United’s Reserves made it five wins out of seven pre-season games with a 2-0 victory in torrential rain at Morecambe on Monday night.
Danny Drinkwater and Jesse Lingard, with his fifth goal of pre-season, were the Reds’ scorers in front of a crowd of 2,912 at Globe Arena.
There was a surprise late addition to the United starting line-up in the form of Togolese midfielder Souleymane Mamam, who joined the Reds in 2003 but left for Royal Antwerp four years later without having made an appearance.
After a tepid first half, Morecambe twice went close to opening the scoring in a frantic start to the second period, Lewis Alessandra hitting the post with a header and Nick Fenton seeing his header cleared off the line.
After that reprieve, Warren Joyce’s men took the lead in the 58th minute when Drinkwater ran onto a ball down the left, broke through the Shrimps’ defence and hit an angled drive past substitute keeper Shaun Routledge.
And Lingard doubled the lead five minutes later after collecting a pass from John Cofie.
The home side, who kick off their League Two season on Saturday, battled hard but United’s extra fitness told and Joyce was able to make six substitutions after the break.
United's next friendly is on Monday 8 August, away at Welsh outfit Llanelli.
United: Kuszczak (Johnstone 46), Vermijl (Lonsdale 68), McGinty, Norwood, M.Keane, Fryers, Mamam (Lingard 53), Drinkwater, W.Keane (Giverin 90), Petrucci (Cole 53), Cofie (Leao 84).
