Interesting to see Diego playing for the reserves with Ruud being injured.....

Also note that Madds Timm is on the bench.

From manutd.com:

Diego Forlan will start for United Reserves as they take on Birmingham City's second team on Thursday night.

Diego, who grabbed four great goals on his last outing for Mike Phelan's side, will partner Daniel Nardiello upfront at Altrincham's Moss Lane ground.

In midfield, Quinton Fortune lines up alongside Luke Chadwick, Danny Pugh and Kieran Richardson - who scored a belter of a goal against Blackburn last week.

Spanish international Ricardo keeps goal once again, and will be hoping that his impressive performances for the Reserves this season will catch the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Birmingham name ex-United youngster Jovan Kirovski in their line-up, meanwhile, along with first team stars Curtis Woodhouse and Olivier Tebily. City manager Steve Bruce may well be in attendance to see how his charges get on.

Kick off at Moss Lane is at 19:00, and MUTV will screen the match exclusively live.

Teams:

United: Ricardo; Lynch, Tate, May, Rankin; Chadwick, Pugh, Richardson, Fortune; Nardiello, Fortune.
subs: Roche, B Williams, Fox, Timm, Johnson.

Birmingham: Bennett; Beauchamp, Tebily, Grondin, Woodhouse; Hughes, Carter, Hutchinson, Kirovski; Fagan, Evans.
subs: Parker, Allen, Barrowman, Davies, Capaldi.

Fantastic news that Timm has made the reserves bench! I hope he comes on! We're going to hammer them with that line up.

i wouldnt say hammer them neil. Brucey has got his teams playing with a lot of determination.
Bennets a good keeper too.

Very good offensively, but who is going to play a holding role in midfield?.

The manutd.com does team given out does not always read the same as the actual line-up so things may change.

Looking forward to a great evening.
Comments after the match .

5-0 was our last result with substantially the same team. Not sure why Rankin is playing left back - that would surprise me.

Looking at that line up, if those start I'd expect Pugh as left back and Rankin in centre mid - he's the holding midfielder.

Just got in, its 0-0 after 23 minutes. I'll let you know what the side is after I've worked it out.

Pugh makes a great run down the middle, feeds Forlan on the right, but too many defenders in front of him, ball bounces back to Richardson who hits a lovely shot but just over the bar near the top corner.

It was a goalhangers goal after a few shots had been deflected out, a deflected cross came in and Forlan was there to convert.

Ok, Forlan in his last reserve game had scored 3 by now, but 1 in the first half hour ain't bad, and 4 in 2 games.

This appears to be how they've lined up:

Ricardo
Roche May Tate Rankin
Chadwick Fortune Richardson Pugh
Forlan Nardiello

Didn't know that Fortune could play centre mid, and Rankin could play left back.

Cheers 26.

Its a very fluid team, swapping positions just like the first team does. Forlan plays all over the park, amazed then that he was goalhanging for his goal!

Fortune takes a poor corner from our left.

Nardiello in the box, but the defender makes a good tackle as he shapes to cross.

Short corner by Fotune, played back to him, tries to get space to cross but its pressed out for a throwin. We lose possession from the throw in. Ricardo has to come out of his area, control the ball, and kick it out - Barthez style.

I guess a lot of you haven't seen Ricardo yet. He's a left footer, can play the ball, not afraid to come out, terrific shot stopper and diving, seems very confident and assertive.

HT 1-0 United, Forlan the scorer. Just simply put it in with a right foot volley from a couple of yards out.

Wish I hadn't missed the first 18mins but the commentators implied that Birmingham had started the brighter. Its been a fairly open game, but with both team counter attacking each other.

Brum played the better football in the first twenty minutes with crisp first touch passing and some very perceptive through balls making good use of the flanks particularly down the left. They closed down Utd immediately when they lost the ball and forced Utd into poor passes. Ricardo made several very good saves to keep us in the game. 23 minutes a rare break from Utd and Nardiello was through but a bad first touch and a weak shot wasted the opportunity. Nardiello does not impress me.
24 minutes John Rankin gets booked for a daft tackle from behind. Utd were now getting a hold on the game first Forlan then Richardson on the rebound went close on 25 minutes. From the clearance Alan Tate intercepted in his own half and made a great break forwards(A La Vieira) gave a lovely pull back to Chadwick whose shot was blocked out to Nardiello who crossed in low and Diego had a tap in. 1-0 United. Fortune, May Tate and Ricardo playing well.

Nardiello scores after some nice team play, Lynch uns down the middle plays a one two with Chadwick before cutting it back to Nardiello who scrambles it past the two central defenders and shoots past the keeper.

Thats 3 goals in 6 games for Nardiello this season, not a bad goal average, much better than Heskey's career average for example. :D ;)

United playing the ball around their area, keeping possession very well, moving the ball across the midfield from side to side with short passes. Nardiello plays in Chadwick, but he's off balance and doesn't really get a proper shot off.

BTW I think Lynch has actually been at right back and not ROche - the ManUtd.com lineup was wrong.

Tate really likes to come out of defence with the ball, I'm really impressed with him.

Forlan crosses from the left after a great run and Nardiello hits the shot which Ricardo saves well.

Mads Timm is coming on for Chadwick!

Forlan comes off (after 65mins) to be replaced by Eddie Johnsen who's also excelled in the U17's, for his debut. Forlan I guess might feature in our next first team game.

No. But for an amateur you're doing a great job. Thanks! :)

Nardiello wins a penalty with a run into the box where the defender slides in and totally misses the ball taking out Nardiello - clear penalty.

Nardiello blasts it into the bottom corner, unsaveable. United 3 Birmingham 0

Mads Timm showing his ability with a lovely dribble past a couple of defenders, laying it off when he needed to and getting in a good position afterwards. Just showing a little flash of what he can do. I'm so glad he's playing in the reserves again, didn't really know he had previously, to Bradford 2 seasons ago! He's only 16! But he missed most of last season with an injury. You wouldn't know it. He's strong and fast, totally comfortable on the ball, an eye for goal with an accurate shot, great control and technique - I really think he's going to be the star of the future United side.

What I like about the reserves style of play is the short passing style, keeping possession, playing it out from the back, laying it off when necessary, and taking players on, with lots of crosses.

fecking hell! Mads Timm just did a run that compares with Giggs's run for THAT goal! Awesome talent. I lost count of the number of players he went past before he fashioned an opening and got off a shot, which unfortunately was off target. I haven't seen a run like that for a long time! He's normally a better finisher than that too, prolific in the U17's.

Ricardo comes dribbling out of the area, past the striker, who then clatters into him from behind, Ricardo going down, but after a bit he gets back up. Fortunately he's alright.

FT United 3 - Birmingham 0
Forlan, Nardiello, Nardiello pen

Another clean sheet for Ricardo, another Forlan goal and a brace for Nardiello, and an awesome substitute return by Mads Timm, and debut for Eddie Johnson.

Its an interesting style of play, there's no real ball winner, but a solid defence, particularly the triangle of Ricardo, May and Tate. The possession comes though from short passes, backwards if necessary, but with good movement and creative players who can run with the ball. Its very good to watch.
