Queens Park Rangers are set to sign Rio Ferdinand, while they have also agreed a fee for his fellow central defender Steven Caulker.

Ferdinand, 35, is expected to join on a free transfer after his release from Manchester United.

A bid for Cardiff City captain Caulker, 22, has been accepted but Rangers will face opposition from other clubs.

Harry Redknapp's side were promoted to the Premier League last season and the manager is keen to reshape his squad.

They have released Andrew Johnson, Aaron Hughes and Stephane Mbia after their contracts expired, and also confirmed the departure of former England full-back Luke Young, 34, along with Hogan Ephraim, Angelo Balanta and Tom Hitchcock.

Peckham-born Ferdinand spent 12 years at United and made 455 appearances. He won six Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup while at Old Trafford.

Caulker joined Cardiff from Tottenham but has a release clause in his contract which was triggered by the club's relegation from the Premier League last season.

Will be very strange to see him playing for The Hoops.

Ferdinand and Caulker could be a decent CB pairing. But, it seems QPR have learned nothing from their previous PL adventure.

Ferdinand shouldn't be starting in the PL anymore i don't think. Caulker will be a good signing.

If Ferdinand is given adequate rest time and isn't expected to play game after game, he'll do great. He's still a fanstastic CB when managed correctly. He's not able to play 35+ games a season, but 20/25 games I imagine he'd be fine with.

Ferdinand will do very well in a team that can afford to sit deep in a way that United can't really. Especially if he's at a club with no European football. I confidently predict that there will be a few people this time next season saying he should be in the squad for the Euros in 2016...

Just around 13-14 months ago he finished the season as one of the best CBs in the league, don't write him off because of one poor season against Moyes. See Terry.

I read that the QPR board are trying to veto the Rio deal and rightly so. I don't understand why Redknapp and Big Sam are enamoured with highearning old timers. QPR should have learnt their lesson by now.

Rio is still quality, just can't play 40+ games a season. I think he'll prove a few people wrong. QPR board should be delighted that they can attract someone of his stature

I just think he'll be caught out for pace and 1 on 1 situations.

People said that about Paul McGrath and his dodgy knees.

It's not just that. In the studio he clearly comes across as a very intelligent bloke when he talks about the game but i think during game situations he mentally isn't there like he used to be, time will tell if it was a one season blip or not.

He showed against Bayern that if you play deep he can still perform. If QPR sit deep and play on the counter, which they most likely will do then that would suit Rio.

Caulker is far too good for them. He definitely has a place in the squad of a top 7 or 8 premier league side.

I think the money will be better spent on a younger defender. At QPR he'd have to defend a lot more than he did at United.

At QPR he'd also sit deep. Would be less exposed as they would attack less than us. Won't be on the half way line like he should with us as we'd always play on the front foot.

He was brilliant against Bayern.

One of the better 'high earner' signings they've made imo, still a top player when used right. I think we got rid of him to help usher in a new era, he could still have contributed. He was written off time and time again at United in recent years, and always proved people wrong. Will be weird to see, but good luck to him.

Rio's been here for so long that QPR will be a strange change, but I hope that it all works out for him.

He lost his pace few years ago, I don't think he is much slower now than he was year, or year and a half ago.
What's questionable about him right now IMO is that is he still interested in playing football as he used to be, does he still have inspiration to be serious about it, and I guess we will find out soon.

he can be their Distin.. wouldnt write him off he still has a year or even two in him left for a side of their level..

I think QPR will do alright. Redknapp is seen as a joke by many, but he'll do a much better job at building a squad for the Prem than Warnock/Hughes did.

I think Caulker and Rio are good signings for them. I think Harry will bring in more players of that kind of quality, as opposed to the SWP's and Andy Johnson types that Sparky brought in. I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Micah Richards, Tom Ince and Moses also going to QPR.

Richards is probably off to Newcastle & Ince to Hull.

They have a load of shite they need to get off the wage bill before they can start sorting a proper squad though I think, Remy's on quite a bit and he'll probably leave for a decent fee so that'll do 'em good but they still have people like Zamora, Green, SWP & Hoilett on over £50k a week, not to mention other dead wood like Jenas, Luke Young, Clint Hill who'll all be on fair whack. Madness how that club's run.

Caulker is so overrated. He scores goals but he's not actually that good at his actual job, defending.

If Steven Caulker can't be arsed playing in the Championship he really should stop signing for teams almost certain to get relegated.
