Probably nothing, just another name on the list? Several stories floating around about him but nothing more...

Man Utd threaten Arsenal hopes of Ricky Alvarez deal | Premiership News | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United rival Arsenal for Velez Sarsfield ace

According to reports Manchester United are interested in Velez Sarsfield star Ricky Alvarez.

It seems United are muscling in on Arsenal’s moves to land the midfielder.

It is understood that Gunners representative Richard Law was in Argentina last week for talks with Velez officials over a deal for Alvarez.

However, Ole says United have also made contact with Velez about a price for the 23 year-old.

Alvarez has been likened to Real Madrid star Kaka and Velez have informed both Arsenal and United that it will take £10 million to secure his signature.

Arsenal Transfer Prospects: Analyzing the Pros and Cons of Signing Ricky Alvarez
Arsene Wenger has been quoted as saying that he will be travelling to South America for the summer and that he will likely watch some players while he is there. Arsenal were linked with the signing of Ricky Alvarez a few weeks back and it was reported on some websites that he was available on a free transfer. However, it has since emerged that he still has a contract with Velez and the club are demanding a sizeable fee for the signing of the midfielder.

In the past, Arsenal have actively scouted players from around the world, and a number of talented players have been signed at cheap prices by way of this practice. Arsene Wenger has helped develop many youngsters into quality players, and although not many South American players have played for the club, it is of little surprise that the Gunners have been scouting players in the continent.

Though the leagues in Brazil and Argentina are not closely followed internationally, a number of world-class players, including the likes of Ricardo Kaka, Angel di Maria and Robinho, have played in their native leagues before succeeding in Europe. Some South American footballers are technically gifted and possess a lot of flair in their style of play. Arsenal’s neat passing game would suit these players better than most other teams in the EPL, and the Gunners should target players who can make a difference to the side.

Arsenal have been linked with a number of wingers, including the likes of Gervinho and Eden Hazard, in the last few weeks. If Samir Nasri signs a new contract and Cesc Fabregas stays with the club for the next season, then Nasri and Theo Walcott—who had a good season—are the most probable players to start on the flanks. With Arshavin likely to stay at the club after his recent comments, there is decent depth in this department.

Should Arsene Wenger take a gamble on Ricky Alvarez?
hough Arshavin is one of the most creative players at the club as his statistics prove, he is no longer the world-class player he was when he signed with the club in 2009. He has been benched a number of times this season but retains the ability to create and score goals when he is on the pitch. However, it is important to have a quality wide player who can take over for the Russian captain in the next season.

Though one cannot depend entirely on YouTube videos to judge a player, not many would have seen his games for Velez in Argentina. It is important that Wenger signs a young wide player this summer who can bring in quality and also be an integral player of the first team in the future.

Advantages
The youngster has been impressive for Velez this season and has been important to the club in recent years. Alvarez has excellent technique and good crossing ability. He can play as a left winger or as an attacking midfielder. He is 6’ 2” and looks strong enough to cope with the physicality of the Premiership.

Though Alvarez has not been prolific for Velez, he has an excellent shooting range, and some of his goals have been absolute screamers. He looks to be comfortable on the ball with either foot, though he is stronger with his left foot—an advantage, considering that Arsenal do not have a left-footed winger on their squad.

Ricky Alvarez
If a player of the quality of Eden Hazard is available at a price that is affordable for the Gunners, then Arsene Wenger is likely to sign the Belgian winger. However, it is unlikely that French champions Lille will sell their star winger for a cheap price. Furthermore, the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid will inflate player prices on the market. Although the signing of a winger like Stewart Downing provides a relatively safe option, Ricky Alvarez has shown a lot of flair and could turn out to be an excellent player for the Gunners should he adjust well in the Premiership.

Disadvantages
The obvious disadvantage to signing a player like Alvarez is his price tag, which has been set quite high by Velez. It would be a huge gamble for Wenger to pay around £10 million to sign the tricky winger. Also, the manager and the player would come under scrutiny if Alvarez would sign with Arsenal and have an indifferent start to his season—which is possible, considering that he has never played in Europe.

He suffered a cruciate ligament injury which kept him out for quite some time in 2008, and though he has recovered completely, there is a chance that he could sustain further injuries due to the physicality of the Premiership. Also, Alvarez might be frustrated by the lack of opportunities at the club in his first year because he will be behind the likes of Arshavin, Nasri and Walcott, and could get his opportunities only in the cups.

I saw this story yesterday and did the only reasonable thing......looked his vid up on youtube.

Natural leftie with good pace and balance, looks a bit lightweight though.

He looks good in that video, eh, Devil? Dunno why you'd call him lightweight though, he looks strong under pressure if anything.

Maybe it was just the slightness of his frame, although Giggs should serve me as a lesson in that judgment. He does look decent though, rapid off the mark and good delivery with his left. Obviously need to see more but a genuine left footed winger in the squad would be welcome.

Agent confirms Man Utd, Arsenal in Velez Sarsfield talks for Alvarez | Premiership News | tribalfootball.com
The agent of Velez Sarsfield star Ricky Alvarez has confirmed the interest of Arsenal and Manchester United.

Arsenal have been in talks with Velez for the attacking midfielder since the end of last season - and United made contact just last week.

Marcelo Simonian told Calciomercatoweb.it: "The boy is liked by Arsenal and Manchester United, but Italy appears to be in a position of advantage.

"Ricky would certainly be happy there."

He's played as a centre mid both times I've seen him, very disciplined, smart user of the ball and a willing worker if somewhat naïve defensively.

I'm not sure, I wouldn't have thought so no, though it's very hard to judge from South American games as roles are more loosely defined and often intertwine. He was much more in the Anderson ilk - strong short passing, combative presence with the ability to break from deep with dribbling - rather than a deep-lying playmaker in the Scholes ilk. Depends what we're looking for or need in midfield. As I said it's just from two games though.

Good point on the South American teams playing with looser systems than we do in our league, or indeed in most European leagues, for instance that kid Pato Rodriguez that was linked with us the other day, he's supposed to be a midfielder but I am certain from what I saw that he'd be deployed as a wide player in most European teams.

As for what we need, I'm as unsure as you, it seems Carrick will remain as the first choice holder, but he has worked well with a player who likes to push on in Giggs and Anderson, and also with a deep lying play maker in Scholes latter years.

IMO he seems he can operate like a Giggs, as a left sided playmaker.

Personally I think it might be best for us to bring in a wide play maker and partner Carrick with a Keane/Essien type.

Pato Rodriguez is an interesting one too, our name has been linked with him quite a bit in the last few days and most of it has actually been coming from Argentina. I've read people say that we've had negotiations with the club and his father, as well as a £8m fee being rumoured. He's certainly highly thought of by some of their fans. However, I don't use twitter and don't have an account so not sure how valid the reports are from those people in Argentina.

Great replacement for Nasri;)

Think he's maybe a replacement for Rosicky to be honest; creative, ball-carrying midfielder who can put in a tackle or a wide player with vision and dribbling.

Reading the last post in a thread you're about to post in? Don't be ridiculous.
