REPORT FROM TODAY'S GAME

I couldn’t believe the formation when I got to today’s game. First game of the season, against a newly promoted club who are one of the favourites for relegation, and we start with one striker. Absolutely unbelievable. Have the lessons from last season not been learnt? I thought we were crap for the first 30 minutes, no pace or invention, in fact it looked like a pre-season friendly. We finally created some chances – Keane (who appeared to be playing as RVN’s partner) should have scored with a couple of headers. Then Neville, Beckham & Veron combined to release Butt on a one to one with their keeper. He took it round him but amazingly could only put the ball into the side netting. Then Giggs spurned another great chance, though the ball did get deflected for a corner. Early in the second half I thought we should have had a penalty when Giggs was pushed as he went for a cross. Their keeper made some good saves but we were still struggling. Veron, who had a decent game, was replaced by Solksjaer (Veron even had his name chanted as he left the field). WBA were then reduced to 10 men when one of their players was booked twice within a few minutes, firstly for time wasting and then for a 2-footed challenge on Keane. Ferguson then went for broke, taking off Silvestre (who had played like he had two right feet) and Neville, replacing them with Scholes & Forlan. By this time it was all Utd and we finally scored when Scholes slipped the ball to Solksjaer who coolly tucked the ball into the net. We then had chances to win it and ended the game with Giggs playing left back (and giving away a couple of free kicks in injury time which could have been costly), and Butt playing right back.
Best players for us were O’Shay, Veron and Keane when he went into midfield.

I am sick of arguing the toss about Veron. My problem is the system Fergie is playing. Please please please stick to 4-4-2 – we look much threatening with this system. One final piece which I am sure has been talked about on here before, is WE NEED ANOTHER STRIKER. I cannot believe we are going into the season with just 2 recognised strikers (and one of them is probably better coming on as a sub). My mate said to me during the game “We don’t look like a happy team” – dead right. I don’t know if this is because of Keane’s book but it needs sorting out.

interesting first post. First off, their captain was booked first but the red card was automatic, so WBA can appeal against it. I must admit Veron looked good at times (he picked a perfect pass for Giggs early on but Ryan missed the ball) but at the same time we looked a bit better when he went off and we went for broke. We need another Striker, definately. When it was still 0-0, SAF put Forlan on. I was a bit pissed off at that. We should be putting Forlan in when we are two or three goals up so he can get his first goal at a relaxing time, not when we are desperately in need of a winner. But he was decent when he came on. Im happy with that performance.

I don't know. Ruud is pretty useful when he starts.

Another moron.

It isn't rocket science you know. Take away the goals OGS scored last season FROM STARTS, and see where we would have finished up. We wouldn't be worrying about qualifying for the CL that's for sure.

Surely if you're in Manchester you could have attended a few games last season? Maybe you don't know that Ole actually had his best season ever as RVN's partner? And that his all round play won him more Opta points than most of the players in the team.

Ffs, criticism is one thing, but do try to back it up with facts.

Me no understand.!!

What I saw was WBA captain being given a yellow for time wasting, he then two footed a tackle to Butt which he was sent off for having recieved a yellow already, so obviously a second yellow is automatic red.

No. McInnes was booked first and a minute later when he made the tackle he was shown a Red card straight off. That means it wasnt a second yellow. If it was WBA couldnt have appealed, but because the Ref showed him Red without giving him a yellow means they can, as he was sent off for the foul, not second booking. Understand ? ;)

Ole would be the first name I put on the team sheet every week. He looks really sharp whereas Ruud is nothing like the player he was last season. He is a yard slower!
Pity SAF has had no takers yet for Veron- but who has £25 million to spend at the moment?
Kevin Keegan maybe?

Short rewiev, We won, but there are missing something, don't forget ZTE will play same as WBA. (formation 11 in the box)and we must score two at least.

at first i didnt think it was a straight red!i will have to wait and see on the premiership!

been saying it since this time last year

Dead wrong!!

Yep - he's right. We are looking sad.

Great first post, agree with most you said except Veron was our best player. He was decent today but still a far way from what his price tag suggested.

This is indeed confusing.
But anyway, I thought Veron played okay, definitely not the best player though.

Exactly how I felt...

I think 4-5-1 is useful for European away matches against teams like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, but against West Brom at home??? And as soon as I heard that Nicky and Seba were both starting, I knew it was Ole who was going to end up losing out again.

Yes, Ole is a "super sub". Nobody consistently turns matches the way he does when he comes off the bench. And I just knew what would happen yesterday... West Brom would put all their defenders behind the ball, Ruud would struggle by himself. We'd watch pretty horrible football for most of the match. Then Ole would come off the bench with the job of saving us (which thank God he did...)

I just don't believe in this 4-5-1 system at home except maybe in very special circumstances. I honestly think Fergie did it to accommodate his midfielders...didn't want to drop Nicky or Seba. And who's the easy option to drop? Ole, of course.

But although Ole is unbelievable when he comes off the bench, that shouldn't blind us to the fact that he's pretty damned good when he starts as well. He scores a lot of winning goals for us as a starter...although not as dramatically as when he comes off the bench so maybe we don't remember them so much.

Purely based on merit, Ole has earned the right to be a starter week-in, week-out.

Do agree with you about the need for another striker though. So many teams come here now and just stack everyone behind the ball...and we don't seem to do too well in breaking these defences down. Still wish we'd consider Di Canio. He can always produce that moment of magic...and he can play on the left-wing as well. Wouldn't hurt Giggsy to have someone challenging him for his position....

must admit i'm starting to warm to the di canio idea as well after seeing this much. we just dont seem to have any creativity in that ' hole ' behind the strikers. SAF has only said about di canio that 'he wont be the next' but that doesnt rule him out.
