Reserves: United 3 Oldham 0

United strolled into the semi-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup at the expense of Oldham Athletic.

Josh King extended his fine run of goalscoring form with a first-half brace, before Bebe rounded off the scoring just after the hour mark.

Davide Petrucci made his long-awaited return from injury as a substitute for the final half hour and caught the eye, while fellow sub Jack Barmby also helped enliven a second half which lulled for long periods.

United dominated the first half, and took an early lead when Gabriel Obertan chalked up yet another assist by squaring for King to slide home from close range.

Operating with a front three of Obertan, King and Bebe, with Ravel Morrison handed a roaming role, United repeatedly got behind the visitors' full-backs early on, while Oliver Norwood and Robbie Brady dominated central midfield.

Oldham packed the central areas wherever possible, however, and withstood plenty of pressure in relative comfort, although Bebe's powerful shot drew a superb save from goalkeeper Dean Brill.

The Latics twice came close to drawing level late in the first half, as Connor Hughes' free header went wide and Warren Feeney couldn't turn in a teasing cross, before King struck the killer blow.

Anders Lindegaard's quick throw released King, who fed Obertan before making for the area. Obertan sprinted past his full-back and squared, before King rifled home an unerring finish.

The second period began in disjointed fashion, and the first sustained show of quality resulted in the game's final goal. Obertan again claimed the assist, releasing Bebe behind the Latics' defence, and the Portuguese smashed home a low finish from the edge of the area.

The goalscorer was immediately withdrawn and replaced by Petrucci, who has been out of action since late January 2010 with a longstanding pelvic injury. The highly-rated Italian soon set about showcasing his wares with a fine half-hour of midfield playmaking.

At the other end, Lindegaard was soon forced into two smart stops, repelling powerful efforts from Ryan Brooke and Medi Abalimba, while Feeney came closest to reducing the arrears when his header was cleared off the line.

As Oldham tired, however, United enjoyed a series of late chances. King was denied a spectacular third goal when Brill magnificently tipped the Norwegian's curling effort onto the crossbar, while the lively Barmby and Obertan both fired just wide of the target from inside the area.

United: Lindegaard; Vermijl, R Brown, Gill (McGinty), Fabio; Norwood, Brady (Barmby), Morrison; Bebe (Petrucci), King, Obertan.
Subs not used: Devlin, Giverin.

Thanks a bunch as always, G2.

King and Gaby looking too good for the reserves as per, Ravel seemed to work his socks off and Barmby looks like a player. Btw, why do the MUTV graphics have us down as the away side?

I think it was an away fixture, but agreed to be played at Carrington. Similar to the 0-8 Bury game I'm guessing.

Around 30 seconds yes. I am no longer a knobhead!

Looked like my post in previous thread helped the removal of your tagline :p

Anyways top work again mate, King should play part against Crawley.

Thanks for the vid. Anyone know when the next reserve match is - blatantly curious because it may be when Tony V. may plays next.
