cant.

sorry JD i didnt mean shaky. the original thread starter used that term in relation to last weekends match.
I just mean he's been prone to lapses of concentration throughout his club career

I do quite well, I remember his debut at Wembley in the Charity Shield, was all over the shop and I questioned him then whether he really was the next United great

However, he's not the only one that proved me wrong, just look at Big Peter Schmiechel, he had an awful start letting in goals worse that what I could score with my eyes closed, and its the same with Tiabi (who I wish was given more than a 4 game spout in goal), they all started off quite bad, you can't just expect to buy a player and expect him to perform straight away, Il second what Gulli said and give the lad some time

Rio just needs time to bed into the team and get used to playing with Brown.I think and Fergie has also said that they are our long term partnership so he needs to get them playing together a.s.a.p.

Rio hasn't shown the form expected of a £30million player but given the injuries he's had is understandable. I felt a little bit sorry for John O'Shea. He missed out when Mickey was moved back to the Left to make way for Rio to return.

Rio wasn't bought as a short term solution, he's young enough to be here for over 10 years. Its a big step up to a club like United and it doesn't help when you have 3 injuries in the first few months (when you've previously been a very injury-free player). I do remember how shaky Stam was in the first 6 months, and when you think of Veron and Forlan, you should realise that it takes a lot of adjustment to play for United. This topic really isn't needed as its too early to judge Rio, if its necessary at all as he's already proven himself in the Premiership and World Cup.

im not judging him as a united player yet. someone made the comment that he thought Rio was shakey against WBA. my point is that he's always been prone to lapses of concentration throughout his club career. we should get used to it. it took mickey a couple of years to iron them out when he came to United, i suspect Rio will be the same.

Yeah, I remember a couple of years back when I considered Mickey to be a real defensive liability. He could play really well for most of a match, but I always half expected him to make that fatal mistake at any moment. And look at where he is now.

Rio's had such a start-stop year, we really have to wait until the end of the year before we can fairly judge his performances.

Everyone come to a new club need some time to get used, and Rio's injury surely hasn't help him. If he can get an injury-free run from now on, I'm sure he will gradually show his class -- which is the best CB of England in his generation. Fans just need to have a little more patient.

Less than a year ago there were stories that Mickey wanted to leave unless he played centre back. I was disappointed because I thought he was a promising left back but not good enough for central defence. He seemed to lack concentration. Look at him now!

If Rio isn't up to standard we still have Gaz, Wes, Mickey and John as a back four. Even with that competition I think Rio will become a regular.

All the above comments are valid about Rio. We've obviously got to be patient and his quality will come through finally. The only problem is this season and trying to wrest the PL from Arsenal. It could be that whilst we wait for Rio to settle in and maybe a new striker as well, Arsenal who have had a completely settled squad from the off, will get too far away from us. We cannot afford to let in sloppy goals as we have done in recent games or miss vital chances as we have also done recently during the run in. Every match is crucial and not exactly the best time for people to be "settling in".

The critical period is starting from March, when the PL enter the final two months and all the other cups enter the final few stages. Hope we don't have serious injury problem and most of our players are in good form at that time.

yeah, sack rio .. we only bought him for half a season

We had a similar situation during the Treble, where we had just lost the title to Arsenal and were kind of struggling at the beggining of the season, but once Stam and Co. clicked, we just steam rolled evryone, at that time if Giggs, becks, Keane or scholes got injured we struggled, this year our midfield is well covered, so is defence, if it does not settle, we can always go back Wes and Silvestre.

It just in attack we need options.
