Leeds say Chee-Rio

The biggest story of the day comes from Elland Road, with Alex Ferguson preparing a reported £25m swoop for Rio Ferdinand. Leeds need to sell some big names to balance the books and Man Utd need a quality centre back: the 89 minute man clearly fits both bills. The Star reports that Peters Kenyon and Ridsdale have already discussed whether a buy-out clause in Ferdinand’s contract, due to come into operation next summer, can be brought forward.

If this is true I will be bloody annoyed

It does mention The Star so maybe it is a load of bollox.

I was told by a reliable source that Leeds have turned down a £30 million bid for Rio so why they would let him go the MU for less I don't know.

Whats the likelihood that this is true Shaun ? Could this be the way Ridsdale brings in the cash he said he needed ?

Who's this Shaun you are talking to?

My thoughts are that Rio will not be sold...the Bowyer thing was different as he was at the end of his contract and that took the decision out of PR's hands.

I did mention this over a week ago.

Though I agree with you MOT why would they sell to a rival club for less than they have been offered by presumably a foreign club.

Shall we have a guessing game they do in the general forum or shall I just tell you it's Mike?

:)

Very unlikely. Ferdinand is not the finished article and UTD clearly are looking for established players (e.g. Ayala, Thuram). This is pure spec based on Fergie's obvious statement that we are looking to strengthen defence and Leed's financial position. Ferdinand, like Brown, has fantastic potential. He just isn't what UTD need at the moment.

Probably as close as you are going to get.

hmmmm....sorry mark, mike, errr marching....but jedi master has great feeling rio will in fact be a man utd player next season....clouded though this boy's future is....also great balance in the force suggests that thuram has in fact been signed for approx. 17 mil quid....not one to dabble in dark side of rumours is jedi master, but these two look pretty much cert.... ;)

Unlsee United are willing to spend 60million in the transfer market he is not worth the cash. Thuram and Ayala are cheaper and with thebetter experience. Besides, Mexes will replace blanc in 2004 and by then Brown and O'shea will be ready for the first team so why the hell spoil their chances of being in the first team next season or in seasons to come?

Rio ferdinand,
Coming to old trafford my arse we dont want
the overated, overpriced, defender.
we have o`shea and he`s better ;) :D

He was overpriced when Leeds bought him, and he hasn't really done anything to justify a 25m price tag while at Leeds.

I don't know whether he is in the 25m price range yet Raoul but he has been a class act for us this season...great buy and can only get better.

Don't really like the idea of seeing Rio in a Red shirt. He is an immense talent and I am happy to see him as the first name on the England team-sheet, but I think we need someone with a touch more experience, someone who has major european honors. Someone like Thuram or Ayala. Also, I think Rio and Wes are very much in the same mould. Brown (when he has confidence) is cool, calm and collected, and very mature. He needs an older lad to teach him the tricks to the trade. Blanc is doing this to some extent and he can only learn more. Let's just say I think we can do better for 25m. ;)

i think hes become a better player at leeds ...

since he left West Ham and became a regular England international he has definately improved in to one of the finest defenders in England, no doubt about that. Still don't want him at OT though. ;)

I'd love to have him at Old Trafford, he's a superb defender, surely one of the best in the world, is English and seems a great lad as well..

IMO he's worth anything up to 20-25 mil

I'd be delighted if we signed him

This would be a massive blow to Ichk's master plan of panic buying a few Italian defenders. ;)

There's no way. He's Leeds captain and also used in allthe promotion of merchandise for next season. So he's not going...yet.

If we don't make the CL next season he will be gone. I think that's the clause in his contract.

Yes
Remember how good the last player we bought from Leeds was
He could have a similar effect ( obviously in a differant way )
Him and Wes would play together well
I doubt it will happen though
I have it on fairly good authority that we have virtually signed Nesta

When the official site announces it, then it's happened.

We don't sign every player that SAF likes.

I was speaking to an Italian agent...He said it was almost signed sealed and delivered and that Nesta would be with us after the World cup

Raoul, have you ever seen Wallace and Gromit over there?

More on the story.

"We are building a team around Rio and he is not for sale at any price. He is not one of the players we would entertain letting go."

fecking obvious if you ask me. Similarly for Duff, although I think his contract runs out in two years time so if he doesn't sign then he would be available, though why he'd want to become a second choice with us I don't know.

I think we need some criteria for probably transfers, to weed out the highly unlikely.

It does say he has a buy out clause in his contract. If this is indeed the case, then Ridsdale may not have a choice.

Would Rio want to play for Man Utd?

Feckin right he would.

The buy out clause is of a financial nature...ie Leeds have to be offered shed loads more than what they paid as they were guaranteeing their assett.

If Fergie really has only offered 20 million that won't even reach the buy out clause so no worries...yet.

NB: Ferdinand did not come to United because West ham refused to sell him to us, claiming we would not develope him and accepted the first bid from Leeds. And since by then stam and Brown were excellent Fergie let it pass

3 words that stand out to me from your comments -
 • fairly
 • virtually
 • almost

AND, the most obvious reason to doubt your prediction - Italian agent.

No disrespect pete but Nesta's agent was quoted as saying he's going to Inter, Cragnotti says he's going nowhere and Nesta's Mum say's he's going to the shop to buy milk!!!

Stay tuned
