It's a system we use to promote newbies. Once you are in the main forums they are essentially irrelevant.
But I wasn´t a newbie when i got them.
You shouldn't have, but it happens now and again.
It also includes bribery and taking photo's of your genitals.
I got rep after promotion too.

Am I right in thinking that when you get promoted you go up to 154 points, hence 5 points off means a ban as you go below 150?

No, you are wrong. Completely and totally wrong. You may be confusing reputation points and infraction points, they are apples and oranges, really.
I'm disappointed that none of my posts since 07 have warranted a positive rep point.
