Apparently we payed 26 million to Leeds for Rio, not 30 million. The additional 4 million is only payed if we win the treble and worthless cup twice in the next 5 years. This was done so that the headlines could read 30 million to satisfy the Leeds crowd.

Of which we only paid out £13 this summer - leaves a lot of money left in the kitty since we've made record profits (and qualified for the second round of the CL again).

Could explain Fergie's desire to progress. Maybe he wants to fool Leeds into thinking we're actually trying to win it ;)

Man Utd's chief executive, Peter Kenyon: "The board of Manchester United plc is pleased to announce that an agreement has been signed with Leeds United plc for the transfer of the registration of Rio Ferdinand to Manchester United FC. Ferdinand has agreed a five-year contract commencing immediately. The transfer agreement provides for a cash consideration, included associated costs of £29.1m - £14.9m payable immediately and £14.2m payable in July 2003. In addition further payments, up to a maximum of £4m, will be payable over the next five years depending on the team performance of Manchester United.

This was the official statement at the time. 29.1 plus 4 million in appearances. The telegraph have obviously got it wrong.

29.1 INCLUDING associated costs..

which probably means we'll pay 4 million if we win the treble and worthless cup twice in the next 5 years......

Add the costs...14+ paid now plus 14+ in July. It doesn't matter what the associated costs are...they're still paying 29.1 million.

The appareance stuff is in the 4 million appearances.

The telegraph got it wrong.

Telegraph are basing their story on information in Leeds plc accounts, so it's probably right. They are speculating about the conditions but the ammounts are in the accounts.

So that would mean 3 millions in associated costs!

But some of that probably came right down Rio's pocket, giving him approx 10% of the transfer money which seems a fair deal.
