Clyde set to face up to Man Utd side featuring the new Ronaldo

Oct 15 2009 By Hugh Keevins

THE player Sir Alex Ferguson hopes will be the new Cristiano Ronaldo is heading for Broadwood.

Superkid Gabriel Obertan, 20, is in the Manchester United team Fergie is sending north to face Clyde on Sunday in a game designed to raise vital funds for the cash-strapped Second Division basement boys.

Four hundred Red Devils fans have snapped up tickets but that could double after French starlet Obertan, signed from Bordeaux for £3million, sparkled on his debut against Oldham reserves on Tuesday.

Ole Gunar Solksjaer will manage United against Clyde and last night Broadwood director Frank Dunne said: "He has been on the phone to tell us Obertan and Rafael Da Silva will be in the squad."

Delighted

United and Clyde have a special relationship stretching back half a century.

Dunne said: "We first met in 1954 at our old ground, Shawfield. The legendary Duncan Edwards scored for United butwewon2-1."

Fergie, who served drinks to Clyde fans in his former Glasgow pub when the club was based in the city, said: "I'm delighted United have this opportunity to help Clyde by providing the opposition for this fund-raisier.

"Clyde is a special club for many people, myself included."

Dunne revealed Fergie keeps an eye on Clyde's progress when he said: "I was a guest at a Manchester derby at Old Trafford a few years ago.

"We played Arbroath the day before and I never imagined that would have entered Sir Alex's mind. But the first thing he said was,'That was a good 2-1 win for Clyde yesterday'."

And Clyde boss John Brown admitted he came close to signing for Fergie as a kid.

Bomber said: "I was with St Mirren's Boys' Club and I still remember scoring a hat-trick against Eastercraigs in a cup tie.

"I got a shock to discover Fergie was standing behind the goal, and an even bigger surprise when I found out he told his scouts to get me signed up for Love Street.

"The problem was I'd agreed the week before to begin my senior career at Hamilton.

"The players Ole will bring with him to face Clyde will be the United stars of tomorrow and they wouldn't be playing against us if Sir Alex didn't think it was good for their development."

"He is the top boss of all time and we have to be grateful to him for sending a team to attract a crowd.

"Walter Smith did the same for us with Rangers 18 months ago and the club pocketed £60,000 from the gate.

Hopeful

"Unfortunately, that money had to go straight to the bank to reduce debt and keep the wolf from the door.

"This time I'm hopeful I can raise the cash to get a couple of experienced players on loan in January to help keep my youngsters in the division because relegation would be a disaster."

So guys tell me which channel and what time this match will be broadcasted and I shall try my best to have the same capped so that we can see the entire match..

The more the channels the higher the likely chance that I can get it capped!

We can hope it's on tv but I don't think it's certain. We might get highlights eventually. Obviously I hope i'm completely wrong and it's live but we'll see

Ok anyway if anyone finds out if it is online send me a pm and i shall be on it in a flash..

Sean McGinty is travelling with the squad. His first time with the reserves

I'll have a look but to be honest I doubt it. I think the best we can hope for is highlights on mutv sometime.

Pity we never got to see this. Hopefully we'll get some indepth reports later.

Friendly: Clyde 0 United 4

18/10/2009 19:57, Report by Amir Rashid

Rafael's comeback continued on Sunday with 90 minutes and a goal as a strong United XI selected by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eased to a 4-0 victory at Clyde.

The hosts have had financial difficulties in recent times and Sir Alex Ferguson promised to send a squad packed with United hopefuls to the Broadwood Stadium, to help raise funds for the Scottish Second Division side. Zoran Tosic and summer signing Gabriel Obertan, making his second appearance for the Reds, were also noticeable starters.

The last time United faced Clyde was four years ago when a full-strength side ran out 5-1 winners. The man helming the Reds in the dugout may have been different this time round but Solskjaer's young guns enjoyed the same margin of victory as Sir Alex's men.

The visitors got off to a good start and controlled the pace and tempo of the game from the outset. Early on, the lively Tosic set up Brandy who beat goalkeeper Callum Reidford but unfortunately saw his effort cleared off the line by Connor Cassidy. The first goal came moments later when Clyde midfielder Paul Stewart’s miscued shot ended up in his own net following a low corner from Tosic.

Obertan showed glimpses of why he could be a shrewd signing, impressing with his speed and touch, not to mention his assists for United’s next two goals. For the first, he showed a good turn of pace to skip past his marker and run powerfully at the Clyde defence before sliding the ball across the box for Brandy to turn and score.

After the break the Frenchman grew in confidence and slid a delightful ball through for Rafael who charged up from his right-back position into the area and released a stinging shot low across the keeper that struck the inside of the post before going in.

Clyde posed little threat going forward and both Reece Brown and Oliver Gill looked assured in the heart of United's defence. Magnus Eikrem rounded off a good day for the Reds by scoring from the spot one minute from time, after Scott Gair had handled in the box.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with his side’s performance, on an important day for Clyde.

“We did well and played good football at times. Maybe we should have scored a few more goals but then again they could have had a couple of goals in the second half.

“It’s very important for us to come here - we have a good relationship with Clyde. The gaffer knows the people up here and he said that it was important that we came, performed well and show what Manchester United can be about. There was a quite a decent crowd here today so hopefully they have got some money in.”

United XI: Amos (Zieler 45); Rafael, R Brown (Evans 45), Gill, Dudgeon (McGinty 80); Norwood (Stewart 45), Hewson (Eikrem 45), James, Tosic; Obertan (Cofie 62), Brandy.

And from a newbie:
Obertan played 60 mins, showed nice skill, pace and touches, linked really well with Rafael down the right. didn't look keen in tackling but maybe was just wanting to play his way back into football without any setbacks. Tosic was prominent throughout with his pace & trickery. Best of the rest were Rafael, Brandy & James.

He looks quite a prospect, I hope they push him straight up to the reserves instead of messing around in the under 18s.

With Chester and Cathcart injured and out on loan - I would assume both Wootton and McGinty will get their chances in the reserves

He's only 16 and still settling in. You don't get many 16 year old centre backs playing reserve football and he hasn't impressed enough yet for me to merit a promotion ahead of Wootton or Thorpe.

Reece Brown is also an option for the reserves at centre back, not excluding Corry Evans, De Laet and Oliver Gill.

Haven't seen too much of him, but he was good in the Milk Cup. He was playing in the reserves for Charlton last season at 15 I believe too.

Less competition to play in the Charlton reserve side, and a weaker league to play in (with all respect to Charlton). Don't think McGinty's been especially impressive yet (think Thorpe's looked better personally), although that's mainly down to not getting to play too much due to internationals. Certainly don't think some serious game-time in the U18s would be 'messing around' anyway.

Showed the goals from this game on "Live From OT" today. Can't cap it myself.

If anyone has MUTV and can Cap, maybe they will and get the highlights on to YouTube. It is on again at 8pm and 10pm.

They only showed the goals, the highlight being a cracking own goal by a Clyde player. Brandy took his goal well and it was a nice move and finish for Rafael's goal. The penalty was extremely harsh but well put away by Eikrem on a stuttering run up, sending the keeper the wrong way.
