Leeds boss David O'Leary has refused to rule out a summer move to Manchester United for star defender Rio Ferdinand.
The 23-year-old Londoner, who performed impressively in England's 1-0 win over Argentina at the World Cup, has been linked with a £25m switch to Old Trafford.

"Good managers don't want to lose their best players and he is going to go on to be one of the great players"

Leeds manager David O'Leary on Rio Ferdinand

And O'Leary, speaking on the BBC, said he may not be able to prevent him leaving.

"They had a chance to buy him a couple of years ago and they didn't really fancy him and that made my job easier," O'Leary said.

"I don't want to lose him. I'm trying to build a team here. But if you start getting offered £40m I think that will be put to the plc and not me.

"Good managers don't want to lose their best players and he is going to go on to be one of the great players."

A report last month in the Daily Express claimed that Ferdinand had already signed a Manchester United contract and that the deal would be confirmed after the World Cup.

Manchester United have refused to comment on what they call "speculation".

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said that he wants to rebuild the team's defence this summer after a season in which their weakness at the back seriously hampered their pursuit of silverware.

Man Utd quiet on Ferdinand link
United have also been linked with moves for several other world-class defenders.

Juventus' France international Lilian Thuram, Argentina captain Roberto Ayala, who plays for Valencia, Italy's Alessandro Nesta and Kevin Hofland of PSV Eindhoven are among them.

Ferdinand moved to Elland Road from West Ham for £18m in November 2000.

He could reportedly earn around £60,000 per week at the start of the contract, which could increase to £110,000 if he sees out the deal.

Leeds need to offload some players, having spent £100m in the transfer market during the past four years, and O'Leary has been urged to sell four players this summer.

Olivier Dacourt is poised for a £16m switch to Lazio, while Lee Bowyer and Michael Duberry are also set to move.

Rumours persist that Manchester United will fund the deal for Ferdinand by selling Juan Sebastian Veron, for whom they paid a British record £28m last summer.

As long as a Veron was mentioned its all a lie! <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

Rio Ferdinand would be a quality buy, a young ENGLISH defender who was a rock against Argentina, calm at all times not a bad investment.

40m pounds <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

agree with mu77 40m no way <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

I reckon 25-29 million and he is ours, and apparently he wants to play for us! what would you lot think of him at that price?

hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm...... 25mil for him i think would be a good enough deal, not much of a bargain but hey we can't be picky.

O'Leary on the other hand is very likely to lose Ferdinad as well as Bowyer

DOL said nothing any other manager would not have said...if someone is to offer silly money it has to be put to the board....and Rio is no different.

The talk of a contract already being signed is too stupid for words.

Clearly it is the close season and newspapers need to have some shite to tell their readers...a bit like Roy Keane and his wife having personal problems.

I agree Marching, but I think Rio will have OT as his home ground next season. What do you reckon?

It all depends who you buy in the meantime, how much is on offer for Rio and what happens at ER next season.

It's next season (the season about to start in two month's time) I'm on about. I reckon we will sign Rio for about £25m after the world cup.

IMO it's £10m too much, but if we want Rio now, that's the price we would have to pay, because Leeds would want a profit on him. And I'm not too sure if Rio is THE man we need. It's not a good signing for Wes Brown, as he now needs a Steve Bruce-like partner. Rio is too similar too Brown IMO.

Leeds will not sell him for 25 million. There is a clause in his contract that he can't be sold unless a bid comes in that tops a certain amount...it is well and above 25 million.

I think you are forgetting also that Rio is Leeds captain and is already in all the advertising for Leeds' new kits next season not to mention their charity work etc.

Leeds also want to avoid ever selling a player to Man Utd again like the Cantona situation.

So it would defintely be more than 25 million to persuade Leeds to sell 1) their captain 2) their best defender 3) their most marketable player 4) a player they have had for less than two seasons.

The guy is incredible - £30 would be better spent on him than most of the other names that have been touted as potential summer signings for us.

I bet al those who laughed at o'leary at the time, are eating their words now. Alright ok, yeas, i was one of them!

In the Independent yesterday.

United in £30m bid to sign Ferdinand
By Alan Nixon
13 June 2002
Manchester United will test Leeds' resolve to hold on to Rio Ferdinand with a British record bid of around £30m in the next few days.

The Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon has been in secret talks with Leeds for weeks and will hope that the formal offer, which goes to the the Yorkshire club's plc, is acceptable. United had asked for an answer a fortnight ago and been told by Leeds that they needed time to consider the move for Ferdinand. In the absence of a satisfactory answer, United will now put it in writing and pile the pressure on the Elland Road board.

The bid would go a long way to wiping out Leeds' debts, although the downside is huge because of the bad feeling between the supporters of both clubs and the message it sends out about the size of their relative ambitions and bank balances.

Despite alleged interest from other clubs at home and abroad, Manchester United are the only outfit with genuine desire to sign Ferdinand.

The classy displays of Ferdinand at the highest level in the World Cup have marked him out as one of the best defenders in the modern game.

The Old Trafford manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has urged his directors to make every effort for Ferdinand and United are convinced that the 23-year-old's ambition, plus the prospect of playing in the Champions League next season, will tempt him to move. However there is still plenty of ground to cover, with the test being how far Manchester United will go with the bid and whether Leeds can afford to say no for long.

Indeed some of those close to Ferdinand are not optimistic that the transfer will go ahead. One leading source said last night: "It is still unlikely that Manchester United's valuation is big enough for Leeds."

United's move is not just ambitious but also desperate. Their other targets, France's Lilian Thuram and Italy's Alessandro Nesta, are proving difficult to sign. Thuram, whose age is also against him, has signalled that he would be prepared to stay at Juventus while Lazio's Nesta is wildly priced at £35m and may prefer to stay in Italy.

All quiet at the moment. The Independent article is interesting though because they rarely print total shite.

Oh come on Marching, you've always got Duberry as a replacement. Brilliant defender..... for a second rate team

;)

I dont think he will sell a lot of shirts so i doubt he will come.

How are Arsenal's finances?

Scariest thought right now is that Wenger could try and take Ferdinand to Highbury to replace Adams.

He also says theres some very bad news. Probably involving one of our big name players, but he seems reluctant to reveal on the forum.

Some of them say its Veron leaving, others think its Ruud to Real (exchange for Portillo?? Nah...) others think Giggs out, Duff in.

Whats the deal?

Nice to hear some comforting thoughts about Rio deal done and dusted though. Rio, Brown, G.Neville, Butt, Scholes, Beckham - thats the england team right there.

:( Poor Livvie, maybe next time someone will smile ;) Just kidding - one guy was hinting how it would be someone who's been in the papers alot lately and that no one would be too sad. That site has alot more rumours than this forum, that guy must have decent friends.

I can't think of anyone other than Dwight Yorke, and can't see it being him. I think I'd be pretty sad if it was anyone else. So who then?

There was talk of Roy Keane going to Elland Road, but can't see that happening, and everyone would be extremely sad.

Keano would never leave Old Trafford and stated before he signed his last contract that he could not join another English team.

As for Rio, It would be brilliant if he was to come to United, he is in my view the best center back in the would on his present form.

He has definatley got to come to old trafford if the price is right. In today's market £30 or around that figure would do it and be reasonable in my opinion. I remember many thinking he was not worth £18mill back then, if only we could have bought him at that price!!!
