Dunfermline welcomed Manchester United to East End Park for this the team's third pre season friendly.. Andy Dowie, Paul Willis, Steven McDougall and Gary Mason came into the Pars starting eleven at the expense of Joe Cardle, Neil McGregor, Andy Kirk and Jordan White. Few teams in Britain achieve as much from youth academies as Manchester United and it was a pleasure to see Ole Gunnar Solksjaer bring such an array of rising stars at East End Park

Joshua King and Ravel Morrison got the match underway and in just 21 seconds KING stroked the ball past Chris Smith to open the scoring. Nichlos Ajose raced up the right and delivered a simple ball square into the Pars box. Two defenders collided leaving the 18 year old Norwegian striker an easy execution.

After the early setback Dunfermline found it hard to take the game forward. The opposition tidied up the through balls, won possession and laced together several good passes. Willis was wide right to get in a cross over but it was overstruck for the blustery conditions.

United moved out and when captain Magnus Eikrem lofted a ball from the centre circle up the right, AJOSE ran on and scooped the ball over the advancing keeper from an angle 20 yards out. Five minutes later Eikrem found the hole in the central defence to put KING through and place the ball into the bottom right. 3-0 down after 16 minutes.

Scott Wootton was yellow carded for his late tackle on David Graham in 19 minutes and the man in blue boots required physio Gerry Docherty's attention. Morrison was the next to storm through the defence and he got a lucky break that took the took the ball right to Ajose on the edge of the box but he blasted the ball into the McCathie Stand.

Smith held a long distance attempt from Norwood before Graham was forced to retire with Andy Kirk coming on in his place. The Pars first shot at goal in 28 minutes, a well struck effort by McDougall from 23 yards, was deflected wide but Willis's good delivery was palmed away by Conor Devlin.

Another Pars corner in 32 minutes was pumped in from the right by Willis but Keddie was blown up for climbing on a defender in his attempts to reach the cross. The visitors countered and had spare men as the ball was switched from King through Eikrem to Ajose wide. The ball was cut back to Rodrigo POSSEBON who was successful with a somewhat speculation drive from 30 yards.

Andy Kirk did well at the other end creating a shooting chance out of nothing on the 18 yard line but his shot whizzed just the wrong side of the left upright. The Pars were denied what would have been a bizarre penalty as the ball bounced up on to Joe Dudgeon's hand in the box but the referee wasn't looking.

In 41 minutes Dowie chipped the ball deep wide right for McDougall who laid it back for Woods to cross. That evaded Willis and Kirk on six yards and Phinn accepted but drove wide into the sidenetting. Then two minutes later the Dunfermline wall kept out a Eikrem free kick from 25 yards out in a central position.

Half Time: Dunfermline 0 Manchester United XI 4

Both teams made three changes for the second half. For Dunfermline off went keeper Chris Smth, captain Austin McCann and Steven McDougall to be replaced by Kyle Allison, Chris Higgins and Pat Clarke. Gary Mason took over the captain's armband. United withdrew Norwood, Morrison and King to introduce Cameron Stewart, William Keane and Robert Brady.

The new look Pars immediately made an impact with Willis heading over a Mason cross from the left and then Willis and Bell exchanging pases on the edge of the box in an attempt to break through. Bell headed a 51st minute Willis corner narrowly over the crossbar and next Phinn came close to penetrating the right side of the defence.

Willis sent in a great cross but Devlin tipped it away from Phinn as Dunfermline kept up the pressure. Phinn had a great chance in 59 minutes but Wootton's tackle 8 yards out stuck the ball behind for a corner. Bell came close as the corner was not immediately cleared and Devlin had to pounce on the loose ball that materialised.

The goal that Dunfermline deserved came from an Andy KIRK free kick in 63 minutes. The opposition wall was strung out across their penalty box but the Pars striker found the net regardless from 25 yards. Ryan Thomson replaced Steven Bell.

The game then went to sleep a bit but was rudely interupted in 83 minutes when a nice ball in from the left by Clarke looked to have set up Phinn but his low drive was pulled across goal and just slipped past the right goalpost. Two minutes later Man Utd made it 5-1 when Stewart's pass set up William KEANE. The young striker placed the shot low in the bottom left leaving Allison with little hope of stopping it.

Nice to see Morrison getting a run in the reserves, looks like this will be the year where he will make the step up from the youth to reserves. Reading that report it seems like Ajose and Possebon's goals were absolute peach, hope there are some videos of the goals(I doubt though)

Is that a full Dunfermline side? What level are they equivilant too in terms of the English leagues?

Yes, that was the first team.

If the Championship is comparable to much of the Scottish Premier League, perhaps bar Celtic and Rangers, then the Scottish First Division, of which Dunfermline are apparently one of the favorites for promotion, is probably comparable to the bottom of the Championship, at best, and likely much more so, League One.

They ended 3rd in the 2nd best scottish division last year so yeah - equivalent to a decent League 1 side. Which makes it a tremendous result - and another indication that these youngsters are something out of the ordinary. Clearly the most talented bunch we have had since the Beckham-generation

Only cautionary note I'd raise is that Dunfermline also got battered 4-1 in their last friendly against Scottish third tier side East Fife (and got hammered by Hibs the game before that as well), so they don't seem to be in a great state at the moment.

An impressive scoreline for a squad with an average age of just over 18.

I think we can view it in a few ways. Dunfermline might have lost the game prior but often you see a reaction. Also the scorers are no suprise. We play great football and it's no suprise a result like this though the scoreline doesn't tell the whole story

What we know is the reserve team will be great to watch because we have great young players and it's very pleasing.

Saw your post in the reserve/youths forum so I thought I could be a bit of help. If no one has already sent to you this should do the trick for you.

If an admin could move this to the Reserve/Youth Forum it would be appreciated as it's more relevant there.

Flash link appears to be broken atm.

The first link worked grand for me I never tried the second link.

Great find for the highlights.

Some great football played in the first half, and all the goals were well taken. Eikrem's pass for Ajose's lob was exceptionally good. Hopefully he can kick on from last season and get himself on the fringes of the first team or at least the Carling Cup squad.

Cheers for the highlights.

I love how simple Eikrem keeps things, his passing is so tidy. Morrison's control on the wing to set up the first was superb. Two cracking strikes from Possebon and Keane.

The passing was impressive at times, to watch the highlights you'd forget how young they where.

It's too bad that United weren't able to enter this side into one of the lower divisions such as Leagues One or Two. They play wonderful football and could really progress. I'm hoping that they keep as much of this side intact as possible as it could form the future nucleus of United.

Don't like that idea, firstly it'd kill lower league football, and secondly it'd put too much emphasis upon strength and winning. At 17 technique and tactics are far more important than being physically strong enough to beat a team of lower-league journeymen.

What we do need is a radical overhaul of reserve and academy leagues so that the academy players get regular matches.

Agree secondfig, I think the reserve league needs to be overhauled. I think it should involve all the Premiership sides in one division where they play 38 games. I know some of the smaller Premiership side may struggle with squad numbers, but it would help younger players to get more games and at more regular intervals.

In affect the reserve league could be a sort of B League.

the other clubs benefit when we loan someone to them as well as the kids sometimes as it changes their environment and it teaches you appriciation of what you have at united

Great to see the highlights, thanks to all involved. Some good football but you expect that. Dunfermline could have has a few more themselves
