'tis a silly place
David O'Leary was quoted after Leeds Uniteds' game against Fulham saying that he would not let Rio Ferdinand go and claimed he has already rejected a £60Million bid from an unnamed club for Ferdinand.

?

Surely this is not true... Zenadine Zidane was sold from Juventus to Real Madrid this summer for £48Million, whilst Jaap Stam was sold from Manchester United to Lazio for £16Million, and though Ferdinand is a good defender and transfer fees are spiralling I can not accept that any club in the world would offer this much money - and if this is true and Peter Risdale had known about it I am sure he would have done his utmost to negotiate a deal as Leeds United must recoup some money no matter how dissolusion some Leeds supporters are.

After Leeds United bought Robbie Fowler it took David O'Leary's spending to about £90million or something and he has recouped about £11Million!

I actually remember reading an interview in the official Manchester United magazine by George Best and he said - this about two years ago - that if Rio Ferdinand in worth £19Million than Wes Brown is worth £25Million! )

The 60m quid is just mindgames by O'leary, it's a farce. Rio is a good defender, but he's not worth more than twice the amount of the most expensive defender at the moment.

I'd like him at OT though - for 14 million quid, nothing more.

If Ferdinand is so great, then why was the defence at West Ham so crap when he was there? All of a sudden he the best defender in England. Well he hasn't shown it playing for England. Face reality. Leeds are defence first, defence second and maybe attack third club. They stack the back and hope for a goal on the counter attack. It's no wonder they've had problems scoring.

I think this might fall into the category of "wind up posts" but here goes anyway...

Any link to this quote Gazza?

I would be amazed if anyone offered 60M for Rio or any other defender in England but if DOL said it I can't think of any reason for him to say it if it were not true.

It makes me Gazza to think you believe PR would not know of every offer that came in for any Leeds player

The transfers of certain players were linked to performances in Europe etc so the transfer fees quoted have not yet been paid - by the time the final payments are made on players like Fowler, Johnson and Keane the spending will be around 98M and he has recouped around 30M Gazza NOT 11M

As far as Bestie saying what YOU say he did....why would he say that 2 yrs ago when Rio was still at WHU and nobody had even mentioned him being worth 19M....if he was worth 19M 2 yrs ago as you say the 18M we paid in Nov 2000 looks a bargain

With this effort Gazza you are struggling to take Dafto's wind up king title ;)
