Utd must wait for Van Wolfswinkel

Manchester Utd must wait for Van Wolfswinkel - ESPN Soccernet

Sporting Lisbon forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel says he is flattered to have attracted interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea, but his agent insists no transfer will be agreed in January.

Van Wolfswinkel has been scouted by staff from Old Trafford in recent months, as the club identify potential attacking reinforcements.

The 22-year-old Netherlands international only moved to Portugal from Utrecht in the summer, but United have good links with Sporting - after agreeing deals for both Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani in recent seasons - and could use that to their advantage in negotiations.

Van Wolfswinkel is just happy that interest from big clubs shows he is doing the right things on the pitch.

"It is good that my name was linked to big clubs such as Manchester United and others in England, but I am really content and happy at Sporting," Van Wolfswinkel told radio station NOS. "Things are excellent in every sense. I play for a good club and I am scoring goals because I am taking this satisfaction on to the pitch."

His agent, Louis Laros, confirmed Premier League clubs have studied his client this season but does not see Van Wolfswinkel moving until the summer at the earliest.

"Chelsea and Manchester United have watched Ricky, like other young footballers in Europe, but I do not expect a possible deal in the January market," Laros said. "Nobody has spoken to me directly and Sporting are not interested in a deal at the moment. However, in the world of football, it is impossible to say never about a sale."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed last week that he is unlikely to spend in the next transfer window, saying he has "two or three" targets in mind but none is available so "there is no point even going there".

We don't need another striker, we have too many as it is.

True, but he's being touted as the next RVN. Would you really want us to miss out on him just because we have the likes of Owen, Macheda and Diouf on our books?

We can turn him into a central midfielder to partner Rooney!

I think I would prefer the 19 year old Italian, Manolo, who is the next big striker for Italy.

Looks like a great prospect, with the possibility of Owen & Berbatov being gone in the summer and possibly Macheda, it's good to see us looking for strikers.

Let's sort the midfielder issue first before we look at strikers ffs

We should never sit still, if there's a striker out there with the potential to be the best in the world then we should try to sign them even if right now we're well stocked

He also said we'd be permanently signing Tevez during his first season with us. Talk is cheap. You want to keep a player, sign a contract.

It is not a matter of signing a contract. Merely exercising the option to extend his contract by 12 months. Which he has already said he will do. It would be idiotic not to.

Manolo Gabbiadini?

Because searching for Manolo just comes back with a Spanish fashion designer.

Its all depend on whether SAF thinks Macheda/Berba has a future at OT. If they are sold + Owen/Diouf ends up where they belong to (away from OT) then we need a striker. It would be hilarious if we again give this position priority over CM though

SAF has come out and said he's renewing Berbatov's contract.

Not really renewing it, we just have an option with his current contract to extend it a year and Berbatov has no say in the matter.

Personally, my inner immature child, wants to sign him. Just so commentators are forced to say Wolfswinkel a lot.

Owen and Diouf may be off this summer, and even if Berba stays another year it will surely be one of his last with us. So good to see we are looking at future options.

I think it makes sense to keep berbatov if he's willing to take a wage cut. Id imagine his wages to be pretty high right now.

Sign him up, he's already got the scoring against City nack

Premier League clubs will be on alert after Ricky van Wolfswinkel's contract extension talks with Sporting Lisbon suffered a hitch.

The Dutch striker has enjoyed a fine first season in Portugal since his £4.5million switch from Utrecht last summer.

The 23-year-old fired 20 goals in all competitions, taking Sporting all the way to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

That has prompted talk of a new deal for Van Wolfswinkel in order to increase the release clause in his contract, but those discussions have stalled.
Both Manchester United

and Manchester City

are thought to be tracking the Holland international and the lack of progress could open the door for a bid.
Waiting

The player's agent Louis Laros admits there could be time for a late move as no deal has yet been done.

"We are waiting for Sporting," Laros told Portuguese newspaper Record.
"There is still no progress in increasing the value of the buy-out clause that the club want to include.

"I have heard rumours in the media about interest in the player from foreign clubs."

Manchester City know all about Van Wolfswinkel after he scored an important away goal at the Etihad Stadium to help eliminate Roberto Mancini's men from the Europa League in March.
