Rio clause revealed
United appear unable to sign Rio Ferdinand after Leeds revealed a contract clause prevents him being sold to another Premiership side.
Ferdinand's club Leeds have announced that the England World Cup star cannot move on to another club in the top-flight due to a clause inserted in the deal he agreed when he arrived at Elland Road from West Ham for £18million in November 2000.

Obviously the purpose of having such a clause in his contract (if true) is to keep him away from major local rivals such as United. However, Leeds apparently need the money desperately and 30 million plus is too good to turn down. If United are prepared to outbid any foreign club ( and its a big if) then the clause can surely be overidden by joint agreement between the parties (Leeds and Rio). Either way Leeds would be most reluctant sellers to us and we may not be prepared to bid the sort of money they would be looking for anyway, so perhaps we fans should quietly forget about Rio.

Funny, seems that DOL never mentioned such a clause when asked about bids for Rio, he said that if an offer of around £ 25 - 30 million came in, he may be sold.

Yes, because he was asked on live TV. Did oyu want him to go into a 5 minute monologue of the ins and outs of Rio's contract on live TV?

Leeds need to raise money according to Ridsdale. The summer is half over and they've made no moves yet. Something will have to give after the WC. Either Bowyer & Smith or Rio.

What on earth makes you think Smith is likely to leave?

He was pictured wearing a Rangers shirt the other day, maybe his heart is set on a move to Ibrox. ;)

Is he going to Inter Milan too?

Leeds have 60 million debt in a 25 year bond. That means they are only voluntarily calling in their transfer deficit of 14 million for last season. They were also had too many players to over for the possibility of some going to jail. Hence the need to reduce numbers and wages and keep the PLC happy by wiping the transfer defecit. Beyond that they are in no more financial dire straits than anyone else. But the media don't want to do this as for some reason, even though everyone hates Leeds, it seels papers to constantly say they are selling players.

Leeds may sell Rio but it won't be to clear their debt. It will be because he wants to go...which is looking increasingly likely.
