Riise takes prestigious award ^top
John Arne Riise has been voted the best left-back in Europe for October by football journalists writing for leading football magazines.
The Liverpool and Norway star has been in sensational form during the past month, and that led to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Kicker and A Bola all recognising Riise as the best left-sided defender in Europe for the month of October.
The Reds have benefitted immensely from the Norwegian's fine performances as he grabbed the headlines with a brilliant goal against reigning Premiership champions Manchester United in the recent top-of-the-table clash.
Riise beat off the other candidates for the award as Robert Carlos (Real Madrid), Placente (Bayer Leverkusen), Vincent Candela (Roma) and Paolo Maldini (Milan) were all regarded as second best behind The Reds' new signing for this season.

So ChampsElect....best left back in the prem? I think so, don't you?

It's strange, I know well Riise as he played in the French championship (for Monaco) before going to Liverpool. He wasn't that great, but I remember a fantastic goal vs Bordeaux in 1999. And he could play at many positions. His free-kick vs us was great too. But I don't think he's better than Carlos or Candela...

His attacking skills are impressive when he's in form, but the same can be said about Ziege. And we all know what happened to him, don't we? Houllier wants a traditional LB, Vignal is bound to grab that place sooner or later.

Best LB in Europe, yeah right  This comes from the same people who said that Murphy is better than Becks? <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

This is all just because of that thunderbolt vs United.......which in all fairness was 'kin awesome.

First of all this comes from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Kicker and A Bola, secondly defensively Riise is more solid than Ziege and lastly in terms of the Beckham thing Thomoo said Murphy is Liverpools Beckham he did'nt say Murphy was better than Beckham

 No this was due to performance over October, its a player (more specifically left back) of the month award nobody is saying his the best left back in Europe period

Read the title again ..

But, what I'm saying is that THAT shot brought him attention. Same goes for a player doing feck all for 89 minutes, then bycyclekicks the ball in goal via both posts from 33 yards. That player will get high points from that match when he quite clearly doesn't deserve it.

BTW, I kinda remember Riise fecked up at United's goal at Anfield.

Good buy, though.

But that goal was in November not October, he alraedy got a lot of attention before that goal with goals aginst Newcastle, Bayern Munich, Everton and his performances over the month in the league and CL

Splitting hairs again, aren´t we? ;)

When the article is about something that interests me, I usually read the article without having a look at the headline.

Riise is good at attacking but horribly 'safe' in defending, where under circumstances where no striker is anywhere near him, he aims for the K Stand!

He obviously adheres to the Alan Hansen philosophy of "If in doubt, launch it".

I don't agree with that at all.
I think he is an excellent left back, he had gillespie in his pocket saturday and has yet to be badly exposed by anyone. He has pace and can tackle hard.

I do however believe his future lies in midfield...

score a goal against the champions usually gets you noticed by the press.

Like Shaun Goater last year? <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

well rumour has it that Pool are chasing Manchester Uniteds highly rated left back Mikael Silvestre so it seems Pool could do with strengthning their left back position
;)

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Even Leeds fans think that Harte is poor except at set pieces.

The troglodytes on here see someone score a good goal and they think he's the best thing since sliced bread. They'res more to being a good left back than hitting free kicks...I wish someone would tell Ian Harte that!!!

He's ok but not that special. He's a good player but not what you lot try to make out of him.

He was in doubt for the whole 90 minutes then! I still think he is a better midfielder than defender.

Can you name anyone better than him in the premiership??? and for god's sake don't say Ian Harte!!!!

I still believe Vignal is the better left back, but I have been impressed with Riise.

He might be the best in the PL but that doesn't say much as that is all the big clubs' worst position.

As.Cole/Silvestre/Harte/Riise/Le Saux(??) - nothing to write home about.

Well, let's hope he's finally going to play a decent game for Norway soon then...

Every time he's played LB for Norway, he's been a liability (poor positioning, panicking with the ball in his feet).

IMO, he's a much better midfielder. He's doing ok in your defense much because your midfield 4 and back 4 is very compact, with very little distance between them. You also leave little or no space behind your back 4.
In tactics like this it's easier to look good, as his weaknesses aren't as exposed as they would be if you played the attacking game...
