FABIEN BARTHEZ has been blasted by Ricardo in the row now simmering between the two rival Manchester United keepers.

Barthez claimed last week he did not know why boss Alex Ferguson had bought Ricardo and dismissed him as a threat to his first-team place.

But the Spanish international has hit back by claiming Barthez "is not God" and has yet to prove himself at Old Trafford.

Ricardo rapped: "Barthez is just a regular goalkeeper like myself. He's not God, he's only human. And Mr Ferguson knows we're only human and not perfect machines.

"Barthez is good and it is a great achievement to help win the World Cup. But he hasn't proved anything yet during his time at Manchester United.

"I know there have been some reports that Barthez has said he doesn't understand why Manchester United signed me.

"But it does not concern me. I am interested only in my career and family, not with other people."

When Barthez's claims were first put to Ricardo ahead of his full debut against Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League last Tuesday, he was full of scorn.

Ricardo, 30, stated: "Maybe Barthez is upset because I will face Maccabi and he has not travelled."

Then, in a clear warning to the French international, he spelled out why he signed for United from Real Valladolid for £1.5million - and it was certainly not to play second fiddle.

He added: "I came to Manchester to be THE goalkeeper some day and I am not going to get nervous now because of his words."

The Frenchman's dismissive remarks appeared last weekend.

Barthez, 31, said: "Ricardo's presence does nothing to concern me. I don't know why he was signed, certainly not to take my place. There is no competition from him."

Ricardo conceded three goals against Maccabi and Barthez will take over for today's visit of Southampton.

Now we have some real competition, lets get it on!

Seriously they both have a point, Barthez is most cerainly not god and Ricardo is most ceratinly not any real threat to his place, Ricardo is nothing more than a new RVG. That said we did not need to sign him in the first place, Barthez was back as soon as he signed and Carroll was doing fine!

I don't know how much weight to put on those claims, sounds too much like something the sun would like to construe. Nothing better than bitter rivalry within the ranks of the world's biggest football team to sell papers...

Exactly. Barthez NEVER said that he didn't know why Ricardo had been signed (on the contrary, he explained that it was because he was injured and the board feared an operation) and he never said he didn't rate Ricardo. The News of the World has dishonestly distorted an interview given in France by Fab (he never speaks to the British press anyway, and I understand him). I do have this interview.

This story has been built by the News of the World, and now Ricardo hits back at him...May be his words are distorted too...It's depressing to see how the British press can (and is probably happy to) create problems between players.

:(

Hmmmm, if it's true, it cannot be so good for the team spirit? Rows between players are never good.. :(

If it's more than paper talk, I don't think Ricardo has been here long enough to spout off.

Needs the two players to do something publicly if it's all media hype.

i think it has been established in earlier thread about Barthez's news from last week that players can actually talk to each other and clear the air out and do not really need to vent their feelings thru the press.

i have to agree with the others about their comments being distorted.

United is the last place i can imagine having players abusing each other like this - let alone players of the same position competing for a first team place.. we are a rotation squad and they all know their places very well when they signed for the club.

I have the original interview, given in France 3 weeks ago by Barthez. I know what he has said. Some quotes have been distorted, and others created by the News of the World to create scandal. BTW, he never abuses other players, and he thinks that keepers have to show solidarity.

This story digusts me and makes me angry.

It's not "if", it's media hype. Believe me. But this media hype could create real problems.

And even if they do something together, the press will say that Fergie has forced them to do it ...

good point about the press.

but still, i think the real problems will not be there as long as these two talk to each other at practice everyday.. they have to train together don't they?

if there isn't a problem..then there isn't a problem... they'll know about what each other's said and the role of the press in the whole matter..........iam sure.

Sir Alex today :

"It is absolute nonsense" . "There is nothing in it whatsoever.

"The problem comes when the players are on international duty. Between whatever they say and the interpretation of it, it always comes back misconstrued or mischievously interpreted a different way and that can cause embarrassment.

"Last year we had it with Mikael Silvestre and stuff that was supposed to be coming from him when he was in France. It happens to other clubs as well but there is definitely no truth in it."

This is exactly what I said.
:D

End of this "affair".

Carroll did very well by the sounds of it, earned his clean sheet.

May be he was injured...Fab shouldn't have been on the bench tonight, he was playing yesterday.

Would have seemed more logical to have Ben Williams on the bench or something.

Nevertheless, I doubt there's anything sinister about it.
