With Ferdinand saying he is happy at Leeds and happy with Tel, and Nesta almost defintely staying in Lazio, it looks as though there could be a possiblity we do not get any of our number 1 targets!
However what many reports on Ferdinands comments forgot to say was that :
"Winning trophies is very important to me. I've never won anything in my life and i'm not afraid to say that i'm getting impatient."
So what is the deal??

You know there are more CBs in the world except for those 2...

Looks like we'll have Barthez Blanc Thuram Silvestre and Gary Neville as our defense next season. Inspiring isn't it? :(

Be patient - players will be coming

I'm glad we're not gonna pay stupid money for Rio or Nesta; if we paid any more than £20-22m for Rio or £15-20m for Nesta I would be gutted to be honest.

true, its not unusual for summer transfers to drag out until early into the new season. Whatever
happens were allready the favourites for next yrs title, whoever comes in will just strengthen that fact.

We put in a solid bid for Recber, but he's staying put - what other goalkeepers are available that are better than Barthez? What other top notch CB's are there? Ok, I think our defense would be good if we got Thuram AND Ayala, but things have gone very quiet on the Ayala front. I'd be slightly surprised if Duff went to Liverpool, since he's a United supporter and must know that Giggs ain't getting any younger and misses a lot of games. It all depends on how ambitious he is. It is starting to get worrying that pre-season has started without any new players yet.

I agree i haven't been to hot on signing them for big money anyway .... i have always said that AYALA is the man for us IMO.

Not in my eyes

Arsenal are my favourites, and if Liverpool secures the signings of Duff and Bowyer, they will be a VERY good side!

Nor me, unless we do some real strengthening. Even the Toon will take some beating next year, they've made some good signings.

From the MEN:
RIO Ferdinand's naked ambition is the ace up Manchester United's sleeve as they bid to lure the England defender away from Leeds.

The arrival of Terry Venables as manager of the Reds' Yorkshire rivals has complicated the United bid, but Sir Alex Ferguson remains quietly confident that he can land his number one summer target.

Ferdinand was perhaps England's top player at the World Cup finals, and that will have whetted his appetite for more success - an appetite more likely to be satisfied at Old Trafford.

But the 22-year-old ex-West Ham star is impressed by the appointment of the widely-respected Venables, saying: "His record speaks for itself. He has a proven track record and although I was sorry to see David O'Leary go, if you have to get a replacement then Terry Venables is the man.

"With Mr Venables in charge, I'm sure Leeds can look forward to an exciting future."

But Ferdinand's eagerness to win trophies - allied to Leeds' desperate need to raise cash - gives United, out to claim back the Premiership crown they lost to Arsenal last season, the upper hand in the battle to secure the former West Ham man's services.

He said: "I really don't know how many players the club needs to sell or how much they need to raise but we all understand that money doesn't grow on trees.

"The fact we did not qualify for the Champions League means the budget is tighter.

"Winning trophies is very important to me. I've never won anything in my life and I'm not afraid to say I'm getting impatient.

"I may be only 23 but I feel like time's moving on and I'm not getting any younger. It's a relatively short career and when you finish you want to look back on what you've achieved.

Desire for success

"The clearest way of assessing it is to look at your medals - and I don't have any. I want things yesterday."

Ferdinand, currently holidaying with friend and potential Old Trafford defensive partner Wes Brown, will talk to his Leeds bosses when he returns, saying: "People have said a deal has been done to sell me but it hasn't as far as I know. I've never asked to leave and the club haven't told me they are selling me.

"I spoke to the chairman before I went to Las Vegas on the first part of my holiday and we agreed to talk when I got back."

Whatever happens in those discussions, the Yorkshire club know a serious offer - likely to be around £25m - would take a large chunk out of their £70m debt, even if Lee Bowyer's proposed £7m move to Liverpool goes through.

Ironically, Bowyer's transfer to Anfield could give United the advantage in the race for Blackburn's Irish forward Damien Duff.

Liverpool looked as though they had edged ahead of the Reds in the chase for the World Cup ace, but their move for Bowyer makes it unlikely that they would go for Duff as well, leaving the way open for an Old Trafford bid.

United's scouting network is working at full capacity. If the Ferdinand bid fails, the Reds would have to put defensive Plan B into operation.

Sir Alex Ferguson urgently seeks to rebuild a defensive department shorn of Ronny Johnsen, Ronnie Wallwork and Denis Irwin this summer.

With Lazio's Alessandro Nesta likely to remain in Serie A with either Inter Milan or Juventus, Fergie will be monitoring Juve's French international Lilian Thuram, PSV Eindhoven's Kevin Hofland and 23-year-old Jorge Andrade of Porto.

New link that one at the end isn't it?

And TeamTalk:
United's hopes of signing either Rio Ferdinand or Alessandro Nesta have faded with both players likely to stay at Leeds and Lazio respectively.
Ferdinand has saluted the appointment of Terry Venables as Leeds boss as "great news for the club" and insists he has never asked to leave the Elland Road club.
The England international centre-back has been linked with a £35million move to Old Trafford, but despite admitting his disappointment at the sacking of David O'Leary, he has saluted the appointment of the former England boss.
"It's great news for the club. I'm looking forward to meeting Mr Venables and hearing his plans," Ferdinand said.
"His record speaks for itself. He has a proven track record and although I was sorry to see David O'Leary go, if you have to get a replacement then Terry Venables is the man.
"With Mr Venables in charge, I'm sure Leeds can look forward to an exciting future."
And speaking to The Sun, Ferdinand insists that despite all the speculation over his future, he has always been happy to stay at Elland Road.
"My position has never changed in all this," Ferdinand added. "People have said a deal has been done to sell me but it hasn't as far as I know.
"It makes me feel quite uncomfortable that some people have seen me as the man in the middle in what has happened at the club, because I haven't done anything.
"I've never asked to leave and the club haven't told me they are selling me. I spoke to the chairman before I went to Las Vegas on the first part of my holiday and we agreed to talk when I got back to training.
"I won't go into details about what was said but I am still a Leeds player and I haven't asked for a transfer."

And the chances of United bringing in Nesta are also slim, with Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti now saying that the Italian international is set to stay in Rome.
Cragnotti had agreed to sell Nesta to Serie A rivals Inter Milan but they have now backed out of the deal when hearing that Lazio wanted Cristiano Zanetti in part-exchange.
Cragnotti said: "It's 99 per cent certain that Nesta will stay at Lazio. The conditions I fixed for this transaction are no longer in place."

It gets better, add Ronaldinho to that list.

From the Terrace

Ronaldinho says he has not been contacted by United or Barcelona, who were also reported to have made a bid, and quite clearly states that he will stay in the French capital, where he has four years left on his contract, no matter what any other clubs offer.

I should probably point out that Ronaldo is staying put too.

Almost seems wise our holding out, haven't you noticed the silly money that was quoted for average players is coming down now. There are not many other clubs with real money in the pocket like we have.

Fergie may end up with some better deals as quite honestly 25/30 mill for Rio and 20 mill for Duff is completely stupid in my eyes, feck you got pay these guys on top of that.

Perhaps now might be a good time to get shares in United, there should be a good dividend this year.

Thats a very good point - it seems the clubs are responding to the bubble bursting by holding on to the players that they've got until they know which way the market is moving. This has to be one of the quietest transfer seasons ever, especially considering it is a post world cup one. I know Alex has said that he thinks that it is just waiting for a domino reaction as a lot of clubs need to sell a player or two before they buy - triggering a chain reaction.

A very dangerous game to play, especially if you are very much in the need for 3 new players or so.

ahhh, but have the best in the biz do United....grand master Ferguson will soon sort things out, no worries....

I know of a Norwich City defender going on the cheap.pardon the pun.

Ok this one is from TribalFootball, so I'll see if the quotes referred to are to be found anywhere else, but here it is anyway.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes of landing Juan Pablo Sorin have been dashed.
Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti has blocked the move, insisting the left-sided wing-back is needed in Rome.

Sorin and striker Claudio Lopez have been linked with a swap for United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron.

Cragnotti's decision is expected to see Ferguson target Rennes left-back Julian Escude.

I honestly think that if united does not strengthen their team soon, the scousers will do the double over us again. The gunners will do the same and who knows ... bottom clubs might soon think that the supriority of Man Utd is a thing of the past.

We haf released quite a number of players and we do not have many backups available. Unless of course Fergie decides to promote more of his young fledgings!!!

I'd have no problem with some of the younger players getting promoted to the 1st team. If they're good enough they're old enough. try them in pre-season and see how they do. "you'll ne'er win anything wi' kids" I rememer hearling once!

I don't believe it, if we get Nesta for anything under 20m I'd absolutely thrilled.

Nesta will come mark my words

Have to agree, AEBM, if we sign Ayala + maybe two more I will be happy.

Let it go. If Inter were willing to pay a bit more, Nesta would be their player. United aren't even in for his services.

You give it a rest Amir. Sir Alex said he wanted Nsta and that is official. We are just bidding out time like a vulture. Vulrues always get what the want after waiting patiently :p

We must be patient now as I can't see Fergie will do nothing after we got the worst result in ten years last season. Nesta and Rio may not come but they are not the only good defenders in this world.

The Alessandro Nesta transfer saga continued on Tuesday with Lazio supremo Sergio Cragnotti claiming the deal with Inter Milan was close to collapse.

Nesta: Transfer woe
(Picture/Allsport)
The Rome-born central defender was all set for £25million-plus-player move to the San Siro, but the two clubs have been unable to agree on which player should be involved in the swap deal.

Lazio want Milan midfielder Cristiano Zanetti at the Stadio Olimpico but Internazionale are reluctant to include him in the deal.

Following a meeting of both sides on Tuesday morning Cragnotti said: 'It is 99 per cent certain that Nesta will stay. Inter know which player we want. Our coach Roberto Mancini has asked me specifically for Zanetti.'

Inter chief Massimo Moratti confirmed the £40million deal had stalled. 'It looks like Nesta is staying at Lazio,' he said.

'Cragnotti claimed the deal was 50 per cent done on Monday, now he says it's 99 per cent off - and Cragnotti's opinion counts for more than mine in this case.'

The collapse of the deal opens the door for Juventus and Manchester United who are also interested in signing the 24-year-old central defender.

And with Lazio wanting to sell players to reduce their wage bill, Cragnotti was keen to play-up Juventus' interest in his star player.

'They could still beat Inter to Nesta, but they know we want Edgar Davids. If the Dutchman wants to join Lazio, we're waiting for him,' he said.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already bought Juan Veron from Lazio and has travelled to Italy numerous times to watch Nesta in action.

Following Veron's poor show in the Premiership, and at this summer's World Cup, any swap deal could involve his return to Lazio, where the Laziali adores the Argentine international.

Fergie bided his time before signing Laurent Blanc. Nesta might take as long. Don't hold your breath.

Thuram? Are you sure we'll be getting him?

and even with thuram out of that lineup, some deluded folks here will say that's all that's needed to win the CL and Premiership.
