IDB, RIO GRANDE DO SUL, SIGN LOAN CONTRACTS FOR £32.3 MILLION
Resources to preserve environmental quality of Guaiba River watershed
The governor of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, Antonio Britto
Filho, and Inter-American Development Bank President Enrique V. Iglesias today
signed contracts for two loans totaling $132.3 million for a program to improve
the environmental quality and preserve the natural resources of the Guaçba River
watershed in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The resources will benefit about 400,000 inhabitants of the metropolitan
area of Porto Alegre by expanding the coverage of the sanitary sewerage systems.
Sewerage systems will also be improved in the cities of Cachoeirinha and
Gravataç, and pollution-control measures will be taken to protect Lake Guaçba and
its tributaries.
In addition, a rural extension program will target soil management and
conservation, reforestation and control of pollution from toxic agricultural
chemicals. This program will benefit 7,820 low-income farming families.
The area's biodiversity will be protected by preserving habitats in parks
and nature reserves.
The IDB financing includes a $110.2 million loan from ordinary capital for
a 25-year term, at a variable annual interest rate, currently at 6.77 percent,
and a $22.1 million loan from the Fund for Special Operations, the Bank's soft-
lending window, for a 25-year term at an annual interest rate of 3 percent.
