THE player Sir Alex Ferguson hopes will be the new Cristiano Ronaldo is heading for Broadwood.
Superkid Gabriel Obertan, 20, is in the Manchester United team Fergie is sending north to face Clyde on Sunday in a game designed to raise vital funds for the cash-strapped Second Division basement boys.
Four hundred Red Devils fans have snapped up tickets but that could double after French starlet Obertan, signed from Bordeaux for £3million, sparkled on his debut against Oldham reserves on Tuesday.
Ole Gunar Solksjaer will manage United against Clyde and last night Broadwood director Frank Dunne said: "He has been on the phone to tell us Obertan and Rafael Da Silva will be in the squad."
Delighted
United and Clyde have a special relationship stretching back half a century.
Dunne said: "We first met in 1954 at our old ground, Shawfield. The legendary Duncan Edwards scored for United butwewon2-1."
Fergie, who served drinks to Clyde fans in his former Glasgow pub when the club was based in the city, said: "I'm delighted United have this opportunity to help Clyde by providing the opposition for this fund-raisier.
"Clyde is a special club for many people, myself included."
Dunne revealed Fergie keeps an eye on Clyde's progress when he said: "I was a guest at a Manchester derby at Old Trafford a few years ago.
"We played Arbroath the day before and I never imagined that would have entered Sir Alex's mind. But the first thing he said was,'That was a good 2-1 win for Clyde yesterday'."
And Clyde boss John Brown admitted he came close to signing for Fergie as a kid.
Bomber said: "I was with St Mirren's Boys' Club and I still remember scoring a hat-trick against Eastercraigs in a cup tie.
"I got a shock to discover Fergie was standing behind the goal, and an even bigger surprise when I found out he told his scouts to get me signed up for Love Street.
"The problem was I'd agreed the week before to begin my senior career at Hamilton.
"The players Ole will bring with him to face Clyde will be the United stars of tomorrow and they wouldn't be playing against us if Sir Alex didn't think it was good for their development."
"He is the top boss of all time and we have to be grateful to him for sending a team to attract a crowd.
"Walter Smith did the same for us with Rangers 18 months ago and the club pocketed £60,000 from the gate.
Hopeful
"Unfortunately, that money had to go straight to the bank to reduce debt and keep the wolf from the door.
"This time I'm hopeful I can raise the cash to get a couple of experienced players on loan in January to help keep my youngsters in the division because relegation would be a disaster."
