Haven't played the others but COD4 is great. Make sure you are connected to the net to get the best out of it - online multiplayer.

I read online that the port over to the PS3 was rubbish, had a fair few bugs, and lagged during the game - it put me off buying it for the PS3.

For single player it has to be Orange box, if you're online then COD4 multiplayer is great.

Resistance has both decent SP and MP but for SP only the Orange box is much, much better IMO

The escape from Chernobyl mission got pretty boring for me, especially reading from a certain guide that you can hide in the bottom corner of a ticket booth for the whole thing and take no damage whatsoever. The game itself is quite short though if you think about it.
