Starting this early because the venue's changed - now being held at Moss Lane, Altrincham's ground. Just in case anyone was planning on going and hadn't already seen.

Highlights on MUTV on Friday I believe.

Ben Amos and captain James Chester return to an otherwise unchanged United reserve side for tonight’s Manchester Senior Cup tie meeting with Bolton Wanderers at Altrincham’s Moss Lane.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named pretty much his strongest possible side for the visit of Bolton as United look to make it three wins out of three in the competition and take a huge step towards qualification for the final as they seek to defend the trophy they won against the same opposition at Old Trafford back in May.

With Ben Foster being considered for first team action at Celtic next week, Ben Amos replaces him for his first reserve appearance in quite some time, first-team and England U19 duty having occupied him for much of the last month. Centre-half Chester returns after missing the last three games due to the injury that forced him off against Wigan at the start of October - he takes the place of Rafael da Silva (in action for the first-team last night of course), with either David Gray or Corry Evans shifting to right-back.

Elsewhere, the five-man midfield that so dominated against City last week will continue, with Manucho once more leading the line. There’s a place on the bench for Academy centre-back Scott Wootton, who will take his seat alongside Ron-Robert Zieler, Magnus Eikrem, Jimmy Derbyshire and Anton Bryan.

No Bolton team news as yet, there’s no live coverage on MUTV either so keep an eye on the RedCafe reserves/youth forum for updates and check back here later this evening for a full report. To remind anyone who missed the news, tonight’s game is at Moss Lane in Altrincham rather than the usual venue of the Marstons Arena at Northwich, where there have been problems with the floodlights this week.

United: Amos; Gray, C Evans, Chester, Eckersley; Gibson, Drinkwater, Possebon, Hewson, Cleverley; Manucho.
Substitutes: Zieler, Derbyshire, Eikrem, Wootton, Bryan.

I wonder how we're getting on. I'd like to see manucho get off the mark too - he's done well in both appearances so far.

PS18 or Mr MUJAC help us saddos and give us the result and a match report?

TOM Eckersley was the hero after Wanderers reserves sealed a sudden-death penalty shootout victory against Manchester United.

The big defender held his nerve to ensure Alan Cork’s side sealed a second successive spot-kick victory in the Manchester Senior Cup at Altrincham’s Moss Lane ground.

Neither side had managed to break the deadlock in 90 minutes – and it looked as if nothing would separate the two sides in a marathon 20-penalty shootout.

At 7-7, Whites keeper Adam Bogdan saved David Gray’s effort but Nathan Woolfe could not take advantage as he blazed over.

But, after one more successful kick each, United’s Antonio Bryan fired wildly over and Eckersley stepped up to score and help Wanderers maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition.

In a game switched to Altrincham due to a floodlight problem at United’s usual home ground at Northwich, the Reds’ Angolan striker Manucho and Bolton’s Danny Sissons both went close with headers before Bogdan produced a fine one-handed stop to keep out Manucho’s deflected effort.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’a team looked the more likely to break the deadlock and Sam Hewson missed a great opportunity from close range eight minutes after the restart. Bogdan, called into the full Hungary squad during the last round of internationals, then did well to tip over Cleverley’s shot.

But the visitors continued to hold their own and the impressive Sheridan, who was happy to try his luck whenever the opportunity arose, had the ball in the net on 70 minutes but the midfielder’s cool finish was ruled out for offside.

That sent the tie into penalties and, just as they had done against Manchester City, Wanderers came on top to stay third in the group – three points behind leader Oldham having played two games less.

Wanderers: Bogdan, Sinclair, Stokes, Sheridan, Eckersley, Basham, Burns, Sissons, Obadeyi (Ward 86), Campbell, Woolfe. Subs not used: Brocklehurst, Harsanyi, Gbemie, Carlisle

That report pretty much says it all. We were comfortably the better side all game but couldn't create enough, and didn't take the chances that did come our way. Bolton never really looked like scoring and I can't remember Amos having to make a save.

This formation doesn't convince me in games like this where the opposition gets plenty of men behind the ball and the emphasis is on us to make the running - lots of creativity but not enough penetration out wide or support for Manucho, and at times the five midfielders all seemed to get in each other's way too often. In fairness to Ole it's not like he has many options available to him to change things right now.

For the record, Cleverley, Gibson, Hewson, Manucho, Chester, Eikrem, Evans, Gray (missed), Eckersley and Bryan (missed) took our penalties. It was an extremely high quality shootout, of the first 14 pens only Eikrem's was really saveable, Amos didn't really get near any of theirs. Gray's was weak and the keeper got down well to save it, Bryan's nearly broke the roof of the stand/shed behind the goal.

Disappointing result but we're still well placed to finish in the top two and make the final. Games against City and Stockport left, both away, the former in February, the latter still to be arranged.

So Possebon and Drinkwater out for Eikrem and Bryan it must be.

Strange line up last night. No real natural width in it. Suppose theres not many wingers at that level at the mo. Curran is only one I can think of. Also Brady in the academy. Any others?

Cameron Stewart. Ajose and King can do a job there. But it's very thin.

News on the street is that we may be playing all our home games at Atrincham for the remainder of the season.

Was wondering if that might be the case, the teamsheet last night had the Boro game at the end of November down as being there which would be one hell of a lengthy floodlight failure. Great news if true, Altrincham's so much more convenient (for me anyway).
